Beauty expiration dates explained: How to determine whether or not your products are still safe to use

NBC News13-03-2025
We don't always have the answers, but we have some people on speed dial who do — which is why we present to you our series FYI where we have experts explain how often you should wash your hair, whether or not you should use fluoride-free toothpaste and if lip balm is actually bad.
As a beauty reporter, my bathroom is packed with skin care products I've tried, am currently trying or need to try. Every few weeks, I do a deep clean of all my items looking for formulas to toss and always find myself asking a few questions on repeat: Is this expired and safe to use? What if I haven't even opened it yet? How much longer do I have left to use this?
If you're trying to decide whether or not you need to say goodbye to that moisturizer or serum you've been seeing in the corner of your bathroom, I spoke with cosmetic chemists and beauty founders about how to determine the shelf life of your items. We discussed whether there are hard-set rules to follow as it pertains to expiration dates, plus some tips and tricks for properly storing your favorite formulas.

Do beauty products expire?
Yes. Similar to food and medicine, skin care products have active ingredients that can go bad or lose their effectiveness over time, according to Dr. Shuting Hu, a cosmetic chemist and founder and CEO of Acaderma. Using products past the expiration date could harm or irritate your skin, leading to breakouts and more, she says.
Sunscreens and acne formulas are two key products that tend to have active ingredients with firm expiration dates that will be disclosed on the packaging, according to Ron Robinson, a cosmetic chemist and founder and CEO of BeautyStat. Other products, like lip balms and toners, will have more wiggle room.
How should you store your beauty products?
The best way to maintain your beauty products is by storing them in cool, dry locations and tightening their lids and caps after each use, according to Robinson. Too much heat can shorten a product's shelf life, so you want to keep them in a cabinet, drawer, or closed box, says Hu.
Some active ingredients, like vitamin C and retinol, might do better in the fridge because it can slow down the oxidation of these actives. But, it's always best to check the label for specific storage instructions to make sure your products last as long as possible, according to Hu.
This set of stackable drawers, which has a 4.8-star average rating from over 210 reviews on Amazon, is perfect for people who have a lot of products and need to access everything quickly. The acrylic material lets you see which drawer has which products, and its design makes retrieving them easy. It has handles to pull the drawers out, and its track allows it to come out smoothly without getting stuck, according to the brand. If you prefer shorter or wider options than this set, the brand also makes them in three additional sizes — 3.5' H, 4.4' H and 6.6' H.
Reviewers say this portable mini fridge is perfect for small spaces since it's on the more compact side. It can fit roughly six 12 oz. soda cans and is great for storing things like eye patches and individual sheet masks. It comes with a removable shelf, so you can still fit taller items inside. The fridge, which has a 4.4-star average rating from over 12,700 reviews on Amazon, also has two temperature settings (cool and warm), so you can easily alternate depending on what you store inside.
One of the best ways to preserve your products is by keeping them in containers with a lid, like this option from Yamazaki, which has a 4.6-star average rating from over 140 reviews on Amazon. Its adjustable inner divider lets you customize the organizer's internal shape to best fit your products. Reviewers say that it's easy to clean using soap and a damp cloth.
This six-liter (nine 12 oz. soda can capacity) mini fridge is large enough to hold your skin care and other necessities at a chilled temperature without taking too much room on your desk, vanity and more. Reviewers say it's relatively quiet and makes a very small yet noticeable noise, but it isn't loud to the point it disrupts conversations or interferes with TV and movie watching. It has a 4.0-star average rating from over 7,100 reviews on Amazon.
How do you know the shelf life of a product?
One of the key things to look for to determine how long you can use a beauty product is by looking at the period-after-opening symbol (PAO), which you'll see displayed as an open jar with a cap floating over it, according to Robinson.
This translates to how many months, or how long the product will stay good after you open it, says Hu. There is usually a number and a 'M' next to the image indicating the number of months you have until the product expires. For example, '6M' means 6 months and '12M' means 12 months.
What if the beauty product doesn't have a PAO symbol?
