Jury picked for trial of man charged with shooting, killing Chicago police Officer Andrés Mauricio Vásquez Lasso
Officer Vásquez Lasso was shot and killed on the job back in March 2023. The now-21-year-old defendant, Steven Montano, was 18 at the time of the shooting.
On March 1, 2023, Vásquez Lasso officer was responding to a call about a domestic incident near Montano's home in the Southwest Side's Gage Park neighborhood. Prosecutors from the Cook County State's Attorney's office said Montano's 37-year-old girlfriend called 911 after he threatened her with a gun.
Montano jumped out of a window, into the gangway, and ran back toward the alley to get away from responding officers, according to prosecutors.
An officer saw an object in Montano's hands, believing it was a gun.
Montano kept running through neighboring yards and eventually past Sidney Sawyer Elementary School, at 5247 S. Spaulding Ave. That was where Officer Vásquez Lasso got out of his squad car and chased Montano through a gate — entering the schoolyard area, prosecutors said.
Officer Vásquez Lasso ordered Montano to stop multiple times, prosecutors said. Eventually, Montano turned toward Vásquez Lasso while racking the slide on his pistol and pointed the gun at him, according to prosecutors.
Both fired their guns, prosecutors said. Vásquez Lasso was shot in the head, arm, and leg and killed.
Montano was shot in the mouth and fully recovered. He faces a first-degree murder charge, as well as charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and opening fire near a school building.
The woman involved maintains she did not call 911 and says she was not threatened.
During voir dire for jury selection on Monday, potential jurors were questioned about the type of TV they watch, their relationship and family dynamics, and whether they have family members in law enforcement.
The judge told jurors to expect for this case to take about a week. They will be Tuesday morning for opening statements.

Colorado prosecutors are set to lay out their evidence Tuesday against a man charged with murder, attempted murder and other crimes in a firebomb attack on demonstrators showing their support for Israeli hostages in Gaza. Investigators say Mohamed Sabry Soliman told them he intended to kill the roughly 20 participants at the weekly demonstration on Boulder's Pearl Street pedestrian mall on June 1. But he threw just two of more than two dozen Molotov cocktails he had with him while yelling, 'Free Palestine!' Police said he told them he got scared because he had never hurt anyone before. Federal authorities say Soliman, an Egyptian national, had been living in the U.S. illegally with his family. The purpose of Tuesday's preliminary hearing in state court in Boulder is for District Judge Nancy Woodruff Salomone to determine if there's enough evidence for Soliman to go on trial there. Soliman already faced dozens of charges in state court as well as hate crime charges in federal court when state prosecutors added murder charges following the death of an 82-year-old woman who was injured in the attack died as the result of her injuries. Karen Diamond helped at her synagogue and volunteered for several local groups, including the University of Colorado University Women's Club and a local music festival. Last week, Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Cramer-Babycz told U.S. District Judge John L. Kane that federal prosecutors have not decided yet whether to file additional charges against Soliman related to Diamond's death. Federal prosecutors allege the victims were targeted because of their perceived or actual connection to Israel. But Soliman's federal defense lawyers say he should not have been charged with hate crimes because the evidence shows he was motivated by opposition to Zionism, the political movement to establish and sustain a Jewish state in Israel. An attack motivated by someone's political views is not considered a hate crime under federal law. Soliman has pleaded not guilty to the hate crime charges. He has not been asked to enter a plea to the state charges yet. State prosecutors have identified 29 people who are considered victims of the attack, including 13 who were physically injured. The others were nearby and are considered victims because they could have been hurt. A dog was also injured in the attack, so Soliman has also been charged with animal cruelty. Tuesday's hearing was set to move ahead over the objections of Soliman's state public defenders, who asked to delay it after Diamond died and Soliman was charged with murder. In a court filing last week, they said they were not aware of an autopsy report being done for Diamond yet and asked to delay the hearing until October so they would be be able to review 'significant medical records' in advance.

Two men arrested for murder of 80-year-old woman and 3 others in Cape Town
The Anti-Gang Unit has arrested two people in connection with a shooting at a Bishop Lavis house last week in which four people, including an 80-year-old woman, were killed. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said an initial investigation revealed that two armed men stormed into the house in Reenberg Road at about 19:15, firing numerous gunshots at the occupants. 'The victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel,' Swartbooi added. The investigation resulted in the arrest of two 23-year-old men. 'The possibility that the incident is gang-related cannot be ruled out, and the circumstances surrounding the murder are now the subject of an investigation by the South African Police Service,' Swartbooi said. Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, commended the efforts of the investigating team. In a previous News24 report on the shooting, it emerged that all the victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds, primarily to the head, chest, and upper body. Three of the bodies were found on a double bed, and the fourth on the floor. At the time, Bishop Lavis Crime Prevention Forum chairperson Graham Lindhorst said the victims were killed just hours after an attempted murder not far from where the victims were killed. Chairperson of Parliament's police portfolio committee, Ian Cameron, also described the loss of the four lives as 'tragic'.
