China To Host Pacific Foreign Ministers For First In-person Summit In Xiamen
Foreign ministers or reps from 11 islands that have diplomatic relations with Beijing will meet in Fujian province for the third China-Pacific Foreign Ministers' Meeting.Pacific Islands foreign ministers will be gathering in Fujian province for the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting this week.
In a statement, the Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry said Foreign Minister Wang Yi will chair the meeting in Xiamen scheduled for 28-29 May.
It said 'it will be the first of its kind to be held offline in China.'
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters at a daily news briefing on last Wednesday that foreign ministers or representatives from 11 island countries that have diplomatic relations with China, and the Pacific Islands Forum deputy secretary general Esala Nayasi will attend the meeting.
Mao said that the participants will have in-depth exchanges of views on all-round cooperation between China and Pacific Island countries, as well as on international and regional issues of mutual interest.
China is ready to leverage the upcoming meeting to implement the important consensuses reached by leaders of both sides, strengthen solidarity and coordination, pursue common development and prosperity, she said.
she said the objective of the meeting is to jointly build an even closer China-Pacific Island countries community with a shared future.
Mao said China highly value its ties with the Pacific Island countries, and friendly cooperation between the two sides has continued to deepen and expand in recent years.

Well-known Rangiora retailer moves to Sydenham

PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP A former Rangiora policewoman, who transformed her love of fabrics and homeware into a popular business in a residential area, has moved her shop to Christchurch. The Fabric of Society, which is owned by Emily Rowse, has begun trading at 6 Carlyle St in Sydenham, ending a long connection with its former Rangiora premises at 15 Coronation St. ''After many years in Rangiora we are thrilled to now call Sydenham home,'' Emily says. ''It is a vibrant design-forward neighbourhood that perfectly matches our aesthetic.'' The decision to move the business was made because Emily now lives in Christchurch, as do all of her staff. The move means the new shop will also be much closer to a larger population base of potential customers, not that trading in Rangiora was decreasing, as many of Emily's customers from around Canterbury told her they loved coming to Rangiora to shop. However, with the Chinese online marketplace behemoth Temu now offering a huge range of heavily discounted items, which is providing an irresistible lure for many shoppers, trading for all community-based retailers, such as The Fabric of Society, is becoming extremely challenging, Emily says. With this in mind, she wishes that consumers would consider the possible unintended consequences of such big support for online overseas shopping, which is the demise of retail businesses based in communities like Rangiora. She also wishes that consumers would consider the benefits of supporting retailers in their local communities, where the money they spend will not go overseas. The Fabric of Society began in July 2006 as Femme de Brocante, ''a made-up French saying that loosely translated means women who like old things'', upstairs in the Gables Arcade in Rangiora's High St before moving to the bigger space in Coronation St in 2009. The business was established to fill a gap in the market for affordable, designer fabrics and homeware from New Zealand, France and other nations worldwide. Emily took over Femme de Brocante in 2018 and decided it was a good time to also change the name of her business. ''Even my friends didn't know what Femme de Brocante meant,'' she says.

Disgraced ex-MP Maguire jailed for misleading corruption inquiry over Australian property deal
The former Liberal Party MP will be eligible for parole in January. In sentencing, Farnan told the court the misleading evidence given by Maguire concerned his dealings with a multimillion-dollar property development. 'The community is entitled to expect that those who hold power will conduct themselves with integrity,' she said. Maguire has maintained his innocence, saying he answered the Icac questions to the best of his ability. He is expected to file an appeal, with the court expected to resume on Wednesday morning before the magistrate to hear details of the appeal. Farnan said Maguire had displayed no remorse for his actions, though he had no history of similar offending, and his likelihood of reoffending remained low. 'The need for general deterrence does require a period of full-time imprisonment,' she said. While a 12-month stint behind bars was initially to be ordered, Maguire was offered a two-month discount because of delays in the court proceedings. Farnan also took into account the impact of 'significant media interest' in the case on the 66-year-old's mental health. Maguire, eligible for parole in January, plans to appeal the conviction. During the Icac probe, Maguire denied asking to receive a financial benefit for brokering a property deal in the Sydney suburb of Canterbury. However, in recorded phone conversations, the former MP admitted he had asked for a slice of the profits if the multimillion-dollar deal with a Chinese developer was finalised. Maguire was found guilty of the charge in June. The former Wagga Wagga MP resigned from the New South Wales Parliament in 2018 after Icac launched a separate investigation into his conduct while in office. The inquiry revealed he had been in a secret five-year 'close personal relationship' with ex-Premier Gladys Berejiklian. She resigned from her position in September 2021 after Icac announced it would investigate whether she breached the ministerial code of conduct. The commission found in July 2023 that both Maguire and Berejiklian engaged in serious corrupt conduct. More to come.
