Princess Anne's unusual birthday 'rule' revealed as she sends five-year warning to Royal Family

Daily Mail4 days ago
Tomorrow is Princess Anne 's 75th birthday. But due to an unusual 'rule' the Princess Royal adheres, to the Windsors might not need to bring out the cake and balloons to mark the occasion.
Indeed, the notoriously private Anne is known for her rather unconventional approach to royal life, having decided when her children were born they would not receive titles.
That attitude also extends into other aspects of Anne's life.
On the Royals with Roya and Kate podcast, expert Roya Nikkhah revealed Anne follows a strict policy when it comes to birthday celebrations.
Roya claims that the Princess Royal has a 'no-frills' approach to her birthdays which means she only celebrates major milestones.
'Anne's policy is: "I will do things for my birthdays that have a zero, but I won't do things for my birthdays that have a five,"' Roya said.
She added Anne has reportedly cancelled meetings in the run to the big day to avoid discussions about how she might mark her 75th.
Anne cancelled her last major birthday celebration in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Anne and her father Prince Philip at the 2012 Olympics. Anne, like Philip, is reportedly planning to wind down her royal duties as she approaches her 80th and then 90th birthday
Five years ago, the Daily Mail reported Anne had been due to celebrate her 70th with a soiree hosted by her mother Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace.
The Princess Royal instead marked the occasion with a sailing trip around the west coast of Scotland with her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.
The late Queen also hosted a secret, socially distanced lunch with her daughter at Frogmore House, an empty private royal residence on her Berkshire estate, to mark the occasion.
No other members of the Royal Family were present, and only minimal staff - who were part of the Queen's castle 'bubble' at the time - attended.
Anne's next milestone birthday will be her 80th in 2030 and, according to Roya, Anne plans to start 'winding down' her royal duties after that.
The royal insider said: 'I was told that she's told her team: "I'm going to start winding down a little bit at 80, in five years' time, and then I want to step back completely at 90."'
She speculated that Anne might be following the same timescale as her late father, Prince Philip.
Roya said: 'I thought the timeline, as you said, was interesting – that she's looking at her father, the late Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, who stepped back from public life completely at 96.'

Indeed, Anne shows no sign of slowing down just yet and she holds the title of the hardest working royal, having taken on 474 engagements last year and a whopping 20,000 throughout her adult life.
On top of this, Anne is the patron of over 300 charities, organisations and military regiments.
This includes The Princess Royal's Trust for Carers - now known as the Carers Trust - and Save The Children which was the first major charity with which she became closely associated when Anne was just 20 years old.
During her long tenure as a working royal, Anne has become something of a trailblazer.
At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, she became the first member of the family to take part in the tournament when she competed in the equestrian event.
Anne also made the unconventional decision on behalf of her son and daughter that they would forgo much of the trappings of royal life and not receive titles.
Anne's controversial decision happened immediately after the birth of her son Peter, in 1977, when she decided her son would not be given a title.
Writing in his biography of Princess Anne, royal insider Brian Hoey said Anne did so because she believed 'in this day and age, a title would be more of a hindrance than an advantage as her children try to make their way in the world'.
Although Queen Elizabeth II reluctantly agreed to Anne's request, Hoey wrote that the late Queen had been 'anxious' to give her first-born grandson a title.
And - according to royal biographer Ingrid Seward - Elizabeth was left disappointed by her decision, but was nevertheless persuaded to respect her daughter's decision.
Despite not being bestowed the title of prince, Peter still grew up with many of the airs and graces that define the royals.
After his birth, Anne was quick to resume her own duties as a working member of the royals which meant that Peter was brought up by a nanny.
Peter and later his sister also went to Gordonstoun, the same public school his grandfather Philip and his three uncles all attended.
Hoey perfectly summarised Peter's upbringing as 'not exactly a run-of-the-mill commoner'.
When Anne's daughter was born in 1981, she decided not to give her a royal title and broke convention in a different way when she named her Zara, an unusual for a member of the Royal Family.
And the Princess Royal was very much involved with bringing up her daughter with a young Zara 'never very far from Anne's side'.
Whether Anne succeeded in giving Zara and Peter a 'normal' life is up for debate, but they certainly got the best of both worlds in many respects.
As while their cousins continue their roles as working members of the family, Anne's children have had successful careers elsewhere.
From 2000, Peter worked in Formula One first for Jaguar as a corporate hospitality manager and then for Williams racing team as a sponsorship accounts manager.
He left F1 in 2006 for a job at the Royal Bank of Scotland and since leaving the bank in 2012 he has held numerous other jobs in the private sector.
Zara had a successful equestrian career which saw her compete in multiple horse riding competitions.
Her career high point was representing Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics where she won a silver medal in the equestrian team eventing.

