
Mercedes-Benz welcomes EU-US deal after profits plunge on tariff woes
"I have respect for what the EU commission and (trade commissioner) Maros Sefcovic and co have worked up in the past few months", chief executive Ola Kaellenius told reporters on a call. "It will help us rather than damage us".
US President Donald Trump and EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen announced a deal Sunday taking the US tariff on imported cars to 15 percent, down from 27.5 percent.
But critics in Europe including France's Prime Minister Francois Bayrou have castigated the deal as one-sided since it foresees no baseline tariff on US goods entering the EU.
"Zero is not a gift to the Americans in this context," Kaellenius said, since German carmakers were "the biggest exporters" into the EU from the United States.
About two-thirds of the vehicles which Mercedes-Benz makes at its Tuscaloosa plant in the United States were exported out of the country, Kaellenius said, adding that Mercedes-Benz was looking to ramp up production in places where it made most economic sense.
"That is not new, not just because of these tariffs," he said. "It is best not to react hastily but to really think hard about what our footprint should be over the next five to ten years."
PROFIT PLUNGE
Reporting second-quarter results, Mercedes-Benz said the tariffs introduced by Trump had cost the firm hundreds of millions of euros.
Without tariffs the firm's car business would have achieved a profit margin of 6.6 percent compared to an actual 5.1 percent, Mercedes-Benz said, on overall sales of 24.2 billion euros at the cars division for the quarter.
Overall net profit plunged nearly 70 percent to 957 million euros ($1.1 billion), hit by the tariffs as well as weak sales in China, prompting Mercedes-Benz to lower its full-year revenue outlook.
The firm now forecasts groupwide revenue to be "significantly below" the 146 billion euros it took in last year.
Back in February it expected 2025 revenue to be "slightly below" the 2024 level.
Trump in April slapped an additional 25-percent levy on imported cars as part of an aggressive trade policy he says will help boost US manufacturing.
That hit European carmakers, with Jeep- and Citroen-owner Stellantis as well as auto giant Volkswagen all reporting slumping North American sales at recent results.
Mercedes-Benz's own sales by volume fell 12 percent in the United States over the period.
In China they tumbled 19 percent, underlining the challenge the company faces against local competitors such as BYD.
Along with other carmakers, Mercedes-Benz then withdrew its guidance in April whilst it digested the impact of Trump's tariff blitz.
At its key cars division Mercedes-Benz said that it now forecasts a profit margin of between 4 and 6 percent, including the effects of tariffs.
Excluding tariffs it expects a profit margin of between 6 and 8 percent.

Norris fastest in second Hungarian GP practice, Piastri second
Lando Norris completed a Hungarian Grand Prix practice double on Friday as runaway leaders McLaren dominated both sessions while leaving something in reserve and almost colliding at the end. Norris was top of the time sheets in both sessions at the Hungaroring outside Budapest, with Formula One leader Oscar Piastri second and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc emerging as McLaren's closest rival. The Briton was 0.019 of a second faster than teammate Piastri, who has a 16-point lead after 13 of 24 races, in first practice and 0.291 quicker in the late afternoon when he set a best lap of 1:15.624 seconds. At the end of the session, with the chequered flag already waved, Norris locked up coming out of the pits for a practice start as Piastri, winner in Belgium last weekend, went around the outside at turn one. Norris was on pole at the circuit last year in a race won by Piastri, his first victory in F1. Leclerc was third fastest in both sessions, with Racing Bulls' French rookie Isack Hadjar fourth in the opening one but Aston Martin coming on strong in the second with Lance Stroll fourth and Fernando Alonso fifth. Double world champion Alonso had missed practice one due to back pain, with Brazilian reserve Felipe Drugovich standing in for him. Lewis Hamilton, winner a record eight times in Hungary with McLaren and Mercedes, was fifth and sixth on his return with Ferrari. Mercedes's form looked more encouraging than at the last race in Belgium, with George Russell ending the day seventh, after earlier complaining about his car's balance, and Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli 10th. Estonian Paul Aron took Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber for the opening session and was last after having to stop before the midpoint of the session due to a technical problem. Hulkenberg was 12th on his return.

Ramaphosa says talks with US on tariffs ongoing as measures are delayed for seven days
President Cyril @CyrilRamaphosa/X President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed concern over the 30% tariff imposed by the US on South African exports, despite a seven-day reprieve from implementation of the measure which had been set to kick in on Friday. South Africa is among several countries facing punitive tariffs from the US as it moves to protect its own manufacturers and labour force. On Friday, Ramaphosa said his government was finalising a package to support companies that are vulnerable to the reciprocal tariffs, adding that the details would be announced 'in due course'. He said Pretoria had submitted a framework deal to Washington in an effort to strengthen 'mutually beneficial trade and investment ties'. 'South Africa and US trade relations are complementary in nature and South African exports do not pose a threat to US industry. Importantly, SA exports to the US contain inputs from the African continent and contribute to intra-Africa trade,' he said. Ramaphosa said his government would pursue all diplomatic avenues to safeguard the country's national interests. 'It is important that, as a country, we keep our people at work and our companies producing some of the high-quality products destined for many parts of the world.' Trump's administration claims that a lack of reciprocity in trade relations has eroded the US's manufacturing base, disrupted supply chains and weakened its defence industrial base. Earlier this week, Department of Trade, Industry and Competition said South Africa It has set up an export support desk as part of a diversification strategy 'to create resilience' in the economy. The desk is collaborating with export councils, industry associations and major exporters to the US to assist in accessing alternative markets. 'We also want to reiterate that we have no intention of decoupling from the United States either. Our view is that negotiations remain the best tool to deal with the issues that are on the table,' it said.