'I typically tell consumers that after they open products, the one-year clock starts,' says Robinson. 'After that time, you should toss it.' However, if it's an item that comes in close contact with the eye area (eye creams, mascaras and concealers), consider tossing it anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. If mold or bacteria gets in the eye, it can lead to a serious infection, says Robinson.
Here's what else to consider when determining if you should throw a product away:
Color change
Odor change
Textural change
The formula is beginning to separate
If the product is colored and you notice streaking
If you have an unopened beauty product, do you still have to follow the expiration date?
Unopened skin care products may last longer than opened ones, but they eventually expire even if you don't use them, says Hu. Expiration dates are there to provide a general timeline for best usage.
If you've properly stored an unopened product, you can expect it to work fine up to the expiration date. 'I would recommend that you try to stay aware or remember when you first purchased and opened a product to ensure it is safe to use,' she says. If you're unsure, it's best to remain cautious and discard any products that may be expired or are nearing their expiration date.
Do some beauty ingredients expire faster than others?
Yes — some ingredients like pure vitamin C (L-Ascrobic Acid) can oxidize and expire quickly, says Robinson. Oxidation is the process when an ingredient loses electrons, which changes its chemical structure as a result of being exposed to air. How quickly a beauty item oxidizes depends on its ingredient makeup because they can all happen at different rates, according to Robinson.
For example, vitamin C is 'very unstable and can begin oxidizing very quickly, whereas oils and butters may take a little longer,' says Robinson. 'Air-tight packaging may prolong the life of sensitive ingredients, but over time, the ingredients still oxidize. This process renders the product or ingredient ineffective and or changes the color and/or makes the odor go off.'
Beauty expiration dates
Here's a general rule of thumb our experts recommend following:
Products with the highest risk of expiring quickly are water-containing formulas (they require the most preservation given bacteria, mold, and yeast grow in water environments) — this includes creams and lotions, according to Robinson. These water-based products will expire more quickly than oil-based products, according to Hu.
Anhydrous (products that don't have water) products such as makeup powders are the least likely to be a microbial risk, according to Robinson. Also, products that are in pump bottles tend to last longer since they're less exposed to bacteria and oxygen.
'It's important to use your best judgment, and if something looks or smells off, it's time to throw it out,' says Hu.

The best women's sneakers for wide feet, according to podiatrists

If you have wide feet, you are likely no stranger to the feeling of tightness and pinching that comes from a new pair of shoes.. But having wide feet shouldn't stop you from having your Cinderella moment. You may just need to focus on sneakers that have a wide width to find the perfect running or walking shoe. 'The right shoe will feel comfortable, provide adequate space for your toes to move freely, and support your foot's natural shape and alignment,' says Dr. Isaac Tabari, a board-certified foot and ankle doctor and owner of the NYC Podiatry Center of Excellence. Thankfully, there are plenty of sneaker brands — like New Balance, Hoka and Brooks — that make shoes specifically for people with wide feet. I interviewed podiatrists and included their picks along with highly-rated options and NBC Select staff recommendations that come in wide widths. Want more from NBC Select? Sign up for our newsletter, The Selection, and shop smarter. How I picked the best sneakers for women with wide feet 'A wide width shoe offers more room throughout the entire shoe — including the toe box, midsole and heel,' says Tabari. But with so many wide width sneakers on the market, it can be tough to know what to focus on when shopping. Here are the things podiatrists suggest paying close attention to: Support: The whole point of getting shoes wide enough for your feet is to make sure they're comfortable. So along with width look for shoes with arch support and a cushioned sole, says Tabari. You can also keep an eye out on whether or not the shoes are wide enough to accommodate orthotic inserts or insoles should you need them. 