
Carlsberg Malaysia's Q1 earnings higher at RM94.5mil, revenue lower at RM662.8mil
KUALA LUMPUR: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd reported an 8.7 per cent lower revenue but a 7.5 per cent higher net profit for the first quarter ended March 31 2025.
Its net profit stood at RM94.5 million on the back of a RM662.8 million turnover, Carlsberg Malaysia said today.
"We delivered a solid first quarter of the year, despite subdued consumer spending in an environment with increased macroeconomic volatility," said Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Stefano Clini.
"We remain committed to staying agile and responsive to market dynamics and competition in both Malaysia and Singapore, ensuring that we continue delivering value to our consumers and stakeholders," he added.
The company said the lower top-line performance was impacted by the shorter Chinese New Year timing, as part of the festive sales had already been captured in December 2024.
A higher base was also recorded in same quarter last year, due to the additional trade purchases in March 2024, ahead of the price increase that took place in April 2024.
The absence of additional deferred tax liabilities from foreign withholding tax in the company's Sri Lankan-based associate company Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC recognised in the first quarter of FY2024, contributed to the higher net profit in the quarter under review.
Carlsberg Malaysia's earnings per share for the quarter stood at 28.76 sen, compared to 27.81 sen in Q1FY24.
The company announced the first interim dividend of 23 sen per share for the quarter.

Nairobi startup's bid to be 'operating system for global South'
PARIS: Away from the heady rush to build ultra-capable, sci-fi style artificial intelligence in Silicon Valley, ambitious Nairobi-based startup Amini AI is betting on the technology addressing emerging countries' prosaic problems in the here and now. Chief executive Kate Kallot aims for Amini – still a relatively small firm with US$6mil (RM 25.34mil) in funding and 25 employees – to become 'the operating system for the Global South' in the coming years, creating the infrastructure foundation for others to build AI and data processing applications. 'There is a huge opportunity for emerging economies to focus on more applied AI innovation rather than fundamental research, which is what a lot of the US and Europe is doing,' Kallot told AFP at the Vivatech trade fair in Paris. On its website, the company highlights uses of its platform such as slashing crop insurance costs for farmers across Africa by monitoring conditions, or warning dairy producers in Morocco of water sources at risk from climate change. Such efforts are only a hint of what will become possible as more data is collected, organised and processed from across the emerging world, Kallot believes. 'Data in Africa, Latin America, South-East Asia, a lot of these emerging economies is still analogue and still scattered and still unstructured,' she noted. 'There is a lot of work that needs to go into building that data infrastructure that can help those countries move from analogue systems to digital and help them be ready to move to AI.' Kallot said Amini's small team was helping multiple countries develop such infrastructure, highlighting a recent memorandum of understanding with Ivory Coast and projects in Barbados, India, Nepal and Cambodia. Digital natives short on data Western tech firms have notoriously turned to cheap labour from emerging economies for tasks upstream of AI, such as arduous labelling of vast datasets used to 'train' AI models to recognise patterns. But in countries like Kenya or the Philippines, 'you have a population that is digitally native, extremely young... a lot of them have studied computer science' and speak English, Kallot said. 'The problem they have is that they lack the opportunity to practice their craft, because these regions are still seen as consumers of technology and are still seen as regions where innovation doesn't happen.' This is also reflected in how data is stored and processed. A 2024 report from American research firm Xalam Analytics found that just one percent of the world's data centre capacity is located in Africa – a region with almost 19% of the global population. What's more, only 2% of African data gets processed on the continent, Kallot said. 'We're still in a very data-scarce environment, and until this is fixed we won't be able to adopt a lot of the very fancy new systems that are being put in place by... the big tech companies,' she pointed out. Frugal and local Kallot sees little fallout for now in emerging economies from the US-China confrontation over the advanced chips powering the top-performing AI models. But nations are 'becoming some sort of battleground' for infrastructure investment by the superpowers' tech giants like Huawei and Microsoft. One area where Kallot would like to see change is emerging countries coming together to build shared infrastructure like data centres, rather than relying on processing abroad or waiting for foreign firms to build them locally. 'Before, building critical infrastructure for your country meant building a road, building a hospital – today it's actually building the data infrastructure,' she said. The choice to leave data to be processed abroad risks 'erasing... a lot of your knowledge system and your culture', she warned, as most artificial intelligence training has not included information from much of the emerging world. Looking forward, the limited infrastructure and computing power available outside top economies may actually foster frugal innovations that save energy and resources, Kallot said. Emerging economies boast 'brilliant developers that are doing things that are extremely environmentally friendly, that know how to work in a very contained and constrained environment... we just have to surface it and make sure we give them a platform', Kallot said. – AFP

