Al Tadawi 1 win Volleyball Championship as 12th NAS Sports Tournament concludes

Gulf Today22-03-2025
Hot favourites Al Tadawi 1 delivered a resounding final performance to swamp Al Hilal 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) to be crowned volleyball champions on the concluding night of the 12th Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament at a jam-packed indoor stadium at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex on Thursday.
Egged on by a huge, vociferous crowd supporting both teams in tandem, Al Tadawi 1 — made up of players from top Russian outfit, Dynamo Moscow — left nothing to chance as they played a totally controlled game to outdo Al Hilal in three straight sets.
Al Hilal did seem to get the bearings in during the opening set as they matched Al Tawadi 1 point for point. But the closest they came was when they were tied at 23-23, only to see the unstoppable boys from Russia take it away 25-23.
Al Hilal tried to fight back in the next set, only to see outside hitter Anton Semyshev come up with a match-defining performance of two serves, three blocks and the honour of being the top scorer on the night with 17 points as Al Tadawi 1 powered away to win the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-21.
This was a worthy finale to the 12th edition of the Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament, the largest sporting event of its kind.
Launched and sponsored by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, the tournament is held annually during the holy month of Ramadan at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex, under the directives of Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, under the slogan 'Unlimited Abilities'.
The winners were honoured by Khalfan Belhoul, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, in the presence of Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai; Abdullah Bin Damithan, CEO and General Manager of DP World in the GCC; Nasser Aman Al Rahma, Assistant Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council and Hassan Al Mazrouei, Tournament Director.
The Al Tadawi 1 team received the gold medals and the tournament trophy, along with a cash prize of Dhs600,000. Al Hilal, mostly represented by players from Italy's Grottazzolina team, received their silver medals and a cash award of Dhs500,000.
Al Ameed had to stay content with the bronze medal after having defeated Al Samawi 3-1, the previous night.
There were a handful of individual awards bestowed on the final night with Al Hilal's Andrea Marquespo winning the Best Receiver award, while Al Tadawi 1's Maxim Sabshkov won the 'Best Server' prize and Al Tadawi 1's Dmitry Zhuk taking the award for the 'Best Blocker'. Outstanding for his scoring throughout the competition, Anton Gavarina from Al Samawi walked away with the award for the 'Best Hitter', while Al Hilal's Dusan Petkovic was adjudged the 'Best Scorer'.
Khalfan Belhoul, on behalf of the organizing committee, paid tribute to Lt. Gen. Mohammed Al Marri for his unwavering support. He also honored key sponsors like DP World and Dubai Sports Channel, along with referees, officials, and administrative staff who contributed to the event's success.
Padel competition concludes: Pablo Arriber and Cesar Freire won the UAE Padel Federation Local 20 Championship after defeating the pairing of Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Padel Federation and Javi Santonja in the final match.
The winners were honoured by Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports; Khalfan Belhoul, and Hassan Al Mazrouei.
The ceremony was also attended by Dubai Sports Ambassadors Bacary Sagna, former French national team player, Arsenal and Manchester City Football Club, and winner of the English Premier League and FA Cup titles; Fadi El Khatib; and Eric Abidal, former French national team and Barcelona star and current CEO of Al Wasl Club.
The 12th annual tournament featured over 8,000 athletes competing in 11 Olympic and community sports, including two newly introduced events. This year's lineup included running, cycling, volleyball, padel, tug-of-war, fencing, jiu-jitsu, wheelchair basketball, and obstacle course. The prize fund was raised to a record Dhs4.5 million, covering team awards and public prizes.