'These features can help prevent injuries such as plantar fasciitis or stress fractures,' says Tabari. Materials: Since the material of the shoes can impact your comfort, look for options with a flexible upper like knit or mesh. This will provide more room for wide feet to move and will prevent you from feeling restricted in your sneakers. Toe box: Some sneakers have more of a pointed toe. Podiatrists recommend avoiding these if you have wide feet, as they may pinch around your toes. Instead, look for shoes with a round, square or wide toe box. This will allow you the space you need for your toes to splay and spread without rubbing against the side of your sneakers and potentially causing blisters, says Dr. Alissa Kuizinas, a board-certified podiatrist in Boston. To recommend the best women's wide sneakers for running and/or walking, I asked podiatrists to share their favorites and included NBC Select staff favorites that come in wide width, along with a few highly rated options. I have wide feet and these are my go-to sneakers — I've run multiple half marathons and they have never felt tight or constrictive. Hoka is known for its shock-absorbing soles and supportive uppers. The toe box is nearly as wide as the rest of the shoe, so your toes have plenty of room to splay out. The shoe's bottom has a rocker shape for smoother heel-to-toe transitions and the upper is made from breathable mesh, according to the brand. This shoe is also available in a version for men. Featured in our roundup of the best walking shoes, this style from Ryka comes in a wide width and is an NBC Select staff favorite. 'I've never had dedicated walking shoes before, and this pair from Ryka showed me just how much of a difference they can make,' says Sadhana Daruvuri, former NBC Select social editor. She wears them while walking her dog, in the park or around New York City to run errands. 'Even when I'm in them for hours, my feet still feel cushioned and comfortable.' The lace-up sneakers are specifically designed around the shape of women's feet, so the brand gave them a narrower heel, a roomy toe box and soft cushioning in the midsole. They also have a grippy rubber outsole, arch support built into the insole and extra cushioning in the forefoot and heel. At under $100, these sneakers are an affordable wide width option. They have a breathable mesh upper and gel technology in the heel to provide extra cushioning and comfort, according to the brand. The shoe, which has a 4.4-star average rating from over 400 reviews on Amazon, also has deep treads, making it a good running shoe for various environments — like parks, streets and trails. Skechers' slip-on walking sneakers are one of the more affordable options on my list and have a 4.5-star average rating from nearly 100,000 reviews on Amazon. They have a mesh upper so your feet don't get sweaty, lightweight cushioning and come in narrow, medium and wide widths. The sneakers also have flexible, grippy outsoles and memory foam insoles. Though these sneakers don't technically come in a wide width, NBC Select SEO editor Nikki Brown vouches for the fact that they work on wider feet. 'My feet are very flat and wide and these shoes leave lots of room for my toes,' she says. 'I love how sturdy they feel for workouts and casual walks and the fact that they're also stylish is a major plus.' The molded heel offers support and the breathable upper is lightweight, according to Nike. Like the running shoes from New Balance on my list, these walking sneakers come in wide and extra wide widths. They have a stylish vintage look, in my opinion, but deliver on comfort, too. They have a padded footbed and rubber sole for traction. They are also reinforced around the ankle for extra support as you walk, according to the brand. Best for overpronators Another pick from our best walking shoes roundup, these shoes are a supportive stability shoe that help people who overpronate. The sneaker has a light, springy feel, according to the brand, a cushioned insole and a rubber outsole. Not only does this shoe come in wide widths, it is available in an extra wide width, too. The shoe also has a leather upper that looks crisp and is highly durable, according to Saucony. Tabari likes New Balance sneakers for those with wide feet because they offer both a wide width and an extra wide width. These sneakers have the brand's Fresh Foam X midsole to provide extra cushioning without increasing the weight of the shoe, according to the brand. They have a rocker profile to propel you forward and a rubber sole for traction. The shoe also goes up to a size 13 for those with larger feet. These shoes don't technically come in a wide width, but they are designed with a wide toe box, says Kuizinas. Similar to the sneakers from Hoka, these have a rocker-shaped sole that helps to propel you forward as you run and the soles are made with compression foam for comfort. The upper is made with a flexible and breathable mesh material. Most durable This sneaker made our list of best running shoes thanks to the durability of its carbon rubber outer and cushioned sole. The shoe comes in both regular and wide widths and goes up to a size 12. The heel of this shoe contains Mizuno's energy foam, which provides cushioning and energy return, according to the brand. The upper is seamless to prevent rubbing and friction as you move. What happens when shoes aren't wide enough for your feet? When your shoes aren't wide enough to accommodate your feet, a number of problems can arise. First, you'll likely get blisters where the shoe rubs against your feet. Shoes that are too narrow can also put unnecessary pressure on your feet. 