BCCI to host Asia Cup in September in UAE

The Hindu3 days ago
The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has in principle agreed to go ahead with the Asia Cup, the continental men's T20 tournament, as per the existing plan. The eventful ACC annual general meeting (AGM), held in Dhaka, confirmed the event will be hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in the United Arab Emirates in September.
'That (the schedule) will also be announced soon. We are in consultation with the BCCI, and hopefully we will resolve it very soon,' Mohsin Naqvi, the ACC chair, told mediapersons in Dhaka after the AGM was adjourned.
'The BCCI is in discussion with a few event partners, and they have told us they will announce the schedule soon.'
The Hindu understands that the AGM was briefed about the September 5 to 21 window for the event. Eight teams, including India and Pakistan, are set to participate.
Asked specifically about the India-Pakistan clash, Naqvi — who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board besides being a high-profile minister — said: 'Let's wait for the (schedule) announcement first.'
The BCCI joined the meeting online, with vice-president Rajeev Shukla being its official representative. While Shukla could not be reached for comment, a BCCI source said the Board is 'positively looking forward to hosting the Asia Cup at a neutral venue'.
Meanwhile, the AGM was adjourned, with the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket thwarting the vice-president's election. The AGM may be reconvened during the Asia Cup after the stalemate between India and Pakistan over the choice of the vice-presidential candidate is amicably resolved.

What prompted BCCI to agree to India vs Pakistan clash in Asia Cup 2025 despite recent border tensions? Details

The announcement of the India vs Pakistan clash in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 has created a lot of buzz even two months before the high-octane clash in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Saturday revealed the dates of Asia Cup 2025 with the IND vs PAK encounter scheduled for September 14. If all goes well, the arch-rivals could face each other thrice in the tournament. The dates of the Asia Cup 2025 were finalised after an ACC meeting on July 24 in Dhaka, chaired by president Mohsin Naqvi. BCCI was represented by vice-president Rajeev Shukla through a video call after the Indian board refused to travel to Bangladesh due to the political situations in the neighbouring country. Ever since the Asia Cup 2025 dates were announced on Saturday, former cricketers have raised their voices over the IND vs PAK clash. The two countries had come close to the brink of war following the Pahalgam attack, to which India responded with Operation Sindoor. But the biggest question is what prompted the BCCI to go ahead with the Asia Cup 2025 despite the recent tensions? Well, the answer to this is India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics in the country. Although India doesn't play any bilateral series with Pakistan in any sport in more than a decade, the India's no objection in multilateral competitions against their arch-rivals is deemed as a necessity if they were to get the hosting rights of the Olympic Games in 11 years time. Recently, the Government of India has allowed the Pakistan hockey teams to compete in the Asia Cup and Junior World Cup to be held in the country later in the year. Meanwhile, India could possibly face Pakistan thrice in the tournament. After the league stage, the top two teams from the groups will qualify for Super Fours. The top two teams in Super Fours will play in the final. After the Group A India vs Pakistan clash on September 14, the arch-rivals are expected to face again in Super Four. If all goes well, an India vs Pakistan final is on cards. The previous edition of the event was in a 50-over format, but this year's tournament was scheduled as a shorter-format event in preparation for next year's T20 World Cup in India. The final of the Asia Cup 2025 will be held on September 28. However, the venues are yet to be decided.

India vs Pakistan: Sourav Ganguly is 'okay' with the clash in Asia cup 2025, says...

Sourav Ganguly. (PIC - X) Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said he has no issues with India being placed in the same group as Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup, asserting that while terrorism must end, sport must continue. As per the schedule, arch-rivals India and Pakistan are clubbed in Group A and are set to face off at the Dubai International Stadium on September 14. 'I'm okay with the schedule. Sport must continue. What happened in Pahalgam should never happen, but we can't let that stop the game. Terrorism must end. India has taken a firm stand against it, it's in the past now. Sport must go on,' Ganguly told PTI. The T20 tournament will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28. India will begin their campaign against UAE on September 10 and are expected to play all their matches in Dubai. India and Pakistan could also meet again in the Super Four stage on September 21. Group A comprises India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will allow 17-member squads for the 19-match tournament, with matches scheduled in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. While the BCCI is the official host, the tournament is being held in the UAE as India and Pakistan have agreed to play only at neutral venues till 2027 due to ongoing cross-border tensions. The two countries had come close to the brink of war following the Pahalgam attack, to which India responded with Operation Sindoor.

RSS Chief Bhagwat Invokes Yogi Arvinds Vision For Hindu Rashtra; Says, First Understand...

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday asserted that the rise of Sanatan Dharma and the emergence of a Hindu nation are inevitable, echoing the words of Yogi Arvind. Speaking at the 'Gyan Sabha', a national education conference organised by the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, Bhagwat said, "Yogi Arvind said that it is God's will for the Sanatan Dharma to rise and for the rise of Sanatan Dharma, the rise of the Hindu nation is inevitable. These are his words, and we see that today's world needs this vision. Therefore, we will have to first understand what Bharat is" Bhagwat said that India's identity must be preserved, asserting that if you lose your identity, no matter how good you are, the world will neither respect nor protect you. "Bharat is a proper noun. It should not be translated. 'India that is Bharat' is true. But Bharat is Bharat, and that is why, while writing and speaking, we should keep Bharat as Bharat... Bharat must remain Bharat. The identity of Bharat is respected because it is Bharat. If you lose your identity, whatever other meritorious qualities you may have, you will never be respected or secure in this world. That is the thumb rule,' Bhagwat said. Bhagwat also called for India to move beyond the symbolism of being the 'golden bird' and instead become a 'lion', asserting that the world recognises and respects power. 'The world understands power. Therefore, Bharat must become strong. It must also grow rich in economic terms,' Bhagwat said, stressing that strength and prosperity are essential for India to find its rightful place in the global order. Touching on the theme of national identity, Bhagwat made a strong case for preserving the name 'Bharat' without translation. 'Bharat is a proper noun. It should not be translated. 'India is Bharat' — that's true. But Bharat is Bharat. In every context — whether personal or public, while speaking or writing — we should say Bharat,' he emphasised. The RSS chief also spoke at length about the purpose and values of education, stating that true education empowers an individual to live independently while inculcating a spirit of sacrifice and selflessness. 'Education that teaches selfishness is not real education,' he declared. He further said that education is not confined to schools alone but extends to the home and society. 'The environment in which children grow up plays a crucial role. Society must reflect on what kind of atmosphere is needed to raise a confident and responsible generation,' Bhagwat said. The conference was attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, along with several senior academicians and vice-chancellors from across India. President of Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, Dr Pankaj Mittal, Secretary Dr Atul Kothari, Coordinator A Vinod, Chairman of Cochin Shipyard Madhu Nair were also present. The event focused on reshaping the country's educational framework in alignment with Indian cultural values and preparing the youth to face future challenges with clarity and confidence.
