IMO President visits Iraq, praises maritime progress
Shafaq News/ On Sunday, International Maritime Organization (IMO) President Arsenio Dominguez expressed support for Iraq's maritime advancements and invited Iraqi Transport Minister Razzaq Muhaibis to visit the IMO headquarters in London.
During his visit, Dominguez toured Umm Qasr's northern and southern ports alongside Muhaibis, Iraq's Ambassador to the UK Jaafar Al-Sadr, Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani, and other senior officials.
Speaking at a press conference, Dominguez stated, 'I am impressed by Iraq's progress and the sustained development in its maritime sector. I want to emphasize the importance of our collaboration and look forward to returning to see further advancements.'
Muhaibis highlighted that the visit followed Iraq's official request, stressing the IMO's role in overseeing global maritime operations and fostering long-term cooperation. He noted that Iraq has ratified over 30 maritime agreements and protocols, including the latest on mandatory inspections, ensuring 'full compliance' with international requirements for IMO White List inclusion, aligning Iraq with other recognized maritime nations.
Notably, Iraq has made significant strides in revitalizing its maritime industry, beginning with investments in Umm Qasr Port expansion and the Al-Faw Grand Port projects, while new security measures and electronic tracking systems have enhanced port operations.

Iraq's total credit drops to 71B dinars in March
Shafaq News/ The Central Bank of Iraq revealed on Tuesday that total credit reached over 71 billion Iraqi dinars (IQD) by the end of March 2025. According to official data, total credit stood at 71.288 billion IQD (about $54.4M) at the end of March, marking a 2.78% decline from February, when the figure was 73.188 billion IQD (about $55.8M). The report showed that credit was distributed as follows: 24.738 billion IQD (about $18.8M) extended to the central government, 2.489 billion IQD to public institutions, and 44.061 billion IQD to the private sector. Credit refers to a contractual arrangement in which a borrower receives money or something of value and agrees to repay the lender at a later date, typically with interest.

US envoy warns of assassination threat to Syria's Al-Sharaa
Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, US envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack voiced concern over the safety of Syria's transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, warning that his efforts to promote inclusive governance and build relations with the West could make him a target for assassination by what he described as 'disgruntled militants.' In remarks to Al-Monitor, Barrack called for the establishment of a coordinated protection system around al-Sharaa, underscoring that US and Syrian interests are increasingly aligned.
