
We need Root and Branch Reforms in Governance, Teaching & Preaching to produce Selfless Mentors as Karma Yogi
Why do we work? We see that every being and the whole universe is continuously, incessantly 'working'. For what? Modern global society with all their pride in their sciences etc. have absolutely no clue on this fundamental question of why we work from birth to death!
While the West sought to 'Know Thyself' but never knew; the Vedic Rishis of ancient India discovered and boldly declared to the world, be a karma yogi to know thy own 'Self', the Consciousness that enlivens us and makes us conscious-living-beings. Our Rishis discovered the nature of our Inner instrument, our Mind, and how every 'work' can become our 'highest Worship'; and in recent times, it is Vivekananda, who has explained in simple words that selfless 'work' when does as 'worship of God in man' leads to our highest good. It is good to know that instructions have now been issued, that all government servants must be trained to be 'Karma Yogi'.
Making Right Choices is wisdom: Every moment two choices present themselves to us, we may choose either to Work only to earn and enjoy the short-term pleasures or strive to Work as Karma Yogi for our long-term good. Obviously, the latter are the Mentors of society committed to kartavya-plan and fit to be in academia and governance.
The purpose of Education, Parenting, Preaching, facilitated by Governance, must be to Teach, Preach, and Inspire us to learn how to choose the 'Long-term Good' over the 'Short-term Pleasant'. This ability to think, plan and act based on long-term good not just for 'me and mine' but for the whole society, must be practiced and developed.
So, the challenge is, how do we as Governance ensure that we educate, train and recruit those as Permanent Government servants who have developed the ability to know and choose the long-term good? And ensure that Preachers of all religions must teach us to be Karma Yogi and treat our duties as the highest religion.
Necessity of Inner Governance practices to 'Know Thyself': When we strive for the higher & better, all lower goals are also included. So, our ancient wisdom suggests, strive first to know the highest goal and purpose of work and life! When we strive to understand our real Self, we are led from a worldview of 'Separateness' to 'Oneness' and our focus of attention shifts from 'Objective to 'Subjective'.
The Big Question: It is obvious that the 'self-less', righteous, men of 'Wisdom', fit to be Mentors, will always be very few. In modern idea of Democratic governance and schooling that is limited merely to learning to earn a living, neither the Permanent Governance Bureaucracy nor the elected temporary Political leadership are accountable to be and make Mentors. And, surprisingly no one, not even Teachers, Professionals, Academia or even Preachers of Religions, are accountable or responsible to inspire and guide 'society as a whole' towards treating work and fulfilment of duties as the highest religion.
While Teachers teach, Preachers preach and democratic governance divides and rules, who is responsible and accountable today, to Mentor the 'Society as a whole' towards our 'long-term good universal Goals' and then inspiring us to learn to strive towards their attainment thru' Self-development practices?
We must not lose sight of our traditional ideas and ideal that the leaders at the top of the pyramid must be the few men of simple living and high thinking – we must be led by Mentors; by 'Quality of mind' not 'Quantity of power, money, number of votes'!
Questions for Reflection as Preachers, Parents, Teachers: Whatever the leaders do, that the people follow; we the educated and the teachers are the leaders of society today: Are we good role models? What is our role as Teachers?
Is it simply teaching of some subjects or is it building of Character? If it is both then which is of greater importance?
People tend to do what they are evaluated upon: So, how do we evaluate character? What syllabus and action plan are we following to build character?
What is our method to make the youth aware of and committed to the fundamental duties, to their duties to their family, organization, society?
What is our method to inculcate in the students the spirit of striving for quality and excellence? What is our method to develop in the youth spontaneous feelings of love, care and concern for others? How do we inspire the students to struggle against their lower tendencies?
How do we help develop strength and fearlessness in the students to walk the critical path to the higher and better; and unless we define the highest and best how can we determine the higher? How do we help students to develop their powers of discrimination, viveka'?
