World Oceans Day: From Kerala's ravaged coast, a warning about the price of reckless development

In the middle of each year, the calendar of global conscience turns to World Oceans Day on June 8. This year's theme, 'Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us', hangs over Kerala's ravaged coastline like a cruel joke, as did the motif of World Environment Day on June 5 – 'End Plastic Pollution'.
Even as diplomats in Nice and Seoul exchange platitudes about marine conservation, the sinking on May 25 of the MSC ELSA-3 – the container ship, which went down in stormy waters off Kerala's coast – has revealed what progress truly costs when measured in broken ecosystems and broken lives.
The facts read like an indictment of our times.
On May 24, the Liberian-flagged container ship departed the newly inaugurated Vizhinjam Port into the teeth of the southwest monsoon. Fishing boats had been ordered ashore – the sea was too dangerous for small craft. Yet the 300-metre behemoth, laden with containers (some with calcium carbide, others brimming with polyethylene pellets), received clearance to sail.
Within hours, it listed violently. By dawn, the MSC ELSA-3 lay at the bottom of the Arabian Sea, just 38 nautical miles from the port that had so recklessly released it.
This was no act of God, as insurers and corporations will soon claim. It was the inevitable result of systems that value cargo over communities, schedules over safety and rhetoric over responsibility.
For years, Kerala's fisherfolk warned that Vizhinjam's breakwaters would accelerate coastal erosion. Oceanographers documented how the monsoon's fury made these waters a gamble for large vessels.
Yet when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Adani-built port on May 2, he hailed it as India's 'maritime crown jewel' – a triumph of development over doubt.

The ocean answered three weeks later.
Today, Kerala's beaches wear a new kind of tide line, one marked by plastic pellets, chemical foam and broken shipping containers. Fishing grounds lie fallow, not by choice but by contamination and government fiat to fishers not to fish.
The Kerala government's response of 6 kg of rice and Rs 1,000 per month to the fishers is not relief. It is plain ridicule.
Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Shipping Company that owns the vessel hesitates to release the full cargo manifest, while the port authorities feign surprise at a disaster they enabled.
The bitter irony? Many sponsors of this year's World Environment Day on June 5 were corporate giants producing and utilising the very plastics now choking Kerala's coast. The same shipping industry that treats vessels as disposable assets will doubtless help celebrate World Oceans Day.
Such is the theatre of modern environmentalism – where polluters fund awareness campaigns as their toxins enter the food chain.
True accountability would look different. It would mean:
Until then, this annual observance will remain what it has always been – a greenwashed pantomime. The ocean does not need our performative 'day'. It needs us to confront the uncomfortable truth: development that destroys its protectors is not progress. It is piracy.
Kerala's coast now serves as a warning written in water, one we ignore at our peril. For when we sacrifice the environment on the altar of growth, we do not just lose ecosystems. We lose our humanity.
June 8 is World Oceans Day.

Highlighting the government's welfare agenda, he said both the Centre and the state are implementing several development and social security schemes aimed at uplifting the poor. He urged officials and employees to work with dedication to ensure that every eligible beneficiary, even in the remotest village, receives the benefits. Vijayanand also spoke about the Swarna Andhra P-4 Foundation launched to eradicate poverty and reduce economic inequalities, and called for committed efforts to make the programme a success. Principal secretary (GAD) Mukesh Kumar Meena, CSO Mallikarjuna, senior police officers, staff, and Secretariat employees attended the programme. As part of the celebrations, Vijayanand paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, unfurled the national flag, and later distributed sweets to children.

Visakhapatnam: The aim of the coalition government is to make women in the State financially independent and grow economically, said Revenue, Stamps and Registration Minister Anagani Satyaprasad. Speaking after the launch of the 'Stree Shakti' scheme that aims to provide free travel for women in RTC buses across the State at the Maddilapalem RTC depot, the minister said that despite the financial burden, Rs.1,942 crore was being spent on the scheme for its implementation. Through the scheme, 74 per cent of the RTC buses have been allotted for women to travel, he informed. Further, Satyaprasad mentioned that through the scheme, the financial burden of women belonging to poor and middle-class families will be reduced by Rs.2,000 to Rs.3,000 per month. He said that the coalition government is implementing schemes for women as promised. Speaking on the occasion, Visakhapatnam MP M Sribharat expressed hope that with the availability of free bus services, women will have an opportunity to come out of their homes and get jobs. RTC officials informed that 576 buses have been readied for free bus travel for women in Visakhapatnam Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao mentioned that the coalition government is successfully implementing the Super Six schemes. He said that the free bus facility will reduce the financial burden on women. Visakhapatnam North constituency MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju termed the scheme as an innovative scheme. He suggested that people should always remember the coalition government which is providing several facilities to women. South constituency MLA Ch Vamsi Krishna Srinivas said that the coalition government is fulfilling all the promises made to the people. District Collector MN Harendira Prasad and Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi said that the free bus ride is a silent revolution. Marking the occasion, zero fare tickets were handed over to women travelling in buses. Later, the minister travelled in a city bus till Yendada. He was accompanied by MLC Vepada Chiranjeevi Rao, TDP district president Gandi Babji, former MLC Duvvarapu Rama Rao, RTC Regional Manager Appalanaidu, and GVMC Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha flagged off the Stree Shakti scheme in Anakapalli. Speaking on the occasion, the Home Minister stressed that the scheme is beneficial for the women in terms of meeting education and job purposes. 'As part of the poll promises made, the NDA government is fulfilling all the promises made in a hassle-free manner. Also, for the safety and security of women passengers and women conductors, CCTV cameras have been installed in the buses,' the Home Minister mentioned, appealing to people to adhere to law and order maintenance, set goals and work towards achievingthem.

PM Narendra Modi NEW DELHI: Emphasising self-reliance as the bedrock of national strength, PM Modi on Friday announced a broad contour of initiatives that will focus on making India secure in different sectors including energy, semiconductor chip manufacturing, critical minerals, digital infrastructure, medicines and fertilisers. He shared that the first 'Made in India' semiconductor chips will come to the market by Dec. "The greater a nation's reliance on others, the more its freedom comes into question. Misfortune arises when depe-ndency becomes a habit, when we do not even realise when we abandon self-reliance and become dependent on others," said Modi, citing an example of a semiconductor idea that came to the table 60 years ago but was "stalled, delayed and shelved". "We lost 50-60 years. Many countries mastered semiconductors and establis-hed their strength," he said. Modi also announced the launch of National Deepwater Exploration Mission to look for oil and gas reserves in the sea and tap ocean resources. The efforts, termed 'Samudra Manthan' by the PM, will go on simultaneously with the push for non-fossil fuel energy. It will complement the Deep Ocean Mission, which involves development of submersibles and deep-sea mining technologies. Modi also announced that India's nuclear energy capacity would increase ten times by 2047. He said work was under way on 10 new reactors. He spoke about National Critical Mineral Mission that aims to secure resources essential for energy, industry, and defence. He stressed the urgent need to produce fertilisers to empower farmers and protect national food security. Highlighting India's strength as the "pharmacy of the world", Modi emphasised the need to invest in research and development. "Shouldn't we be the ones providing the best and most affordable medicines for the welfare of humanity?" he said.
