Italy squeeze past Belgium at Euro 2025 as grieving Portugal await Spain
Arianna Caruso thumped in the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time to give the Italians all three points in Sion and provisional first place in Group B.

Bayern Munich midfielder Caruso's strike was the only real highlight of a game which began with a moment's silence for Portugal men's star Diogo Jota who died in a car crash earlier on Thursday.
Both matches on Thursday and Friday will feature the tribute to Jota whose death at 28 years old with his younger brother Andre Silva stunned the football community.
Spain's Civil Guard said a vehicle veered off a motorway and burst into flames shortly after midnight in the municipality of Cernadilla in the northwestern Zamora province.
The Civil Guard added that they believed the crash was caused by a blown out tyre as an overtaking manoeuvre was being performed with his Lamborghini.
His compatriots in Portugal's women's team will line up against Spain later on Thursday in Bern where fans of both sides will join in honouring the memory of Jota.

Body of Liverpool footballer Jota arrives in Portugal for hometown wake
GONDOMAR, Portugal (Reuters) -The bodies of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva arrived in northern Portugal on Friday for a wake in their hometown, as tributes continued to pour in after they died in a car accident in Spain. A convoy of hearses left for Gondomar near Porto on Thursday evening from the morgue of Puebla de Sanabria, near where the Lamborghini the brothers were travelling in had veered off the road and burst into flames after midnight early on Thursday. Police said they suspected a tyre had burst. Jota's wife Rute Cardoso, who had married the footballer just weeks earlier, was seen leaving the morgue and joining the convoy, as was Jota's longtime agent Jorge Mendes. A wake is expected to take place at a chapel in Gondomar from 4:00 p.m. (1500 GMT) and a funeral on Saturday at a church nearby at 10:00 a.m. local time, Gondomar's mayor's office said. Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro arrived in the village on Friday morning. The death of Jota at the age of 28 has jolted the world of football, with messages of homage pouring in from former teammates, clubs, national leaders and fans. Outside Liverpool's Anfield stadium fans left flowers, scarves and hand-written notes, many from children. Football clubs including Paris St Germain, who have several Portuguese internationals in their squad, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid observed a moment of silence during training for their matches in the Club World Cup taking place in the United States. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said on Thursday that forward Pedro Neto was weighing whether to play in Friday's quarter-final against Palmeiras, as the Portuguese international mourns the tragic death of his close friend. Jota's manager at Liverpool, Arne Slot, said in a statement on Thursday that his thoughts were with his family. "My message to them is very clear – you will never walk alone," Slot said. "For us as a club, the sense of shock is absolute. Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us. He was a teammate, a colleague, a workmate and in all of those roles he was very special," he added. Jota was making his way back to Liverpool by car after he was told he should avoid plane travel for up to 6 weeks following lung surgery to address a fractured rib, his physiotherapist Miguel Goncalves told broadcaster Now late on Thursday. Goncalves said Jota was recovering well from the pneumothorax surgery and that he had planned to take a ferry to the UK from Spain.

🔎🇪🇸 Spain at EURO 2025: Can the world champions add another title?
Spain's EURO 2025 journey begins on Thursday. Here's what you need to know as they kick off their campaign in Switzerland ... 📚 What's the story? Spain arrived at Euro 2022 ready to crown a golden generation but lost Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas on the eve of the tournament and ended up losing to England. Advertisement They went on to win the 2023 World Cup but that was bookended by scandals to do with the coach, the welfare of the players, and ultimately the head of the Spanish Federation. They're out of that now and they arrive in Switzerland as huge favourites. The expectations couldn't be higher. ⭐️ Star player 📸 David Ramos - 2025 Getty Images Where do you even start? Spain have the aforementioned Alexia Putellas — one of two Ballon d'Or winners in the squad — they have Mariona Caldentey, who won the WSL Player of the Season with Arsenal, they boast Barcelona regulars Patri Guijarro and Ona Battle, plus superstars in the making in Salma Paralluelo and Clàudia Pina. Advertisement It's hard to pick one star player but it's also hard not to plump for Aitana Bonmatí. The back-to-back Ballon d'Or winner can control games and she can decide them. Unfortunately she was hospitalised with viral meningitis right before the tournament. Spain have the depth to cope if she isn't at her best, but they're close to unstoppable if she can recover well enough to deliver. 👀 One to watch 📸 JAVIER SORIANO - AFP or licensors As of the start of the summer, 23-year-old Clàudia Pina has never started a game at a major tournament. That should change in Switzerland. The Barcelona forward can drop deep and combine with Spain's possession game, taking things slowly and helping the team keep control, but she will crucially burst into life at the right moment with a run in behind. A direct threat who doesn't disrupt the flow, she has a nose for goal and it could be decisive. Advertisement Likely 1️⃣1️⃣ (4-3-3): Coll; Batlle, Paredes, Aleixandri, Carmona; Bonmatî, Guijarro, Putellas; Caldentey, González, Pina. Can they win it? 🏆 They can, and they probably should. 📸 Justin Setterfield - 2023 Getty Images

Report – Inter Milan Line Up Fiorentina & Italy Star In Case Of Premier League Target's Exit
Report – Inter Milan Line Up Fiorentina & Italy Star In Case Of Premier League Target's Exit Inter Milan have reportedly lined up Fiorentina striker Moise Kean as a replacement in case Marcus Thuram leaves this summer. This according to today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Il Giorno, via FCInterNews. They report that Inter are wary of Premier League clubs potentially triggering Thuram's release clause. Advertisement Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram has a release clause in his contract worth €85 million. Obviously, this is a very high fee. However, a player of the Frenchman's calibre could certainly be worth it to some of Europe's elite. Teams like Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have targeted Thuram in the past. And according to Il Giorno, the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal could very well be tempted into moving for Thuram. Both are currently in search of a striker. Moreover, the newspaper note, Thuram appears to be somewhat discontent after harsh comments by Inter captain Lautaro Martinez earlier this week. Advertisement And if Thuram were to leave for €85 million, it would represent a gargantuan profit for Inter. The Nerazzurri signed the France international on a free transfer two years ago. Inter Line Up Fiorentina Striker Moise Kean As Potential Thuram Replacement FLORENCE, ITALY – APRIL 13: Moise Kean of ACF Fiorentina reacts during the Serie A match between Fiorentina and Parma at Stadio Artemio Franchi on April 13, 2025 in Florence, Italy. (Photo by) Clearly, if Marcus Thuram were to head for the exit door then Inter would look to replace him. According to Il Giorno, Inter have one target in mind in particular as a potential heir to the 27-year-old. Fiorentina striker Moise Kean has just come off the back of an absolutely explosive season. The Italian international scored 25 goals and made three assists in all competitions for La Viola. He really made good on the promise that he had long shown playing for Juventus, Everton, and PSG. Advertisement And Kean has a release clause of his own. A bid of €52 million would be enough to secure the 25-year-old's services from Fiorentina. Therefore, reports Il Giorno, Inter would see Kean as an ideal replacement for Thuram if the latter leaves.
