Foxconn shifts focus away from Apple as AI servers drive growth in Taiwan tech sector

Taiwan's
Foxconn , which rose to become a global tech manufacturing juggernaut by assembling millions of iPhones, can now say its main business is no longer
Apple as it takes advantage of the artificial intelligence boom to diversify its income.

Its revenue from making AI servers and other cloud and networking products, including for major customer
Nvidia , surpassed smart consumer products such as iPhones for the first time in the second quarter, marking the culmination of a shift that began years ago and has swept through Taiwan's tech industry.
Foxconn's heavy reliance on the smartphone business had long been viewed by investors as a significant risk, as demand growth for new iPhones had gradually weakened since they were first introduced nearly two decades ago, leaving the top iPhone assembler grappling with slowing sales momentum, analysts said.
Wary of the risk, Foxconn chairman Young Liu has been championing new businesses such as
AI servers,
electric vehicles (EVs) and
semiconductors since taking the top job in 2019.

While its expansion into EVs and chips has yet to show a meaningful contribution to its top-line, Foxconn's success in AI server manufacturing – the company is Nvidia's biggest server maker – is the result of its early bets before the technology was thrust into the limelight with the advent of ChatGPT in late 2022.

Wellcome, 7-Eleven operator DFI cuts staff amid Hong Kong retail malaise

DFI Retail Group is set to lay off staff, as the operator of Wellcome, Mannings and 7-Eleven adapts to shifting consumer trends in the city. An email sent to employees by Scott Price, CEO of Hong Kong's largest retail group, and seen by the Post said the company would embark on a series of actions to simplify operations to meet customer expectations of lower prices. It was unclear how many staff would be let go. DFI, formerly known as Dairy Farm, did not immediately reply to a request for a comment. In the first six months of the year, DFI reported that it swung to a loss of US$38 million from a profit of US$95 million a year earlier. Hong Kong's retail sales contracted for 14 consecutive months until May, when they rose by 2.4 per cent. In June, retail sales improved by 0.7 per cent from a year earlier. 'The reality is that, over the past five years, our support function costs have increased significantly,' Price said. 'This has added unnecessary complexity, slowed down decision-making, and driven costs into our products that ultimately raise prices for customers. 'That is not sustainable. And it is not aligned with the business we want to be.' Initiatives the group would undertake included 'reshaping support functions', 'clarifying roles' and 'offshoring and outsourcing selected roles', Price said.

Tech war: Huawei reveals Kirin chip inside 5G smartphones as firm overcomes US sanctions

The name of Huawei's chipset, which was designed by semiconductor design subsidiary HiSilicon , was found prominently displayed in screenshots shared online by Pura 80 users after a system update of the handset. Information about the processors used by Huawei on 5G smartphones, including the Mate 60 Pro and Mate 70 series , was previously uncovered only via third-party teardown analyses, without any official confirmation from the Shenzhen -based company. Privately held Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. The Kirin 9020, first seen in Huawei's Mate 70 smartphones last year, was made by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) using the advanced 7-nanometre production process, according to a report by Canadian research firm TechInsights published in December.

Is India's easing of rupee trade rules a response to US tariff threats?

India 's central bank has eased rules for settling international trade in rupees, a move analysts say could bolster the currency's global profile and reduce the country's dependence on the US dollar as trade tensions with Washington escalate. Advertisement Though New Delhi has distanced itself from global de-dollarisation drives, observer say the shift reflects a pragmatic push to insulate India from dollar volatility and future geopolitical risks. Earlier this month, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said the country's banks would no longer need prior approval from the central bank before allowing the opening of special Rupee Vostro Accounts, easing the process for cross-border payments in the local currency. The move came amid the backdrop of Washington imposing import tariffs of 50 per cent on India, even as nations like Brazil called for a Brics trade currency as a dollar alternative. US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose higher tariffs on Brics – an association of 10 major emerging economies including India – if the bloc tries to weaken the dollar's global reserve currency status. 02:12 Trump to impose 25% tariff on India from August 1, plus 'penalty' for Russia ties Trump to impose 25% tariff on India from August 1, plus 'penalty' for Russia ties India has previously said it neither supports moves for a single Brics currency, nor any efforts aimed at undermining the use of the US dollar.
