Two men have been charged in two separate stranger attacks in Vancouver, police announced Tuesday.
In one case, a man was charged after a woman was violently attacked, robbed and sexually assaulted in a Stanley Park bathroom on Monday.
Vancouver police were called to Second Beach on Monday just before 11 a.m. after a witness spotted a man entering the women's change room at the pool.
Officers who arrived at the pool found a woman in her 40s inside the change room who had been robbed and assaulted. She was taken to hospital for treatment.
Officers searched the area and a suspect was arrested nearby.
Hartley Ronald Duckhorn, 35, has been charged with assault by choking, unlawful confinement, sexual assault with a weapon, robbery and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.
Duckhorn remains in custody while awaiting a bail hearing.
Meanwhile, another man has been charged following a stranger attack in downtown Vancouver last week.
Police said a 70-year-old man was walking near Homer and West Pender streets around 3 p.m. on May 16 when a stranger suddenly approached and knocked him to the ground, causing the victim to hit his head.
The suspect then walked off without helping the victim. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police in the area were able to track down the suspect later that day on Granville Street.
Derrick James McFeeters, 40, is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm. He also remains in custody while awaiting a bail hearing.

Vancouver man arrested after driving into Pacific Coliseum entrance during Cirque du Soleil show, police say

A 30-year-old man has been arrested after driving a vehicle into the Pacific Coliseum on Thursday night, say Vancouver police. The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said on X, formerly Twitter, that the suspect drove a vehicle into the front entrance of the arena, located at East Vancouver's Hastings Park, during a Cirque du Soleil performance. Arena security detained the man and police officers took him into custody. Police said that while it is still early in the investigation, the incident "does not appear to be an act of terrorism." The suspect, a Vancouver resident, was apprehended under the Mental Health Act, police said. At a Thursday night press conference outside the arena, VPD Sgt. Steve Addison said police believe the driver was "experiencing some sort of mental health psychosis." Police said there are no reported injuries. B.C. Emergency Health Services said it received a call at 8:02 p.m. regarding a single-vehicle collision at Pacific Coliseum. Three units responded to the scene and paramedics transported one patient. "There were lots of people here, thousands of people inside and outside of the venue," Addison said Thursday night. "We're relieved. It's a miracle that nobody was killed."

Alameda County jurors' compensation cut back to $15 a day

(KRON) — A pilot program providing Alameda County Superior Court jurors with $100 per day in compensation is being paused indefinitely. Any juror selected to serve for a trial after June 4 will only receive $15 daily, court officials said. The goal for paying jurors $100, instead of a meager $15, was to diversify jury pools. Alameda County Superior Court Judge Thomas Nixon said, 'Jurors are an essential part of our judicial system, and we need to do all we can to increase participation.' During jury selection, prospective jurors can request to be dismissed by a judge for a wide range of reasons. Financial hardships are common reasons for dismissal requests. Man who allegedly gunned down 2 people at Vallejo encampment captured: VPD The Jury Pilot Program was created as part of AB1981, which was signed by Newsom in 2022. In a notice sent this week to seven superior courts participating in the $100 per day pilot program, the Judicial Council of California requested that each court suspend the program because Gov. Gavin Newsom's revised budget cut funding. The National Center for State Courts, which was tracking juror demographics and diversity in all seven counties, was scheduled to release a report at the conclusion of the pilot program. The status of that report is currently unknown given the program is ending less than halfway through its designed length of time, court officials said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