Rybakina upsets Sabalenka to reach Cincinnati Open semis, Alcaraz through

Elena Rybakina powered into her first Cincinnati Open semi-final after stunning defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-1 6-4 on Friday, while five-times Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz recovered from a second-set blip to beat Andrey Rublev. The Kazakh ninth seed delivered a fine performance to secure her seventh career win over a top-ranked player, setting up a blockbuster last-four clash with six-times major winner Iga Swiatek in a showdown of Wimbledon champions. Rybakina fired 11 aces throughout the match, earning an impressive 81 per cent of points on her first serve, while saving all five break points she faced as she secured her fifth win over Belarusian Sabalenka in 12 meetings. "I'm happy with the serve. It was the key," former world number three Rybakina said. "We're both big hitters. Today I served really well. If Aryna serves well, it's completely different. Hopefully I continue like this." Earlier, Swiatek advanced to her first WTA 1000 semi-final in 15 months after beating Russian 28th seed Anna Kalinskaya 6-3 6-4. Kalinskaya, who had defeated Swiatek in their only previous meeting, put up a spirited fight by saving four match points, before the Polish third seed converted her fifth opportunity on serve to seal the victory. "I just played my game," Swiatek said. "For sure, it wasn't easy. Just happy I was solid and had the intensity to apply pressure." Russian Veronika Kudermetova carved out a comfortable 6-1 6-2 victory over Varvara Gracheva to reach the semis of Cincinnati for the first time. Kudermetova appears to be back to the form that once carried her into the top-10 as she earned her first WTA 1000 last-four spot since 2023. She will next face Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, who rallied from a set down to shock twice Grand Slam winner Coco Gauff 2-6 6-4 6-3. "I tried to fight every point and it worked. I'm really happy. Thank you for cheering for me ... because we are in the States ... Coco is from here," Paolini, the French Open and Wimbledon runner-up last year, said. ALCARAZ SURVIVES RUBLEV SCARE In the men's draw, Spanish second seed Alcaraz battled to a 6-3 4-6 7-5 victory over Russian ninth seed Rublev to reach the semi-finals. The 22-year-old Alcaraz was far from his best, committing 15 unforced errors and three double faults in the decider, but capitalising on his lone match point, courtesy of a Rublev double fault, to secure his 15th consecutive Masters 1000 win. "Playing someone like Andrey, when you lose focus on two or three points, it can cost you the set or the match. I just stayed strong mentally and that's what I'm most proud of," Alcaraz said. "It's just accepting the moment, accepting that I am playing a third set, that it's going to be a really tough battle, and I love that." Alcaraz, winner of 37 of his last 39 matches, advanced to his 12th Masters 1000 semi-final, equalling the mark of world number one Jannik Sinner, who faces French qualifier Terence Atmane in the other semi-final. Next up for Alcaraz is third seed Alexander Zverev, who knocked out Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton with a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 win. "I came out today and probably felt the best I've felt in a few months. Was feeling the ball incredibly well from both sides," Zverev, who won the Cincinnati title in 2021, said. But the German struggled physically and called for the doctor in the second set. "In the first set I started feeling not so great and it got progressively worse. But I'm in the semi-finals and I'll do everything I can to be 100% tomorrow."

Spartan, Tough Mudder return to Hatta for Dubai Fitness Challenge

Spartan Middle East has confirmed that global obstacle course racing brands Spartan Race and Tough Mudder will stage back-to-back events at Wadi Hub at Hatta Resorts by Dubai Holding on November 1 and 2, 2025. Licensed by ITP Media Group and organised in cooperation with the Dubai Sports Council, the weekend forms part of the official Dubai Fitness Challenge 30×30 calendar, a city-wide movement encouraging residents to commit to 30 minutes of daily activity for 30 days. The events join a growing list of sporting and cultural activities being hosted in Hatta throughout the year. Launched in 2017 by the Dubai government, the Dubai Fitness Challenge has become a cornerstone of the city's health and wellbeing agenda. The addition of Spartan and Tough Mudder in 2025 brings a high-intensity element aimed at both experienced athletes and first-time participants. The Spartan schedule on Saturday will feature four formats: the Sprint 5K, Super 10K, Trail 10K, and Trail 21K, the latter a non-obstacle race. Kids by Spartan races will run across 1K, 1.5K and 3K distances. The courses will be set against Hatta's mountain backdrop and include Spartan's signature endurance and agility challenges. On Sunday, Tough Mudder will return to the Middle East with its team-focused 5K and 15K routes, including the brand's classic mud obstacles. A Kids by Spartan event will also take place. Both days will feature a Festival Village at Wadi Hub with food stalls, entertainment, brand activations, and family-friendly activities. 'This event represents a key moment for the OCR community in the Middle East,' said Isla Watt, Director of Spartan Middle East. 'Bringing Spartan and Tough Mudder together under the Dubai Fitness Challenge umbrella reinforces our mission to make fitness fun, challenging and accessible to everyone.' With obstacle course racing continuing to grow internationally, the November weekend marks another milestone in the sport's regional expansion.
