I Didn't Expect to Be Into J.Lo's New Movie—But The Trailer Changed My Mind
The trailer for Kiss of the Spider Woman just dropped—and yes, you're going to want to see it. But first, a little backstory. In this new film adaptation, Kiss of the Spider Woman centers on Valentín (played by Diego Luna), a political prisoner who ends up sharing a cell with Molina (Tonatiuh), a window dresser imprisoned for public indecency. As they spend time together behind bars, Molina captivates Valentín with the retelling of a lavish old Hollywood musical starring his favorite screen siren, Ingrid Luna—played by Jennifer Lopez. Now back to the trailer, it's really good. is seen sporting blonde locs as she sings and dances her way through dreamy musical numbers. As someone who walked into this trailer knowing nothing about the story, I can confidently say this is going on my watchlist. And given that musical films aren't usually my go-to (Wicked being the exception), I was genuinely surprised by how into it I was. This one feels right on key. And I'm not alone. Fans in the comments are already hyping the film up, with some even calling it Academy Award-worthy. 'Looks absolutely PHENOMENAL Expect this to rule the Oscars,' one user wrote. Another added, 'Awards contender on the horizon,' while a third chimed in, 'Oscar nomination for 2026.' The musical version of Kiss of the Spider Woman made its Broadway debut in March 1993. It became a critical success, earning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and a win for Chita Rivera, who originated the iconic title role. The first film adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman hit theaters in 1985. Now, the story is being reimagined by director Bill Condon—best known for Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast—with Lopez taking on her first-ever movie musical role. She's also behind the scenes as a co-producer, teaming up with her former husband Ben Affleck and his production partner Matt Damon under their Artists Equity banner. Kiss of the Spider Woman hits theaters on October 10. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Click here. Broadway Week: Full List of Shows In September 2-for-1 Ticket Offer
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Theatergoers will be able to score 2-for-1 tickets for 24 different Broadway shows from September 8 and September 21. The deals are available twice a year in an attempt to make Broadway more accessible, regardless of income. "By running this event twice a year, Broadway fosters community engagement and ensures the arts remain within reach, even in an inflationary environment," a financial expert told Newsweek. Why It Matters Broadway Week's 2-for-1 tickets have been available for limited times since 2011. Since the average cost of a Broadway show ticket ranges from $100 to $150, the 2-for-1 deal can significantly lower the cost burden for those who might not attend a Broadway show otherwise. Broadway theaters stand closed along an empty street in the theater district on June 30, 2020, in New York City. Broadway theaters stand closed along an empty street in the theater district on June 30, 2020, in New York To Know There are 24 shows included in the 2-for-1 Broadway week deal. This includes: & Juliet Aladdin The Book of Mormon Buena Vista Social Club Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club Chicago Death Becomes Her The Great Gatsby Hadestown Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Hell's Kitchen Jeff Ross: Take a Banana for the Ride The Lion King Mamma Mia! Maybe Happy Ending Moulin Rouge! The Musical MJ The Musical Oh, Mary! Operation Mincemeat The Outsiders Punch Six The Musical Stranger Things: The First Shadow Wicked Six of those productions, Buena Vista Social Club, Jeff Ross: Take a Banana for the Ride, Mamma Mia!, Operation Mincemeat, The Outsiders, Punch, and Stranger Things: The First Shadow, will be included in Broadway Week's special deal for the first time. "From groundbreaking musicals to timeless classics, Broadway is the heartbeat of New York City, and with NYC Broadway Week, we are, once again, making sure that more New Yorkers and visitors can enjoy the magic of the stage," New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement. Broadway has regained momentum in recent years following the coronavirus pandemic, with attendance now exceeding pre-pandemic levels, said Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast. "The deal not only fuels excitement but also gives more people access to classic shows and new productions," Thompson said. What People Are Saying Julie Coker, President and CEO of New York City Tourism + Conventions told ABC 7: "NYC Broadway Week is a celebrated tradition in our city, providing visitors with access to world-class productions found nowhere else in the world. Since its inception in 2011, the program has provided significant support to New York City's dynamic Broadway theater industry, generating over $196 million in revenue." Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast, told Newsweek: "At a time when the cost of living is high, this initiative makes theater more accessible for audiences who may not otherwise afford it. By running this event twice a year, Broadway fosters community engagement and ensures the arts remain within reach, even in an inflationary environment." Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek: "This deal has been offered in regular intervals in order to attract more fans to come see shows and has been largely successful. Long before current inflationary problems, theater tickets had been creeping up for years in pricing, as the cost of running a show skyrocketed." What Happens Next With the deal going live for shows next month, many viewers will be able to introduce new patrons of the arts into the Broadway scene, Beene said. "It's hard to develop long-term fans when the minimum price to entry is so high," Beene said. "Offering 2-for-1 ticketing deals gives current fans a means for inviting someone new to the Broadway scene for free and hopefully creating a future patron from them. It's a savvy business tactic."
