Currie to join exclusive Warrington Wolves club as he hits milestone

Yahoo17-05-2025
TOMORROW looks set to be a landmark day in the career of Ben Currie.
The forward, who is currently captaining Warrington Wolves in the absence of regular skipper George Williams, is set to join an exclusive list by making his 300th appearance for the club.
The Challenge Cup semi-final victory over Leigh Leopards saw him make appearance number 299 in Wire colours, so he would hit the magic number if – as expected – he leads the side out at Wakefield Trinity on Sunday.
Whenever he next plays, he will become just the 33rd player in club history to play 300 games for the club.
Having progressed through the club's academy, Currie made his first-team debut against Widnes Vikings in April 2012 and has established himself as a key man over time either side of suffering a brace of ACL injuries, first in 2016 and then again in 2018.
While the bulk of his career has come in the second row, current head coach Sam Burgess' decision to move him to loose forward has rejuvenated the England international although his versatility has come in handy.
As well as brief stints back in the second row, Currie has also turned out in the halves and the centres of late and even did a short stint on the wing during the recent Challenge Cup victory over Widnes.
Currie's 299 appearances have yielded 97 tries, making him the third in the highest-scoring Wire forward of all time in terms of tries behind Bob Eccles (119) and Ben Westwood (98). Westwood scored 128 tries for Warrington, but 30 of those came as an outside-back before his move into the pack.
And he's not the only Wire player in sight of a record, with Stefan Ratchford and Marc Sneyd also closing in.
With 1,020 Super League goals to his name, Sneyd needs just six more to draw level with Andy Farrell in fourth place in the competition's all-time list.
Paul Deacon (1,043) and Danny Brough (1,084) are also in sight of the scrum-half although all-time leader Kevin Sinfield is far clear on 1,566.
In terms of Super League points in total, Sneyd is currently in seventh place on 2,244 and needs 18 more to overhaul Danny Tickle in sixth spot.
He could soon be joined in the top 10 by Ratchford, who is level with Iestyn Harris on 1,674 points so needs just one more to move into standalone 10th spot.

Liverpool to submit new offer for star 'very keen' to join

Time is running out in the transfer window and Liverpool are still in the race to complete multiple deals. It's been a long summer, and the next two weeks are going to be even crazier than anything that has happened in the lead up to this. 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! LFC x adidas Shop the goalkeeper range today LFC x adidas Shop the new adidas range today! Liverpool are far from being done in the transfer market. Richard Hughes wanted to rebuild Arne Slot's side this summer and the final pieces in the jigsaw are still yet to be secured. The first of those jigsaw pieces is Alexander Isak. He's been Liverpool's dream target for a long time and next week we should find a resolution to the saga that has been going on for the longest time. Liverpool may add another winger to the equation as well. Although it remains to be seen whether with such little time left they can find the right target. But the other key piece of the puzzle is Marc Guehi. 🔴 Like Isak, the Crystal Palace captain has long been on Liverpool's radar. In fact, the Reds have wanted to sign him since the beginning of the summer. Guehi has one year left on his contract and it's clear that he doesn't want to extend. He wants to leave the club. Whether it's in the next two weeks or next summer, the end result will be the same. So, it's in Palace's interest to make sure that he goes this summer. At least this way they won't lose him for nothing but they can actually get compensated for making Guehi into the player he is today. Liverpool have been working on a deal to do exactly that. They haven't yet succeeded but it looks like they are going to make another push for the Crystal Palace star.

Update On Tottenham Hotspur In Their Pursuit Of This Crystal Palace Ace: Should Frank Snap Him Up?

In a recent post on X, journalist Ben Jacobs offered an update on Tottenham Hotspur and their pursuit of Crystal Palace ace Eberechi Eze. It has been stated that Spurs are willing to offer around £55m-£60m to acquire the services of the English talent this summer. Eze's Impressive Record In English Football Last Season Eze was a top performer for the Eagles in the previous campaign when he produced a string of productive performances for them in the Premier League. The English talent participated in 43 matches for the London outfit last season, netting 14 goals and grabbing 11 assists in all competitions. The 27-year-old managed to prove his worth in the final third by averaging 3.48 shots per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He kept 27% of his shots on target. Eze even distributed possession relatively well in the opponent's half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 74.2% in the top tier of English football (stats via His current contract at Selhurst Park will expire in the summer of 2027, which could make it difficult for Tottenham to sign him on a cut-price deal in this transfer period. (Photo by) Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank Snap Eze Up? Eze can shoot the ball with venom from long range and has got the vision to cut open the opposition defence with a killer pass in the final third. He can make a few driving runs with the ball as well and can contribute by scoring his fair share of goals for his team. The English sensation is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also function as a left-sided wide player if told to do so. He has already proven his worth in the Premier League and won't take much time to adjust to life at Tottenham. Eze would inject more quality and depth into Spurs boss Enzo Maresca's attack. He has what it takes to secure a regular first-team football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season and would serve as an ideal replacement for James Maddison, who suffered a serious injury in pre-season. At 27, Eze is about to enter his prime, which makes him a decent option for Tottenham to consider this summer. With all things considered, Frank would be wise to go all out to snap him up in this transfer period.

British horseracing to go on strike in protest against rise in betting taxes

LONDON (AP) — British horseracing will stage an unprecedented one-day strike on Sept. 10 to protest a proposed rise in taxes on race betting. The four scheduled meetings that day — at Carlisle, Uttoxeter, Lingfield and Kempton — will not take place after agreements between the owners of the courses and the British Horseracing Authority, making it the first time the sport in Britain has voluntarily refused to race in modern history. The BHA set up the 'Axe the Racing Tax' campaign in response to proposals to replace the existing three-tax structure of online gambling duties with a single tax, with fears the current 15% duty on racing could be increased to the 21% levied on games of chance. Brant Dunshea, chief executive at the British Horseracing Authority, said the strike intends to 'highlight to (the) government the serious consequences of the treasury's tax proposals which threaten the very future of our sport.' 'British racing is already in a precarious financial position and research has shown that a tax rise on racing could be catastrophic for the sport and the thousands of jobs that rely on it in towns and communities across the country," Dunshea said. 'This is the first time that British racing has chosen not to race due to government proposals. We haven't taken this decision lightly but in doing so we are urging the government to rethink this tax proposal to protect the future of our sport which is a cherished part of Britain's heritage and culture." The British government said it was bringing the 'treatment of online betting in line with other forms of online gambling to cut down bureaucracy.' 'It is not about increasing or decreasing rates,' the government said, "and we welcome views from all stakeholders including businesses, trade bodies, the third sector and individuals.' ___ AP sports: The Associated Press
