Saudi investment ecosystem drives growth in Asir region, says top executive

Arab News28-05-2025

ABHA: Saudi Arabia's integrated investment ecosystem is enhancing the attractiveness of the Kingdom's business environment across all regions, with Asir standing out as a promising destination, according to a senior executive.
During a panel session at the second Asir Investment Forum in Abha, Khalid Al-Khattaf, CEO of the Saudi Investment Promotion Authority, highlighted the region's unique natural, economic, and cultural assets that position it for significant potential, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The session highlighted the region's tourism transformation and the roles of government entities and the private sector in driving projects and fostering an investment-friendly environment.
Al-Khattaf noted that Saudi Arabia boasts one of the world's most competitive environments, thanks in part to the efforts of the National Committee for Identifying and Developing Opportunities, which has introduced over 1,900 investment prospects valued at more than SR1 trillion ($266.6 billion) across 22 vital sectors.
These opportunities align with Vision 2030 and the National Investment Strategy, which aims to double investment volume and attract SR12.4 trillion by 2030. Sector-specific strategies also offer long-term visibility and regulatory stability for investors.
'We have presented more than 1,900 opportunities through the 'Invest in Saudi Arabia' platform, including sectors such as tourism, hospitality, agriculture, real estate and others,' Al-Khattaf said.
Furthermore, the Kingdom's strategic geographic location, at the crossroads of three continents and within reach of over half the world's population in seven hours, positions it as a global hub for business, tourism, and services.
Al-Khattaf emphasized Asir's unique offerings, including 80 percent of the Kingdom's forests, its highest mountain peak, more than 4,000 historical villages, and globally recognized heritage sites such as Rijal Almaa.
He highlighted that the region is well-positioned to become a premier tourism and investment destination, particularly as Saudi Arabia channels over $800 billion into tourism projects to help meet its goal of attracting 150 million visitors by 2030.
He also pointed to key investment enablers, such as exemptions from foreign investment fees, accommodation levies, government land charges, and value-added tax.
Al-Khattaf outlined the pivotal role of the Saudi Investment Marketing Authority in promoting investment prospects throughout the Kingdom, particularly in high-potential regions such as Asir. This includes digital platforms, international events, and direct investor engagements.
A dedicated Asir page is featured on the new version of the platform in seven languages, highlighting key indicators, opportunities, and reports, including a special 'Invest in Asir' report developed by the Ministry of Investment to inform investors of the region's advantages.
The authority, in collaboration with its partners in the investment system, continues to improve the legal and regulatory environment, SPA reported.
A new law now allows for 100 percent foreign ownership and guarantees equal rights for both local and international investors.
'We have developed a program to listen to investors and understand their challenges, in addition to focusing on improving the investor experience through comprehensive service centers, relationship managers, the 'Investor Journey' guide, and dedicated reports such as 'Invest in Asir,' in addition to investor listening programs to ensure that challenges are addressed directly,' Al-Khattaf said.
He also noted the authority's close coordination with the Asir Development Authority to align with the region's strategy and future goals. This collaboration has led to the identification of over 46 high-quality opportunities in the tourism sector.
As of the end of 2023, direct investments in Asir had exceeded SR7.68 billion, placing it sixth among the Kingdom's regions in terms of foreign investment stock.
The number of active foreign investment licenses in Asir reached 467 by early 2025, reflecting growing investor interest and confidence in the region's potential and investment environment.

Madinah Prepares for Air Departures as Pilgrims Head Home Post-Hajj

Government entities in the Madinah Region have begun seeing off pilgrims returning to their home countries through the Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport, after performing Hajj this year with ease and tranquility. Following Hajj, large numbers of pilgrims are arriving in Madinah to pray at the Prophet's Mosque and extend their greetings to Prophet Muhammad and his two companions. To streamline their departure, a program has been implemented to facilitate their transfer from residences to the airport, the Saudi Press Agency said on Monday. The program is overseen by the Hajj and Visit Committee in the region and relevant entities to ensure the orderly and timely departure of flights to various destinations. Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport achieved notable success during the pre-Hajj phase, efficiently handling the Hajj flights. During the arrival period, the airport received 719,400 pilgrims, accounting for 49% of pilgrims arriving by air to the Kingdom this Hajj season. Starting from 1 Dhul-Qi'dah, 1,910 flights carrying pilgrims from 196 cities in 53 countries arrived at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport, operated by 65 airlines. This accounted for 60% of all Hajj flights received by Saudi airports during the arrival phase.

Novice UK sailors arrive in Jeddah after surviving epic Hajj voyage

MINA: A group of six pilgrims with no previous sailing experience who set off from London on a 59-day maritime adventure have praised Saudi authorities for the welcome they received after finally completing their Hajj voyage. The UK-based group, aged between 27 and 47, set sail on April 1 and arrived in Jeddah on May 27, just one week before the start of Hajj. Each member brought a unique set of skills, from IT professionals to community organizers, but none had formal maritime training. Together, they learned to navigate, maintain their vessel, and endure weeks at sea, often facing unpredictable weather and challenging conditions. The six pilgrims — Abdul Wahid, Tauseef Ahmed, Jody McIntyre, Dobbir Uddin, Taher Akhtar, and Ayaz Khan — made several stops across Europe and North Africa during their journey, sharing the highs and lows of life at sea with a growing community of followers on social media. Speaking to Arab News at Mina during Hajj, Wahid, the captain, said that the voyage had been a memorable and life-changing experience. His favorite moment came after setting off from the Gulf of Suez on the final leg of the journey. Seeing mountains in the distance — the first sign of Saudi Arabia after days of storms and rough seas — brought pure joy. In that moment, he knew they had made it. Reflecting on their arrival and experience of Hajj, Wahid praised the exceptional care and organization. He said the pilgrimage itself felt calm and manageable compared with the challenges of the sea voyage. Wahid said the Saudi authorities treated pilgrims like honored guests, with ambulances stationed throughout, volunteers offering water and ice packs, and a clear sense that everyone was committed to making the experience spiritual and memorable. 'They're (Saudi authorities) looking after them (pilgrims), and they're trying to make sure that there's nothing you need. You're walking down the street, the Boy Scout is there handing you an ice pack to put on your hot head... The policeman passes you a bottle of water... The fire station isn't just a fire station, they're standing outside spraying people down with water to cool them off,' he said. 'Every single person here is engaged in trying to make sure that Hajj is an enjoyable, spiritual, wonderful experience.' Another crew member, Ayaz Khan, said that the challenge of sailing to Hajj was 'about pushing himself beyond limits and embracing the spiritual significance of the pilgrimage.' Khan also spoke of the profound welcome awaiting them onshore, saying that the reception was beyond anything he imagined — a dream come true. His family had never been to Hajj before. When he told his mother he was sailing, she was worried, but he told her that this was bigger than him — it was the chance to complete a sacred journey. The adventure route led the group through the English Channel and on to Marseille before passing the Mediterranean islands of Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, and Crete. They sailed through the Suez Canal and finally the Red Sea before arriving in Jeddah. The seafaring pilgrims spent almost two months off-grid and battling storms on the 1978 Westerly 33 ketch. Khan said that the maritime pilgrimage has reminded the crew members that the path to spiritual fulfillment often requires navigating uncharted waters — both literally and metaphorically. But with perseverance, humility, and trust, even the most turbulent seas can lead to sacred destinations.