Education tips from ancient India: During the Round-Table Conference in the UK in 1931, Mahatma Gandhi, speaking to the Press, had said that when the British came to India, instead of building up on the existing systems, they uprooted the Beautiful Tree of Indian systems of education and health, Vidya and Vaidya, and allowed the roots to decay and die. These were offered by men of wisdom, Mentors, Karma Yogi, men of 'tyaga and seva', the twin ideals of India. The total commercialization of both education and health today shows the wisdom of the Mahatma.
Our challenge is to produce Teachers and select as Permanent govt. servants those who not only 'Teach, Preach, Govern' but can inspire and guide society towards becoming and making Mentors, Karma Yogi, striving to 'Know Thyself'.

Africa needs American generosity
President Trump has made clear that he will put the needs of his country and its citizens first before attending to the needs of the world. No leader of a nation as great as the U.S. could do otherwise. It would be a mistake, however, for Mr. Trump to forget about Africa. In purely material terms, Africa is important to the U.S. because of its natural resources and its bright, entrepreneurial and eager young people. But global leadership involves more than strategic utility—it has a vital humanitarian dimension. What happens in Africa affects the American people. Many parts of the continent are burdened with severe political and economic instability. Africa is now a magnet for conflicts and proxy fights over the natural resources so important to modern technology. Famine and poverty are also pervasive at levels unimaginable in the U.S. For decades, crises in Africa have been averted and lives saved because of the American people's generosity, delivered through the U.S. Agency for International Development. That aid has enhanced African society and, in the process, strengthened American economic influence in the region. We remain grateful for this. Africa is a culturally rich continent with deep economic and human ties to the U.S., and a great admiration for American freedoms. Our culture is imbued with love and respect for the family, the goodness of life and the hope for a better future, which our fertility rates reflect. We are a religious people, convicted in our love for and dependence on God; rich in history as well as natural resources; and sincere in our gratitude to our global friends, who support us in becoming more self-reliant. In short, the U.S. has transformed millions of lives for the better on my continent. Without U.S. support, even more internal conflicts would now be crippling Africa, leading to greater political instability and threatening the continent's economic development. The end of USAID support will have untold consequences for generations. The American people are right to be concerned about the proper use of their limited resources. Their critics are foolish and unjust when they ignore that fact. But targeted humanitarian aid for Africa is urgently needed, morally good and of great strategic value to the U.S. International politics won't tolerate a vacuum. Should the U.S. abandon Africa, its place will be taken by its adversaries: China, Russia, Iran, North Korea. This is already occurring in too many places, but it isn't too late to turn the tide, creating a situation in which Africa and the U.S. both win. It's unhelpful to tie aid to ideology—to abortion or 'population control"—that defies the values of many African cultures. I believe that respect for African culture can coexist with humanitarian aid. Cultural colonization needn't be the price exacted for a moral, strategic and humanitarian partnership. As a Catholic cardinal, I spend time with bishops, priests and ordinary families across Africa. I see their needs. I hear their hopes. On behalf of those people, I ask President Trump and his administration to reconsider aid to his friends in Africa, who have been and will continue to be important partners of the U.S. We are eager to work closely with Washington to ensure that all such aid is used well, free of the fraud and mismanagement that has occurred in the past. There is too much at stake—for Africans, for Americans and for the world. Belagavi Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama celebrates silver jubilee
Belagavi: An environment should be created in the country where followers of different religions can live in harmony. Vivekananda's thoughts are a model for a life of harmony, coexistence and peace. They are complementary to the progress of the country, said law and parliamentary affairs and tourism minister HK Patil while attending the silver jubilee celebration of Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama in Belagavi on Sunday. The site holds profound historical and spiritual importance as Swami Vivekananda stayed here for nine days during his visit to Belagavi in 1892. Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj, president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission Belur; Swami Atmaprananand of Ramakrishna Ashram, Belagavi; DR Patil, ex-MLA Gadag; and VV Bhaskar, former director general of police, Karnataka, participated. Inaugurating the event, Patil said Vivekananda's dream would come true only if God is recognised in the service to humanity. Untouchability, ignorance, and superstition should be eradicated in the country, and human service should flourish. Untouchability is still rampant in rural areas. "The feeling that we are all one has not yet come to all people. When that feeling comes, then we will have perfectly followed Vivekananda's message," he said. The state govt, adopting the visionary ideas of Vivekananda, is trying to bring even the most marginalised person of society into the mainstream. According to the United Nations standards, those who earn less than Rs 200 per day are poor. The state govt is providing an income guarantee of at least Rs 5,000 per month to every family, he said. Former MLA DR Patil said the activities of Ramakrishna Ashram are aimed at building a better society. Cooperation will be provided for all the activities of the ashram. Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj, president of the Ramakrishna Math, Belur, said the Ramakrishna Ashrama, Belagavi, has been a beacon of Vivekananda's ideals in North Karnataka. Recalling his days of association with the Ramakrishna Ashrama, former DIG VV Bhaskar expressed pride about the service of the Ashram. Dr Mallikarjun V Joli, the chief executive of KLE Cancer Hospital Belagavi, delivered the vote of thanks.

