Toyota Drops BMW For Next-Gen Supra, Global Debut In 2027
Toyota is all set to roll out the sixth-generation Supra in 2027. But this time, the iconic sports car will be developed entirely in-house, unlike the current A90 model which was created in partnership with BMW, as per Best Car.
The A90 Supra, which hit markets in 2019, borrowed its engine and platform from BMW's Z4. However, it proved to be a bigger hit than its German cousin. Reports say Toyota sold over 24,000 units in five years – nearly double that of the Z4.
What's Under the Bonnet?
The upcoming Supra is expected to feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid engine, built in-house by Toyota. With nearly 400 BHP and 500 Nm of torque, it promises an exciting mix of power and performance.
Toyota is also planning to make this Supra more eco-friendly. Along with petrol, the engine might support carbon-neutral fuels. The hybrid setup will include a motor generator and a clutch, allowing the car to run solely on electric power when needed.
Gearbox options haven't been confirmed yet, but Toyota could offer either a 10-speed or an 8-speed automatic transmission.
What Else is Toyota Planning?
Why Does It Matter?
When Akio Toyoda boldly said, 'Supra is back" in 2019, it was more than just a car launch. It marked the return of one of Toyota's most beloved sports cars after 17 years. With this new version, Toyota is ready to reclaim the Supra's legendary status – this time, on its own terms.

Trump Signs Executive Order Imposing 50% Tariff On Brazil, Cites Threat To National Security
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing a 50 per cent tariff on Brazil. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order imposing a 50 percent tariff on Brazil, the White House stated. According to a fact sheet of the order released by the White House, the decision was made based on the recent policies, actions, and practices by the Brazilian government that, according to the US, showed an exceptional and significant threat to its national security, foreign relations, and economic interests. 'President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order implementing an additional 40 percent tariff on Brazil, bringing the total tariff amount to 50 percent, to deal with recent policies, practices, and actions by the Government of Brazil that constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States," the statement read. As per the order, the Brazilian government's policies and actions had negatively impacted US businesses. The Brazilian policies have also undermined the free speech rights of US citizens, threatening US foreign policy and economic interests. The White House further termed the Brazilian government's legal actions against its former President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters as human rights violations that have weakened the rule of law in the South American country. Earlier in the month, Trump threatened a 50 per cent tariff on imports from Brazil, starting August 1 and called for the end of the trial for the far-right leader Bolsonaro, who had bragged about his closeness to Trump, calling the trial a 'witch hunt". Meanwhile, the announcement of the increased tariff rate came on the same day the US imposed sanctions on Brazilian Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The US had also earlier announced visa restrictions against Moraes and other court officials involved in Bolsonaro's trial. US Sanctions At Least Six Indian Firms For Purchasing And Marketing Iranian Oil
The Indian firms are among a broader list that includes businesses operating across the petroleum supply chain, including brokers, shipping companies The United States has sanctioned at least six Indian companies for allegedly engaging in the trade of Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products, as part of a sweeping action against 20 global entities. The move is part of Washington's ongoing effort to tighten economic pressure on Tehran. The US Department of State announced the sanctions on Wednesday, alleging that the Indian companies knowingly conducted 'significant transactions" involving the purchase and marketing of Iranian petroleum products—actions deemed to be in violation of US sanctions on Iran. In a statement issued by the State Department, the US said the Iranian regime 'continues to fuel conflict in the Middle East to fund its destabilizing activities." It added, 'Today, the United States is taking action to stem the flow of revenue that the regime uses to support terrorism abroad, as well as to oppress its own people." The 20 targeted entities, along with 10 vessels identified as blocked property, are being sanctioned under Executive Order 13846. The order reimposes a range of sanctions against Iran in connection with its energy sector, following the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement. The Indian companies named in the sanctions include Kanchan Polymers, Alchemical Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Ramniklal S. Gosalia and Company, Jupiter Dye Chem Pvt. Ltd., Global Industrial Chemicals Ltd., and Persistent Petrochem Pvt. Ltd. The Indian firms are among a broader list that includes businesses operating across the petroleum supply chain, including brokers, shipping companies, and intermediaries accused of facilitating Iranian oil sales. view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 07:47 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
