Matchbox and Airfix 'era ends' as Dunstable-born artist dies

BBC News28-01-2025

An artist has saluted two painters who fired generations of youthful imaginations by creating art for Matchbox and Airfix model kit boxes.Mark Postlethwaite tipped his wings in tribute following the death of 84-year-old Roy Huxley, who was born in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, and painted the aircraft images that adorned Matchbox model boxes.Roy Cross, who created box art for Airfix and had a family link to Smallford, Hertfordshire, died in 2024.Postlethwaite, who is also an aviation artist, said Huxley's death marked the end of an era.
Postlethwaite said Roy Huxley, who died on 18 January, first produced paintings for Matchbox in 1972 and was one of the "most recognised box-artists in the world".Cross, who was born in Camberwell, south London, and died in April aged 100, had a 75-year career and was similarly revered.Postlethwaite said Cross was a "legend of aviation art" and an "inspiration".Both had lived near each other in Tunbridge Wells in Kent."Roy Cross was Airfix, Roy Huxley was Matchbox," said Postlethwaite."Now Roy Huxley has died, it's the end of an era."
Cross's son, Anthony Cross, agreed is was "indeed the end of an era"."My father was at times a little surprised he was mostly remembered for his box top art when his fine art, particularly the marine work, was the pinnacle of his artistic creativity," he said. "I guess this is because the Airfix years recreate many happy hours spent in childhood."

Sales run into millions1980 - Computer games introduced. Modelling goes into decline1981 - Airfix goes into receivership; bought by General Mills1985 - Sold to Hobby Products Group of Borden, who also owned Humbrol1995 - Hobby Products Group, including Airfix, sold to Humbrol2006 - Hornby Hobbies Ltd buy Airfix and Humbrol
Roy Cross had been introduced to art by an aunt he spent childhood holidays with in Station Road, Smallford. His son Anthony said: "It's heartening to get so many kind messages of appreciation from people for whom my father's work clearly gave a great deal of pleasure."No doubt this can be said too of Roy Huxley."Both men were talented artists and knew how to stir the blood."
Postlethwaite said Huxley, who also painted images of ships and armoured vehicles, was "renowned" for his detail and accuracy."Roy was very significant in the aviation art business and an inspiration to many, many artists," said Postlethwaite."Anyone who had Matchbox kits would recognises his paintings."The painting on the box was often the reason for buying the kit."The artist created the imagination about the plane with the painting."

Shooter game played by 10 million people closing down on smash-hit consoles in two weeks – but fans say it's GOOD news

A POPULAR video game played by millions of people is shutting down on select consoles. The shooter title is now just weeks away from being killed off on certain machines – and fans say it's actually good news. 6 6 6 Gamers using a PS4 or Xbox One to play The First Descendant will soon be blocked from playing. The studio behind the game say it'll stop working on those machines on June 19, 2025. And the only way to keep playing will be to upgrade to a machine that still offers support for it. That includes the PS5, Xbox Series X or S, or Windows PCs. "Our team does experience difficulties maintaining the PS4 and Xbox One builds," the developers at Nexon explained. "So to concentrate all our resources and capabilities for the new content for Season 3 and beyond, we made this decision. "The planned termination date is June 19, and after the June 19 update, you won't be able to play The First Descendant with PS4 or Xbox One. "But your account information will stay with us since TFD is an online game and supports cross-progression with Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S." The First Descendant is currently less than a year old, which makes the closure all the more shocking. It's a free massively-multiplayer online game that sees empowered 'Descendants' battling alien baddies known as the Vulgus – and has boasted more than 10 million players. Get an inside look at the new PS5 30th anniversary edition Gamers will complete quests, collect loot, and build their characters to have different power specialties. After the closure, some players will be locked out from enjoying the title. But many fans reacted to the news with understanding, even describing it as a good thing. In a Reddit thread about the change, hundreds of fans upvoted the news and said it would allow the game-maker to spend more time making the title even better. 6 One said: "That's fair. They probably want to do bigger stuff with the game." Another wrote: "Y'all gotta let the PS4 go and upgrade." And one added: "It's because the PS4 hardware limitations are limiting the scope of the game design. The dev team want to do more, so they're choosing to leave PS4 players behind. "Clearly they've weighed up the revenue they're getting from PS4 players and are happy to lose that portion. It bodes well for the future of the game to be honest." 6 6 GOING RUSTY It comes just days after another multiplayer game began closing down on older consoles. As of May 29, survival title Rust is no longer available to download for new players on PS4 and Xbox One. And the game will be switched off on those older machines in October this year. Players will need to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S versions of the title to keep playing. OTHER GAME CLOSURES COMING UP Here's what to watch out for... MultiVersus - May 30 xDefiant - June 3 The First Descendant - June 19 Black Desert - June 26 Resident Evil ReVerse - June 29 Madden NFL 21 - June 30 Arizona Sunshine - July 1 Skyworld - July 1 Danmachi Battle Chronicle - September 29 WWE 2K24 - September 30 Madden NFL 22 - October 20 PGA Tour 2K21 - October 30 NBA 2K24 - December 31 This upgrade will be available for free – but you'll still need a newer console to actually enjoy the game. It's also now no longer possible for new players on PS4 and Xbox One to enjoy the game without getting an upgraded console.

