Shubman Gill is mix of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as captain, says Jos Buttler

The Hindu13 hours ago

India's new Test captain Shubman Gill is a mix of his predecessors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but he will be "very much his own man" in the middle when he leads the national side in the eagerly-awaited five-Test series against England starting on Friday (June 20, 2025), feels Jos Buttler.
Buttler, the former England limited-overs captain who played under Gill in this year's IPL, said the 25-year-old will need to find a balance between his captaincy role and his own batting.
"He's a really impressive player and an impressive young man," Buttler said on his podcast 'For The Love of Cricket' alongside former England pacer Stuart Broad.
"He's pretty calm and measured when he speaks, but (it's) interesting, I feel like on the field he's got a bit of fight about him; a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit.
"Kohli (was) that sort of real aggressive (character), really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit was a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight," he added.
Buttler expects Gill to "be a bit in the middle".
"He's obviously learned from those two guys… but he'll be very much his own man." Buttler said the job of captaining India in Test cricket is like being a "third or fourth-most influential people" in the country. "He talked about compartmentalising batting and captaining; so when he's batting he just wants to be a batter, and then he will try and work on his captaincy and try and separate the two roles," he said.
"I don't think we can quite understand the level of interest and the stardom that these guys have. You see it around the IPL, you're aware of it, but actually living that yourself... I think they say the Indian Test captain is like the third or fourth-most influential person in India, behind the Prime Minister, so you really are put up on that pedestal.
"(There are a) one-and-half billion people, all cricket-mad, so it's going to be a huge job for him. Kohli is the king, Shubman is the prince: that's the narrative that they spin out there, and I feel that he's the coming man...Stepping into that No. 4, it's big shoes, isn't it?"
"IPL teams as good as international teams"
Buttler said the level of competitiveness in IPL, given its unique window, makes some of the teams in the competition as good as international teams.
"I would say some teams would compete well, they are just as good as international teams. I think (a) Mumbai Indians XI had nine or 10 players who had played international cricket and they are just not any odd internationals either.
"Obviously, the window the IPL has, there is no competition from international cricket, it has got its own designated window. All the best players in the world are available, all the local Indian talent where the depth is just growing and growing and growing," he said.
"Suryavanshi's ton was inspiring and deflating"
Buttler said 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi's 38-ball 101 for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans, which was the second-fastest IPL ton and fastest for any Indian in T20 cricket, was both "inspiring and deflating".
"This guy is (about) 20 years younger than me, and he is just smashing us all around the park. Absolutely (sent) shockwaves throughout the cricket world," he said.
"...the first ball, he gave himself a bit of room and smacked it over wide long on for a six... that fearlessness. I love these guys out there; there are so many brilliant players. They almost want to make a statement as in 'look at me'." Buttler also recalled Suryavanshi's knock of 57 against Chennai Super Kings and said, "I'm like 'this guy is the best player I have ever seen," he said.

Jasprit Bumrah says he had ruled out India captaincy during IPL, informed BCCI before Rohit's retirement

Leeds: The peerless Jasprit Bumrah has revealed that he had ruled out Test captaincy during the IPL itself as part of his workload management , and had informed the BCCI of his desire to prioritise his bowling responsbilities over leadership duties. During an interaction with former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik on Sky Sports Cricket, Bumrah explained the thought process behind his decision to turn down the Indian Test captaincy. "There's no fancy stories to it. There is no controversy or a headlining statement that I was sacked. Before Rohit and Virat retired, I had spoken to the BCCI during the IPL about my workload going forward in a five-match series," Bumrah said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 3 minutes, if you own a mouse "I've spoken to the people who have managed my back, I've spoken to the surgeon as well, who's always spoken to me about how smart you have to be about the workloads. "And then we came to the conclusion that I have to be a little smarter. So then I called the BCCI and said I don't want to be looked at in a leadership role, because I won't be able to give all matches coming to a five-match Test series ," added Bumrah. Live Events After Rohit's retirement and with Bumrah ruling himself out, the BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as the skipper of the Test team with his first assignment being the five-match Test series against England, beginning in Leeds on Friday. During the interaction, Bumrah stressed on the need for continuity in leadership, particularly in a long series, something he would not be able to offer because of his heavy workload as the team's premier bowler. "The BCCI was looking at me at (a) leadership (role). But then I had to say no as it's not fair for the team as well. It's not fair to the team if in a five-Test series, three matches somebody else is leading and two matches somebody else is leading. "I always wanted to put the team first, even if me being there as a player offers a lot more just not as a captain," Bumrah said. "Captaincy is a position. But you always have leaders in the team and I wanted to do. Obviously, if I'm not careful, I don't know about the future, and I don't want to be in a situation where I have to abruptly go away from this format. "So, I thought that for continuity, and it is only fair to the team that you know the team goes in that direction, where they look at long-term and I could help in whatever way," he added. Bumrah acknowledged that leading the Indian Test team is a huge honour but added that he loves the game more than captaincy. "Captaincy meant a lot. I had worked very hard for it. But, unfortunately, sometimes you have to look after the bigger picture. I love cricket more than captaincy so I want to contribute more as a cricketer and to the Indian team as a player. "Obviously ambitions are there but that's how it is and I called the BCCI and said that I don't want to be looked at in a leadership role," said the magnificent fast bowler. Plan to play three Tests in England As far as his participation in the England series in concerned, Bumrah is planning to play in at least three Test matches, including the opener at Headingley. "Obviously, the number is not decided. First (Test) is definitely on, that is going to happen. Rest, we will see how things are, what is the workload and scenario... but yes, 3 Tests is what I can manage at the moment." India head coach Gautam Gambhir had also said Bumrah could play three Tests in the coming weeks.