Australia, Japan combine to boost Cambodian cashew industry
Cambodian farmers sorting cashew nuts. -Australian embassy PHNOM PENH: Australia and Japan are collaborating to strengthen Cambodia's cashew industry by helping improve processing capabilities and the quality and flavour of the kingdom's nuts. In 2024, only about five per cent of the kingdom's harvested cashews were processed domestically, with the vast majority exported before value was added. According to June 10 post by the Australian embassy in Cambodia, Australia and Japan are working together to strengthen Cambodia's cashew sector through complementary support that can increase processing capacity and see more delicious, high quality Cambodian cashews reach global markets. It reiterated that only about five per cent of the 840,000 tonnes of cashews grown in Cambodia last year was processed in country. 'If more of this yield can be processed in Cambodia, the country can capture more value and generate more jobs and wealth,' it noted. The embassy added that, with support from both governments, Kampong Thom-based cashew processing company MIRARTH Agri Tech is 'helping to advance in-country processing, showcase Cambodia's cashews to global markets, and ensure smallholder farmers who grow these cashews benefit from more stable, fair prices'. Japanese support has helped the company improve supply chains and undertake feasibility studies for cashew processing and minimising waste. Australian backing, meanwhile, has helped MIRARTH enhance its export readiness, including through coaching, business matchmaking and participation in the 2025 World Cashew Conference – resulting in preliminary agreements with several companies. According to the embassy, MIRARTH plans to process 3,000 tonnes of cashew in 2025 and work towards a zero-waste approach. 'This collaborative approach between Australia and Japan reflects our shared commitment to advance high-potential sectors in Cambodia – improving productivity, employment and livelihoods whilst driving sustainable economic growth,' it said. The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC) previously reported that as of March 2025, Cambodia had 52 cashew processing enterprises, including 6 medium-sized factories (with production capacity between 7,000 and 140,000 tonnes annually). The remaining 46 enterprises are small, family-run businesses without year-round production. According to the association, Cambodia produced 850,000 tonnes of raw cashew nuts in 2024, with 815,000 tonnes exported — mostly to Vietnam — an increase of 21 per cent compared to 2023. The total export value was approximately $1.15 billion, up 26.1 per cent. Cambodia is currently home to about 700,000 hectares of cashew plantations, of which 580,117 hectares are harvest-ready, with the rest being newly planted areas. Cashews are grown in almost every province, but predominantly in Kampong Thom, Kratie, Ratanakiri, Stung Treng, Kampong Cham, Tboung Khmum, Preah Vihear, Siem Reap, Oddar Meanchey, Kampong Chhnang and Mondulkiri, according to the CAC. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

Wildberries plans to build a $150 million warehouse in Uzbekistan
TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN – Media OutReach Newswire – 12 June 2025 – Wildberries, a leading e-commerce platform in Eurasia, plans to spend $150 million on building a flagship warehouse in Uzbekistan to bolster the infrastructure of the country's growing e-commerce market. The company will construct a warehouse spanning 180,000 square meters (1.9 million square feet) in the Tashkent region and has already identified a land plot for it, Robert Mirzoyan, CEO of the merged company Wildberries & Russ, said at the IV Tashkent International Investment Forum. Over the past two years, the sales volume of Uzbekistan-based sellers on the Wildberries platform exceeded USD 1 billion, according to Mirzoyan. Deliveries of Uzbek textiles to Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, and Kazakhstan via Wildberries doubled last year, and exports of Uzbek products to Russia — the company's largest market — grew by 63%. 'Our goals in Uzbekistan are to create a full-fledged e-commerce infrastructure through logistics and fintech, unlock the country's export potential and integrate Uzbek products into global trade chains,' said Mirzoyan. As part of its support for local sellers, Wildberries has partnered with Uzbekistan's National Agency for Prospective Projects on the launch of a 'Green Corridor' for exporters. This initiative will simplify cross-border sales for Uzbek entrepreneurs on Wildberries, which currently operates in 10 countries. During the Tashkent International Investment Forum, the company also announced the launch of its Growth Platformin Uzbekistan, an initiative aimed at supporting and scaling up small and medium-sized businesses. Entrepreneurs will gain access to Wildberries & Russ' advanced digital advertising tools, training programs in online sales, and the company's extensive infrastructure to successfully export their products to other markets. At the initial stage, the Growth Platform will engage approximately 100 Uzbek entrepreneurs selected in consultation with Uzbekistan's Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade. Participants include manufacturers of clothing, home textiles, footwear, bags, cosmetics, household chemicals, and appliances. The initiative is expected to expand to include more sellers in the future.