'Wide shoes provide more room for the toes to spread out naturally, reducing pressure and friction on the toes and forefoot,' says Tabari. 'Tight shoes can restrict blood flow to the toes, leading to discomfort and even potential circulation issues.' Other issues caused by shoes that aren't wide though include ingrown toenails, bunions and cramping. When walking or running in shoes that are too narrow for your feet, you may also start overcompensating to avoid discomfort, says Kuizinas. This can lead to back pain, rolling your ankle or a number of other injuries. How to tell if your shoes are too narrow Not sure if your sneakers are wide enough for your feet? 'If you experience any rubbing on the big toe or pinky, your shoes are too narrow,' says Kuizinas. 'You should be able to wiggle your toes properly in your shoe.' Another area where people commonly notice discomfort in narrow shoes is across the middle of the foot. If your foot feels cramped or the upper feels too tight there, you need a wider width. The best mineral sunscreens for dark skin, tested by our editors

For a long time, I'd given up on mineral sunscreens — as someone with dark skin, it felt impossible to find options that didn't leave a white cast. This problem exists for some chemical sunscreens too, but mineral ingredients are harder to blend out, in my experience. Thankfully, some mineral formulas have improved, and the range of options has expanded, so we decided to put some to the test. Check out our favorite picks below as well as expert advice for choosing one of your own. How I picked the best mineral sunscreens for dark skin Mineral sunscreens all contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, which are the active ingredients that help protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays (more about these ingredients below). Besides avoiding the dreaded white cast, I kept a few other things in mind while compiling this list: Minimum SPF of 30: SPF, also known as sun protection factor, measures a formula's protection level against the sun's rays — the American Academy of Dermatology recommends an SPF of 30 or higher. The SPF number indicates the amount of time the sunscreen will prevent UV damage compared to the amount of time with no sunscreen; for example, while wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30, it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you weren't wearing sunscreen at all. Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide: These are the key active ingredients in mineral sunscreens. Water-resistant options: Water-resistant sunscreens are great for workouts, swimming, and any other activities where you may be sweating or getting wet. I included options that provide a water resistance of at least 40 minutes. How we tested the best mineral sunscreens for dark skin Our NBC Select staff tested over 100 sunscreens for six weeks to find the very best formulas for summer (and beyond). While testing, we tried dozens of mineral sunscreens and of those, we found some brown skin-friendly formulas for different skin types and activities. We tested on a range of brown skin tones and skin types, including dry, oily, sensitive and acne-prone skin, and wore the sunscreens to work, to the gym, outdoors, and more. Here is some of the key criteria we kept in mind while testing: Consistency: What's the sunscreen's texture like? Is it invisible? Which skin type does it work best for? Appearance: Is there any white cast upon application? If so, how long does it take to absorb/fade? Does it reappear when sweating? Usage: How often did you use the sunscreen? What did you do while wearing it? Which activities are the sunscreen best suited for? Wear over time: Did the sunscreen drip or melt throughout the day? Did it get greasy as the day went on? Price: Would we rebuy these formulas with our own money? Would we purchase them at full price, on a discount, or not at all? Want more from NBC Select? The best mineral sunscreens for dark skin in 2025 Below I gathered our favorite mineral sunscreens for dark skin, including tested picks from NBC Select staff, products from previous coverage, and top-rated options from bestselling brands across the web. Best overall When a sunscreen claims to have a 'universal tint', my guard automatically goes up, but Herbivore's Star Seed sunscreen proved my doubts wrong. It's formulated to work with all skin types, hydrates the skin's moisture barrier with prebiotics, and evens skin tone with vitamin C, according to the brand. It has a creamy texture that feels more like a primer than sunscreen, and a light, orange-ish tint. Although I can't speak to exactly how universal the tint is, the sunscreen absorbs within minutes and gives me zero white cast while blending really well into my skin. I also love how well it holds up on my oilier skin — even on my shiniest days, the most I'll get is a soft glow as my oil starts to break through