Maghreb : The Polisario attends a congress held in Tunisia

An official Polisario delegation is currently in Tunisia attending a conference titled «Building Social Cohesion in a Changing World». Organized by the Catalan NGO NOVACT, the event includes the participation of a senior official from the Front's so-called «Ministry of Youth and Sports», according to the SPS news agency on Tuesday, April 22.
As with previous events organized by the same association—such as the Camp for Climate Justice forum held from September 26 to 30, 2022—the Tunisian authorities have once again allowed the Polisario's participation. This move further underscores the ongoing tensions between Rabat and Tunis, signaling that reconciliation remains elusive.
Relations between the two countries have significantly deteriorated since August 2022, when Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed gave a warm welcome to the Polisario leader during the Japan-Africa summit. The president has since moved away from the neutral stance of his predecessors on the Western Sahara issue, aligning more closely with Algeria's position. On August 25, 2024, President Saïed instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to make «the defense of the right of peoples to self-determination» a guiding principle of Tunisian diplomacy.

Spain Arrests Two Tindouf-Origin Sahrawis on Terrorism Charges

Rabat – Spanish police in the Basque Country arrested two young Sahrawis originally from the Tindouf camps on Wednesday in the Álava region. The individuals are facing charges of 'collaboration with jihadist organizations' and 'glorification of terrorism,' according to converging reports. Both suspects appeared on Friday before a judge at Spain's National Court in Madrid, which specializes in terrorism-related cases. Following the hearing, the magistrate ordered one of the suspects to remain in custody while releasing the second under judicial supervision with conditions. Notably, most Spanish media outlets reporting on the case—particularly those in the Basque region—did not mention the origins of the suspects. According to a Moroccan source cited by multiple converging reports, one of the arrested individuals is reportedly closely connected to Khatri Addouh, the Polisario Front's new ambassador to Algeria. The same source indicated that Polisario representatives in Spain have been pressuring media outlets not to reveal that the suspects are linked to the Tindouf camps. The arrest comes amid growing concerns over the possible radicalization within the camps. In recent months, various American think tanks and political figures have called for the U.S. government to designate the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization. Meanwhile, in Spain, a heated debate continues within the ruling coalition over a proposal to grant Spanish nationality to Sahrawis born during the Spanish colonial occupation of Western Sahara. Originally proposed by the far-left party Sumar—seen as a political move against the ruling Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE)—, the initiative has sparked division. PSOE has opposed recognizing identity documents issued by the Polisario and has resisted simplifying naturalization procedures for Sahrawis. Despite PSOE's opposition, the proposal was passed in parliament thanks to support from other parties, further fueling tensions within Spain's governing alliance. Polisario urges Mauritania to «work together against shared threats»

The leader of the Polisario Front has called on the Mauritanian president to «strengthen cooperation, consultation, and coordination to confront the risks and challenges facing our region». In a message of congratulations sent on the occasion of Eid al-Adha to Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, Brahim Ghali suggested that such cooperation could help «our two peoples, and the peoples of the region, live in peace, security, stability, and good neighborliness». Ghali also emphasized «the shared destiny that binds the Sahrawi people to their brothers in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania». Relations between the Polisario and Nouakchott have remained cold, if not outright frozen, largely due to the Mauritanian army's decision to close the Lebriga region, a corridor previously used by Polisario fighters to launch attacks against Morocco. Brahim Ghali is known for leveraging religious, national, and even partisan occasions to appeal to heads of state and prime ministers. Examples include his message to Keir Starmer following the British Labour Party's victory in the snap elections on July 4, 2024, and his letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin dated May 7.

Algeria Faces Major Setback as Ghana Reaffirms Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan

Rabat — In another diplomatic setback for Algeria, Ghana has once again reaffirmed its support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the only viable solution to the Western Sahara dispute. This comes just months after Algeria claimed that Ghana had reversed its stance on the issue — a claim that has now been officially dismissed. In a joint statement signed in Rabat by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, last Friday, Ghana recognized 'the exclusivity of the Autonomy Plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco in 2007 as the only realistic and sustainable basis for a mutually acceptable solution' to the regional dispute. This declaration reinforces Ghana's decision on January 7, 2025, to withdraw its recognition of the self-proclaimed 'SADR' (so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic). The move aligns Ghana with the growing international consensus in support of Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces. Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration confirmed that it had communicated this position to Morocco, the African Union, and the United Nations through official diplomatic channels. The ministry emphasized Ghana's backing for the 'good-faith efforts made by the Kingdom of Morocco to reach a solution accepted by all parties.' Ghana had originally recognized the Polisario-led 'SADR' in 1979 but has now decisively shifted its position in line with over 113 countries — more than 60% of UN member states — that support Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the most credible political framework to resolve the conflict. This reversal is part of a broader regional trend. Kenya, once considered a stronghold of pro-Polisario sentiment and a vocal ally of Algeria's stance on the Sahara, has also announced its support for Morocco's proposal. These developments signal a growing momentum in favor of Morocco's sovereignty , leaving Algeria's foreign policy increasingly isolated. Adding to Algeria's diplomatic frustrations, the United Kingdom — a permanent member of the UN Security Council — recently expressed its clear endorsement of Morocco's Autonomy Plan. The UK's support is more than symbolic; it adds significant international weight to Morocco's position. According to recent figures from Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over 113 countries around the world support the moroccan autonomy plan. On the other hand, 46 countries, including 13 African nations, have cut or frozen their ties with the Polisario since 2000. The increasing number of countries distancing themselves from the separatist group highlights the shifting dynamics on the global stage — where realism and pragmatism are replacing outdated allegiances.