World Oceans Day: From Kerala's ravaged coast, a warning about the price of reckless development
In the middle of each year, the calendar of global conscience turns to World Oceans Day on June 8. This year's theme, 'Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us', hangs over Kerala's ravaged coastline like a cruel joke, as did the motif of World Environment Day on June 5 – 'End Plastic Pollution'. Even as diplomats in Nice and Seoul exchange platitudes about marine conservation, the sinking on May 25 of the MSC ELSA-3 – the container ship, which went down in stormy waters off Kerala's coast – has revealed what progress truly costs when measured in broken ecosystems and broken lives. The facts read like an indictment of our times. On May 24, the Liberian-flagged container ship departed the newly inaugurated Vizhinjam Port into the teeth of the southwest monsoon. Fishing boats had been ordered ashore – the sea was too dangerous for small craft. Yet the 300-metre behemoth, laden with containers (some with calcium carbide, others brimming with polyethylene pellets), received clearance to sail. Within hours, it listed violently. By dawn, the MSC ELSA-3 lay at the bottom of the Arabian Sea, just 38 nautical miles from the port that had so recklessly released it. This was no act of God, as insurers and corporations will soon claim. It was the inevitable result of systems that value cargo over communities, schedules over safety and rhetoric over responsibility. For years, Kerala's fisherfolk warned that Vizhinjam's breakwaters would accelerate coastal erosion. Oceanographers documented how the monsoon's fury made these waters a gamble for large vessels. Yet when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Adani-built port on May 2, he hailed it as India's 'maritime crown jewel' – a triumph of development over doubt. As Kerala's most ambitious port project nears its grand launch, Vizhinjam stands as a symbol of bold governance and strategic investment. Today, Kerala's beaches wear a new kind of tide line, one marked by plastic pellets, chemical foam and broken shipping containers. Fishing grounds lie fallow, not by choice but by contamination and government fiat to fishers not to fish. The Kerala government's response of 6 kg of rice and Rs 1,000 per month to the fishers is not relief. It is plain ridicule. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Shipping Company that owns the vessel hesitates to release the full cargo manifest, while the port authorities feign surprise at a disaster they enabled. The bitter irony? Many sponsors of this year's World Environment Day on June 5 were corporate giants producing and utilising the very plastics now choking Kerala's coast. The same shipping industry that treats vessels as disposable assets will doubtless help celebrate World Oceans Day. Such is the theatre of modern environmentalism – where polluters fund awareness campaigns as their toxins enter the food chain. True accountability would look different. It would mean: Until then, this annual observance will remain what it has always been – a greenwashed pantomime. The ocean does not need our performative 'day'. It needs us to confront the uncomfortable truth: development that destroys its protectors is not progress. It is piracy. Kerala's coast now serves as a warning written in water, one we ignore at our peril. For when we sacrifice the environment on the altar of growth, we do not just lose ecosystems. We lose our humanity. June 8 is World Oceans Day.
