One UI 8 Watch leak reveals how Gemini will work on Wear OS (APK teardown)

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority
TL;DR We've found more details about Gemini on Wear OS thanks to leaked One UI 8 Watch APKs.
It looks like Wear OS will support 'Gemini Actions,' allowing the AI assistant to perform actions across different apps.
Our teardown also shows that Gemini on Wear OS will be able to summarize emails, make calendar changes, and more.
We recently heard that Samsung could skip One UI 7 Watch and go straight to One UI 8 Watch. Now, APKs for One UI 8 Watch have leaked, courtesy of X user IposDev. We took those APKs and started digging around, leading us to some pretty interesting information. We now have more details about how Gemini could work, not just on Samsung's Galaxy Watches but also on other Wear OS smartwatches.
While Google has already confirmed that Gemini is coming to Wear OS watches, our teardown of the Google Assistant app (Wear OS version) from the leaked One UI 8 Watch APKs gives us the clearest look yet at what the AI upgrade will actually bring to your wrist.

An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
Buried within the code are references to 'Gemini Actions,' suggesting that Wear OS users may soon enjoy the same app-linking and task automation capabilities that Gemini already supports on Android phones.
Other strings from our teardown hint at specific use cases that point to Gemini's ability to manage calendar events, summarize emails, and answer general queries on Wear OS. If this functionality ships as described, Wear OS watches may soon become much more useful for productivity and day-to-day task management.
Another notable string suggests Google is also thinking about ease of usability. The string likely refers to a prompt that allows users to mute Gemini's voice output with a quick tap, which would come in handy in public or during workouts.
Code Copy Text Add a Gemini action Move my next meeting 30min later Summarize my last email What's the weather in London? Tap screen to mute
Given that the leaked APK is tied to the One UI 8 Watch update, Samsung could be gearing up to ship Gemini on Galaxy Watches alongside (or possibly even ahead of) the wider Wear OS ecosystem. Samsung has been a close partner with Google on Wear OS since the platform's reboot, and it wouldn't be surprising if Galaxy Watches become the first to showcase these new Gemini features.
Google is expected to discuss more about Gemini at I/O 2025, and with the One UI 8 Watch beta reportedly around the corner, Samsung users may get early access to Gemini on wearables. As always with APK teardowns, some features may not make the cut, but there's plenty here to get excited about.

AMD takes aim at Nvidia's AI hardware dominance with Brium acquisition

AMD's latest acquisition could help reduce Nvidia's market dominance when it comes to AI hardware. Semiconductor giant AMD on Wednesday announced it acquired AI software optimization startup Brium. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Brium is a startup that appears to be in stealth mode. The startup builds machine learning applications to enable AI inference, the process a trained AI model uses to draw conclusions from new data, across a variety of different hardware options, according to a blog post on Brium's bare-bones website. Cutting through that jargon a bit, Brium can help retrofit AI software to work with different AI hardware than it might have been designed for originally. In a press release, AMD said its acquisition of Brium will help its commitment to 'building a high-performance, open AI software ecosystem that empowers developers and drives innovation.' While AMD is saying that this acquisition helps create a more open AI ecosystem, which isn't wrong, it seems clear that it's also meant to help AMD overcome one of its biggest roadblocks: a large percentage of AI software is being designed for Nvidia hardware and chips. Brium's sole blog post, which came out in November 2024, talked about the industry's reliance on Nvidia and called out AMD specifically. Berkeley, CA | REGISTER NOW 'In recent years, the hardware industry has made strides towards providing viable alternatives to Nvidia hardware for server-side inference,' the blog post reads. 'Solutions such as AMD's Instinct GPUs offer strong performance characteristics, but it remains a challenge to harness that performance in practice as workloads are typically tuned extensively with Nvidia GPUs in mind. At Brium, we intend to enable efficient [model] inference across a range of hardware architectures.' This is AMD's fourth strategic acquisition in the past two years toward the company's goal of fostering an open-source AI ecosystem, according to the press release. The company previously acquired Silo AI (in July 2024), (October 2023), and Mipsology (August 2023). TechCrunch has reached out to AMD for more information.

AI-driven search ad spending set to surge to $26 billion by 2029, data shows

By Jaspreet Singh (Reuters) -Spending on AI-powered search advertising is poised to surge to nearly $26 billion by 2029 from just over $1 billion this year in the U.S., driven by rapid adoption of the technology and more sophisticated user targeting, data from Emarketer showed on Wednesday. Companies that rely on traditional keyword-based search ads could experience revenue declines due to the growing popularity of AI search ads, which offer greater convenience and engagement for users, according to the research firm. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Search giants such as Alphabet-owned Google and Microsoft's Bing have added AI capabilities to better compete with chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Perplexity AI, which provide users with direct information without requiring to click through multiple results. Apple is exploring the integration of AI-driven search capabilities into its Safari browser, potentially moving away from its longstanding partnership with Google. The report has come as concerns grew about users increasingly turning to the chatbots for conversational search and AI-powered search results could upend business models of some companies. Online education firm Chegg said in May that it would lay off about 248 employees as it looks to cut costs and streamline operations because students are using AI-powered tools including ChatGPT over traditional edtech platforms. QUOTE "Publishers and other sites are feeling the pain from AI search. As they lose out on traffic, we're seeing publishers lean into subscriptions and paid AI licensing deals to bolster revenue," Emarketer analyst Minda Smiley said. GRAPHIC CONTEXT AI search ad spending is expected to constitute nearly 1% of total search ad spending this year and 13.6% by 2029 in the U.S., according to Emarketer. Sectors such as financial services, technology, telecom, and healthcare are embracing AI as they are seeing clear advantages in using the technology to enhance their ad strategies, while the retail industry's adoption is slow, the report said. Google recently announced the expansion of its AI-powered search capabilities into the consumer packaged goods sector through enhancements in Google Shopping.