Indian Archery League Set To Launch In October 2025; AAI Hires Lee As India Coach

Last Updated: The Indian Archery League, with six city teams, starts in October at New Delhi's Yamuna Sports Complex. Delayed since 2020, it has sponsorship and is in talks with broadcasters. The highly anticipated franchise-based 'Indian Archery League' is finally set to commence in October at the Yamuna Sports Complex in New Delhi, featuring six city-based teams, as confirmed by Archery Association of India (AAI) treasurer Joris Paulose Ummacheril on Tuesday. Initially conceptualised in 2020, the league faced delays due to a lack of sponsors. However, the AAI has now secured sponsorship and is in discussions with broadcasters, including Sony Sports and JioHotstar, to launch the league this year. This will be the world's first franchise league in archery, and the federation is hopeful of a strong response that will significantly aid in the development of Indian archers, who are yet to win an Olympic medal. 'Everything will be finalised by the end of this month, and we are hopeful of launching the league in October. We are calling it the Indian Archery League, but the name is not yet finalised," Joris told PTI. Three teams from Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru have already been confirmed, with the remaining franchises to be decided soon. Each franchise will represent a city, depending on ownership and league plans. Each team will consist of eight archers, with four in recurve and four in compound, including two men and two women in each category. It will be mandatory for each team to include two overseas archers. 'We've seen how the IPL has revolutionised Indian cricket, and we are confident this league will do something similar for archery," another AAI official said. As reported by PTI last week, Lee's appointment has now been formally approved, and the contract, running until the LA Games, has been sent to him for signature. 'The Sports Authority of India has accepted all his terms and conditions after the final round of interviews. He is expected to sign the contract in the next couple of days," Joris confirmed. Lee is expected to join the Indian team after the World Championship in September and before the inaugural Archery League. Aged 67, Lee has an impressive coaching legacy, having guided archers to over 300 World Cup medals, including more than 150 gold, and three Olympic podium finishes during his tenure with the USA from 2006 to 2024. He also coached Australia's Simon Fairweather to gold at Sydney 2000 and Tim Cuddihy to bronze at Athens 2004. His most decorated protégé is Brady Ellison, a five-time Olympic medallist, widely regarded as one of the sport's greatest names, thanks in large part to Lee's structured training programmes and innovative techniques. 'Initially, we wanted to offer him a contract until the 2032 Olympics, but considering his age, we'll review things after Los Angeles," Joris added. Lee is expected to work across both the elite and junior recurve programmes, further strengthening India's Olympic prospects. Rahul Banerjee likely to travel as women's coach Former Olympian and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Rahul Banerjee, currently the personal coach of Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das, is likely to travel with the Indian team for the World Cup Stage 4 in Madrid (July 8–13) and the World Championships in Gwangju (September 5–12). If confirmed, Banerjee will replace long-serving women's coach Poornima Mahato. 'As per the current policy, the coach of the top-ranked Indian archer travels with the team. Deepika topped the qualification round, so Banerjee is tipped to go," Joris said. (with agency inputs)
