Why Audi RS Q8 is one of best performance SUVs money can buy

The Herald03-05-2025

The funky Audi SUV is primed for above-average sporty driving treats.
It has two sport modes: RS1 and RS2 where the dampers stiffen, the exhaust butterflies open and the eight-speed transmission has sharpened responses.
The RS2 mode unshackles the traction control system when selected.
Every sports driving component is in sync, and the quattro AWD system and other functions like torque vectoring manage the physics for impressive clawing in corners while the communicative steering makes it easy to point and place the wide car anywhere on the road.
It is no wonder the RS Q8 is the fastest SUV on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
In 2024, the SUV blitzed the 20.832km track in just 7 minutes 36.698 seconds , some six seconds faster than the previous generation model.
The RS Q8 has an off-road setting that raises the suspension rising to clear obstacles, but let's be real; the low-profile rubber contradicts such ambitions.
Relatively, it is a bargain buy compared to rivals, respectively costing R76K and R552k less than the BMW X6M and Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe 63 SE.
The Audi RS Q8 is also a whopping R1.2m saving on the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, formerly the fastest SUV at the Nurburgring.
After spending a week with the SUV my verdict is that it is one of the best-built, best looking, sweetest handling, satisfyingly comfy, fast and charismatic luxo-speed barges money can buy.

South Africa not on newly announced 2026 F1 calendar

Madrid's Madring, a part-street layout around the city's Ifema exhibition centre, will be the last race in Europe on September 13 and the weekend after the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, due to drop off the calendar after 2026, will be held on August 23 as a sprint weekend. The season will end in Abu Dhabi on December 6, immediately after Qatar. 'We are excited to welcome Madrid to the calendar and to see huge automotive brands such as Audi, Cadillac and Ford join the Formula One grid,' said Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali. Swiss-based Sauber will become the Audi works team in 2026 while Ford are partnering with Red Bull. Formula One will also have 100% sustainable fuel. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia will again be held on successive weekends in April due to Ramadan taking place in February and March. The calendar has been organised to create more of a geographical flow, which Formula One said would deliver significant freight efficiencies and help the sport's sustainability push. There will be six back-to-back race weekends, with two triple-headers of three in a row starting with Austin, Mexico and Brazil and ending with Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The FIA did not detail the sprint events, other than Zandvoort which has been confirmed.

Reveal date confirmed: Audi starts teasing all-new Q3

Third generation Q3 will retain the choice of petrol and diesel engines, but gain the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid assistance for the first time. Audi has released the first teaser image of the all-new Q3 ahead of its 16 June world debut. Image: Audi Mentioned back in March as being in-line for unveiling in 2025, Audi has officially started teasing the all-new Q3 ahead of its confirmed world debut on 16 June. New styling and position Shown in a single depiction of the headlight, the Q3 incorporates the same styling aspects as the new A5 and A6, hinted not only by the LED cluster, but also the outline of the bumper and surround of the Singleframe grille. ALSO READ: All-new generation Audi Q3 showing itself this year Set to replace the current second generation that has been available since 2018, the new Q3 will become the Four Rings' de facto entry-level model soon as production of the Q2 is expected to conclude before the end of the year. Petrol and diesel remain but… Tipped to ride on the updated MQB Evo platform rather than the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) that underpins the A5 and A6, the Q3 will retain the options of petrol and turbodiesel engine, but feature electrification for the first time in the shape of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powerplants. Not set to continue though is the RS Q3 due to emissions regulations, or the six-speed manual gearbox the current Q3 still offers in select markets on mainly entry-level variants. Current second generation Q3 has been around since 2018. Image: Audi 'With a total of more than two million vehicles sold worldwide since the launch of the first generation, the Audi Q3 is one of our best-selling models and has a high status in our product portfolio,' Ingolstadt's CEO, Gernot Döllner, said in a statement. 'With the third generation of the Audi Q3, we are renewing an important model family as part of our product initiative'. New inside Besides its exterior similarities with the A5 and A6, the Q3 could incorporate the same interior design by way of the curved dashboard and no less than three displays; the 11.9-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster, the new 14.5-inch MMI infotainment system and, as an option, the 10.9-inch MMI on the passenger's side. With less than a week left before its debut, don't be surprised if more teaser hints are released within the next few days. NOW READ: Urban suited Audi Q3 TDI shows why simplicity is often the best