This Morning viewers jeer 'this is car crash TV!' as Real Housewives Of London intros go seriously wrong in 'embarrassing and cringe' live interview

This Morning viewers called the Real Housewives Of London intros on Monday's show 'car crash TV' as they went seriously wrong live on air. Juliet Angus, Amanda Caroline Cronin, Karen Loderick-Peace, Juliet Mayhew, Panthea Parker and Nessie Welschinger appeared on the most recent episode of the ITV programme to chat to hosts Craig Doyle, 54, and Sian Welby, 38, about the brand new Hayu series. Real Housewives of London premiered on the popular streaming service on Monday (18 August 2025) - and viewers will be treated to an episode weekly. The presenters gave the six stars a chance to introduce themselves to those watching at home, but it didn't go to plan. Karen was first up and she didn't look down the correct camera, leading her to repeat her introduction from scratch. 'Oh! Good morning!' Karen said. 'My name is Karen Loderick-Peace and I am a fashion designer, mother of three and I'm originally from Jamaica.' Craig said: 'There you go! One for TV, one for the gram.' Panthea was up next, followed by Amanda, who also messed up her lines after realising that she was also looking at the wrong camera. She restarted her intro and she was heard to hear because the rest of her co-stars were laughing over her. The reality star restarted hers three times before saying: 'Good morning, I am Amanda Caroline. I am a mother of one. I live in Belgravia and I am CEO and founder of Amanda Caroline's skincare.' Many rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share how much they were cringing over the segment. 'Car crash tv!! #ThisMorning.' 'Good to see this has all been rehearsed in advance.' 'This intro of the Real Housewives of London women is cringe!' '#thismorning give me strength.' 'This is embarrassing #thismorning.' 'Oh Christ.' 'What is this. A hot mess #ThisMorning.' '#ThisMorning good Lord this is cringe.' Last week the cast teased 'volcanic' levels of drama and admitted 'this city is a cruel mistress' in a series of glamorous intro videos. A set of clips, which invited viewers to 'meet the wives' offered an insight into the larger-than-life characters at the heart of London's social scene. The series promises champagne-fuelled catfights and caviar aplenty in the city's wealthiest neighbourhoods. 'I think the Housewives breed takes a special kind of person,' upcoming London housewife Juliet Angus told RadioTimes. 'Every one of these girls has that quality - no-holds-barred, very honest and straightforward and fun and wild, and you don't know what you're going to get.' The ladies told the outlet that viewers should expect the 'unexpected,' likening the dramatic scenes to a 'volcano'. The Real Housewives franchise, which started in 2006, includes stars from Beverly Hills, Atlanta, New York and Cheshire.

King Charles marks the official start of his summer residency at Balmoral

King Charles has officially begun his annual summer retreat to Balmoral Castle- marking the occasion with an inspection of The Royal Regiment of Scotland. The monarch, 76, received a warm welcome as the British Army guard of honour marked his arrival at Balmoral Castle, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The royal marked the occasion with a ceremonial inspection of the Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion, at the gates of the historic estate. Looking every inch the monarch in a traditional tweed jacket, kilt and sporran, His Majesty was all smiles as he greeted the troops. The poignant royal tradition, saw the King step out to meet the soldiers who serve as the Sovereign's ceremonial guard during his stay at Balmoral. Later the King greeted well-wishers who stepped out to greet him on his arrival to the estate. In a sweet moment, Charles greeted Shetland pony Cpl Cruachan IV, who is the mascot of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. King Charles succeeded his late mother Queen Elizabeth II as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. While official details of the royal family's summer schedule remain under wraps, Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, are also expected to spend time at the estate. Queen Camilla joined the King at Balmoral yesterday, Charles looked relaxed as he was snapped driving himself and Camilla to Crathie Kirk. The King's wife, 78, appeared in equally good spirits, beaming and waving at those waiting to spot a glimpse of the royal couple as they travelled to the weekly service. Both Charles and Camilla opted for smart outfits, with the monarch sporting a camel coat, while the Queen donned a statement hat featuring a green and black feather, which appeared to match the rest of her attire. Charles and Camilla were attending the Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire organised by the Royal British Legion in what made for a moving tribute to war heroes, where they were joined by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. It included two Fly Pasts, a two-minute silence, musical interludes and testimony from survivors of the so-called Forgotten War. The Prince and Princess of Wales also shared a powerful message on social media, but were not present at Friday's events - after the King addressed the nation to tell how the sacrifice of heroes would never be forgotten. Their Majesties led the nation's commemorations as they watched the moving memorial alongside veterans, members of VJ associations, military personnel and senior politicians at the event, which was held in 25C sunshine this afternoon. They listened to the The Last Post before the silence at 12pm, and the nation heard from 101-year-old former RAF Pilot Ron Gumbley, who read the poem 'For The Fallen' by Laurence Binyon. The ceremony resumed with readings from veterans, and music from military bands and choirs - as well as a tribute from actress Celia Imrie - which all appeared to spur an emotional response from their Majesties. But it was Captain Yavar Abbas who stole the show, after he went 'briefly off-script' to salute 'my brave King' for attending despite ongoing cancer treatment. The 104-year-old said that he himself had been 'rid of it for 25 years and counting', before reading an excerpt from his war diary, which he wrote while serving in the 11th Sikh regiment of the British Indian Army. 'Before I read the excerpt, I make an apology for briefly going off the script to salute my brave King,' he said, as the camera panned to show Charles and Camilla. Captain Abbas continued: 'Who is here with his beloved Queen, in spite of the fact he's under treatment for cancer, which I share with him, and if it provides comfort, of which I have been rid for the past 25 years and counting. 'And I salute him, for gracing this occasion because by his presence here, he has gone a long way to make sure that his grandad's 14th army is never given the sobriquet again of a Forgotten Army.' Following applause, and reading from a diary entry dated February 8, 1945, he said: 'Tomorrow, I hope I will live to do better things. 'I could have been dead twice before, but I'm still living. I would be surprised if I get a life for a third time. May god spare me.' His comments were met with applause from the guests, while Camilla's eyes were red from crying. As he returned to the Royal Box, Mr Abbas saluted the King once more, who stood to chat to the veteran, clasping his hands. They spoke for almost a minute before saluting each other and returning to their seats. When they were reunited at a reception for veterans later that afternoon, they greeted each other like old friends.