after a few hours of wear. The sunscreen can also double as a primer. This sunscreen is another one of my mineral favorites, but fair warning — you may need to wait a little bit for this one to absorb. NBC Select commerce editor Cory Fernandez was also initially worried by the sunscreen's subtle tint, but says it blended into his skin and around his facial hair perfectly within a few minutes, sans white cast. It has a very fluid, lightweight texture that sits on your skin without feeling too heavy, and is gentle enough to use on sensitive skin. Fernandez, who has combination skin, likes that it doesn't cause irritation or burn his eyes while walking outside. I especially recommend this sunscreen for anyone with drier skin, since it's full of hydrators, including hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Both NBC Select commerce editor Jordan Bowman and NBC Select editorial operations associate Jem Alabi were pleasantly surprised by how well this sunscreen worked for their skin tones. 'It has a purple or pink colored hue and I thought it would leave a noticeable white cast as I applied it to my face, but it blended in fairly easily,' says Bowman. He also likes that it didn't leave much of a cast over his facial hair, which he says has been an issue with other formulas he's tried, and that the sunscreen didn't run white during his sweaty, intensive tennis games. Alabi, who's used and loved Dr. Loretta's products in the past, says the sunscreen's light, moisturizer-like texture is one of the few American formulas that doesn't leave her greasy. It has ectoin, for added hydration, and antioxidants to shield your skin from free radical damage, and protects against UVA, UVB, and HEV blue light rays, according to the brand. Cerave is an NBC Select-favorite brand brand — this sunscreen comes recommended by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry in our roundup of the best sunscreens for dark skin. The sunscreen has a blend of yellow, red and black iron oxides, which together create a tint that blends out on all skin tones, according to the brand. It's also noncomedogenic and fragrance-free, making it great for sensitive skin, and uses ceramides to hydrate and plump the skin. Alabi first saw this Good Weather Skin option in an ad starring one of her favorite Black models, which instantly made her curious about the sunscreen's effectiveness on darker skin. She has since tried it, and says the sunscreen's fluid texture and dewy finish is 'perfect for summer.' She also loves that it blends in quickly. The sunscreen is made with niacinamide and seabuckthorn oil to help improve the texture and appearance of your skin, and squalane for hydration, according to the brand. As someone who prefers a very matte look, Alabi says she likes to use a bit of setting powder over this sunscreen to help diffuse the shine a bit. This sunscreen has a tinted finish that's designed to seamlessly absorb into skin of all tones, according to the brand. Along with the usual mineral active ingredients, Dr. Few's formula includes green tea to reduce free radical damage and avocado oil to add moisture to the skin. It has a lightweight cream texture and is also great for oily skin, with reviewers saying it helps to reduce shine as the day goes by. Good Molecules' Sheer Mineral Sunscreen has a hydrating formula that uses hyaluronic acid, grapeseed oil and tucuma seed butter to lock moisture into the skin, according to the brand. Although its lightweight, non-greasy formula may take a few minutes to fully absorb, it dries down into a dewy finish that former NBC Select reporter Bianca Alavarez says sits well under makeup. It's also noncomedogenic, making it a solid and affordable option for acne-prone skin. How to shop for mineral sunscreens for dark skin As with any other skin care product, it's important to keep your skin type and concerns in mind when picking a mineral sunscreen. Here are a few more tips to consider while shopping for one: Choose sunscreens with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30, which the Skin Cancer Foundation says protects against 97% of the sun's rays. For oily or acne-prone skin, be sure to check for 'noncomedogenic' labels, which means the product doesn't contain ingredients that are more likely to clog pores, like mineral oil or petroleum. For dry skin, keep an eye out for hydrating formulas that include ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, aloe vera and more. If you'll be swimming or sweating, choose sunscreens labeled as water-resistant, with at least 40 minutes of resistance for good measure. Lastly, to avoid a white cast, look for lightweight, sheerer formulas that are more likely to seamlessly absorb into your skin (and always check reviews). Why trust NBC Select? I'm an associate SEO reporter for NBC Select, covering skin care and wellness topics like sunscreens for dark skin and acne spot treatments. For this piece, myself and the NBC select staff tested dozens of mineral sunscreens to find the formulas that work best for dark skin.
