Caregiver support scheme likely for those with benchmark disabilities
New Delhi: To help persons with benchmark disabilities having serious mobility issues, Delhi govt is working on a proposal to provide them with financial assistance to avail themselves of the services of caregivers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Delhi social welfare minister Ravindra Indraj Singh told TOI that his department was working on a scheme and would soon bring a proposal before the council of ministers for its approval. "The project was discussed in the cabinet once. We will finalise the proposal soon and place it before the council of ministers again for approval," Singh said. The minister added the kin of persons with a benchmark disability of 80% or more would be provided with financial assistance, benefitting nearly 1,000 families. The department will soon conduct a survey on the number of people who will get the aid. Though the exact amount of the aid was yet to be finalised, the minister said, it could be around Rs 5,000. Delhi govt currently provides a monthly pension of Rs 2,500 to the disabled, but this amount is often too little for people from disadvantaged sections. Persons with benchmark disabilities are those who have not less than 40% of a specified disability, as per the disability certificate or the UDID card. There are 21 disabilities categorised, including locomotor disability, intellectual disability, mental illness, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, among others.

Mukesh Ambani announces 151cr endowment to his alma mater ICT
Mumbai: When Mukesh Ambani — India's richest man and chairman of Reliance Industries — returned to his alma mater, the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), he didn't just bring memories and his speech. He brought a tribute. A Rs 151-crore endowment, the largest in the institute's history, was announced on Friday. The occasion was the launch of Anita Patil's 'The Divine Scientist', a biography of Padma Vibhushan professor Man Mohan Sharma, described by many as the towering intellect who shaped Indian chemical engineering talent. When speaking of Guru Dakshina, Ambani announced the grant of Rs 151 crore to ICT, as per Sharma's instructions. "When he tells us something, we just told me, 'Mukesh, you have to do something big for ICT', and I am pleased to announce that for Prof Sharma," Ambani said, referring to the grant. "Most respected Prof Sharma," he addressed everyone, "my fellow Udcitians, coming to UDCT campus, I still call it that, has always felt like coming to a sacred temple. Prof Sharma, my warm respects to you as my most respected guru, my mentor, and my enduring source of inspiration." Praising Patil, he said: "It is a Herculean task to chronicle the life of a legend like Sharma." "I chose UDCT over IIT-Bombay," Ambani said, recalling the conviction of youth. That conviction was sealed when he attended Sharma's very first lecture. "I realised he is an alchemist, not of metals, but minds: he has the power to transform curiosity into knowledge, knowledge into commercial value, and both knowledge and commercial value into everlasting wisdom." Crediting the rise of the Indian chemical industry to Sharma's efforts, Ambani referred to him as a 'Rashtra Guru — a Guru of Bharat'. "He is our Yugpurush," said prof J B Joshi, former head of ICT. Not with reverence alone, but with the clarity of someone who saw how Sharma's life was distilled into a single principle: "Be a good teacher, do research at the frontier of knowledge, and use that for industry and society." Prof G D Yadav, former head at ICT, offered a staggering number — 1,300 PhDs trace their academic lineage to Sharma, directly or through those he mentored. "He is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent," said Yadav, invoking a title rarely uttered outside epics: "Bhramarishi." MKU prof to receive TN scientist award in biological sciences
Madurai: An associate professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology at the School of Biotechnology at Madurai Kamaraj University, Varalakshmi Perumal, has been selected for the Tamil Nadu Scientist Award (TANSA) 2023 by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology in the discipline of Biological Sciences. According to a statement, Varalakshmi's primary research interests focus on exploring algal metabolites for therapeutic and bioenergy applications. For the past decade, her major research thrust at MKU was on 'Unveiling bioactive metabolites of underexplored algae and their associated bacteria from the coastal regions of South India', particularly investigating their potential against non-communicable diseases (NCDs). While current treatments for NCDs largely rely on bioactive molecules derived from terrestrial plants, marine sources remain largely untapped. This has driven her search for multimodal-acting compounds from marine macroalgae, especially brown algae, which are rich in complex bioactive metabolites such as phlorotannins with strong pharmacological potential. So far, Varalakshmi characterised more than 10 novel compounds from marine algae with therapeutic potential against diabetes, obesity, epilepsy, and cervical cancer.
