Marten Van Riel promises best is yet to come in T100 Triathlon
The Belgian athlete was left disappointed with a sixth-placed finish in San Francisco two weeks ago that dented his hopes of winning back-to-back T100 titles.
But Van Riel roared back from his sub-par showing in the States with a second place in Vancouver, as he took silver behind the fast-finishing Jelle Geens.
It moves Van Riel top of the overall standings after he also finished third in Singapore in April, but the Belgian is confident he has even more to bring to the table later in the year.
'I think Rico [Bogen] and Jelle have really shown their cards in the last couple of races, and I think I'm just not quite there yet,' he said.
'I got a little bit sick on altitude training in the preparation [for this race] and I feel and know that my run isn't quite 100%. To be this close to Jelle on the run, who's one of the best in the sport is actually good for my morale.
'My bike is really good at the moment so I'm confident I've got more in the tank for the Race To Qatar.
'We've seen the top athletes get good scores and I hope Hayden [Wilde] returns as soon as possible because he really showed up in Singapore for the first race, so I don't count him out at all. It's going to be very interesting, especially with double points for the final in Qatar.'
Van Riel took the mantle on the bike leg but was quickly joined by Rico Bogen, Kyle Smith and Mika Noodt.
Both Noodt and Smith endured drafting penalties at separate points, but were able to keep themselves in touching distance of Van Riel and Bogen, who were the first to hit the run.
But a storming comeback from Geens earned him the victory and forced Van Riel to settle for second.
'It was a hard swim, because there was a current pushing us either into the buoys or away from the buoys,' reflected Van Riel.
'Then topped off with a very tough run, but I'm very happy to be on the podium again.
'I was leading at the start of the bike and it took a long time for someone to challenge me. I thought, damn, I must be strong in aero today! I was happy with that.'

Issame Charai, who left Ibrox last week, has been appointed by the Belgian side, according to journalist Sacha Tovolieri. CEO Patrick Stewart expressed his gratitude to Charai for his work at the club, saying: "I want to place on record the sincere thanks of both the club and I to Issame for his work over the past six months. "For whatever comes next for him, I want to wish him the very best of luck. "He will always be welcome back at Ibrox."

Jess Learmonth delighted with T100 Triathlon podium
Learmonth took third place in Canada behind defending champion Taylor Knibb and Julie Derron. It marked a breakthrough result for Learmonth, who upgraded from finishes of 13th and seventh in Singapore and San Francisco respectively to stake her claim as a contender heading into the rest of the season. 'I am totally shocked to get on the podium,' she said. 'It was enjoyable, I was having the best time. I've not ran much so I thought if I could have a good swim and bike, we will see what happens. 'Taylor keeps it very honest and keeps the pressure on, which helps a lot. I got a nice gap and felt pretty comfortable on the run. 'It is so difficult to push the pace at the front and [Taylor] does that so well. It was really good to have someone to ride with, it helps to have someone to keep the pressure on. I was just focussed on staying together.'] Third place moves Learmonth into fourth in the overall standings behind Derron, Knibb and fellow Brit Kate Waugh, who was absent in Vancouver. Compatriot Lucy Charles-Barclay is just a point behind in fifth after she finished fourth in Canada, with the Brits likely to all be eyeing up a home race in London on 9 August. It is the next stop on the global T100 Triathlon Tour, which will also make stops on the French Riviera, Valencia, Las Vegas and Dubai before culminating in its final in Qatar in December. A place on the podium is particularly poignant for Learmonth, as she continues her return to the top of the sport after giving birth to her son Frederick in September 2023.