I stayed in a floating yacht hotel in Europe – we had champagne breakfasts on a budget and even spotted celebs

Gibraltar's biggest attraction in every sense is the looming mound of limestone that dominates everything here FLOAT YOUR BOAT I stayed in a floating yacht hotel in Europe – we had champagne breakfasts on a budget and even spotted celebs Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) DAVID WALLIAMS was sitting at the next table offering to massage a newlywed couple. First morning aboard the Sunborn floating hotel in Gibraltar and the professional extrovert was in full character, engaging with star-struck holidaymakers as only he can, with a twinkle in his eye. He has already asked to return for November's literary festival, and it's no surprise. Gibraltar has for so long been pigeonholed as a stopover for day trippers. Passengers on the 250-odd cruise ships that briefly moor under the Rock's majestic presence dash around to see a few sights but mainly aim to take advantage of the VAT-free shopping. It's a trend the local tourist board is working hard to reverse. They want travellers to take more time fully taking in the surprisingly large number of things to do on a tiny sun-kissed slab of Britain at the mouth of the Med. And when beer is just £3.75 a pint, why not stay longer to enjoy? Secret bunker Gibraltar's gripping history has a deep association with our Armed Forces. The Royal Engineers were founded here in the 18th century and practically built the place. The honeycomb of tunnels dug by clever sappers during World War Two offers a fascinating insight into the work of our determined Armed Forces and the strategic importance of Gibraltar during the conflict. In one cavern hangs a full-size replica of a legendary Spitfire fighter plane. There is also the spine-chilling story of the Stay Behind Cave — the once secret bunker carved into the heart of the mountain, complete with provisions for a year and a bicycle generator. An elite group of patriotic volunteers agreed to be sealed off from the outside world for a year and spy on the Axis powers, should Gibraltar get overrun — the ultimate one-way ticket in the line of duty. From the exotic Moorish times, through the centuries of the British Empire and beyond, there are tours to take and a bloody back story to hear in the name of entertainment. Strait of Gibraltar Tunnel: A New Bridge Between Continents My wife and I stayed four nights on the permanently moored Sunborn yacht hotel, anchored flush against the dockside of Gibraltar's Ocean Village. It's a 5H joint, and the food and service reflects that. Yet even in high season, a spacious double room with a large window can be yours for £185 a night, including champagne breakfast. Step ashore and you can be seated in one of many lively bars with giant outdoor screens beaming major sports from back home. If that's not for you, just 50 yards away is Little Bay Restaurant — a vibrant Indian fusion eaterie where bubbly manager Kelly welcomes you with warm cockney charm, before delicately blended curries combined with zingy cocktails top off an early summer evening. Gibraltar's biggest attraction in every sense is the looming mound of limestone that dominates everything here. Get to the top via the scenic cable car and peer down from the stomach-churning Skywalk 1,400 feet above the sparkling sea — opened by Luke Skywalker, aka Mark Hamill, himself. Take in the view across the Straits, a 15-mile- wide blue chasm separating Europe from North Africa — which David Walliams heroically swam in aid of Sport Relief in 2008. The Northern Defences are also worth a visit. This cavernous labyrinth of tunnels has been added to over time, since the eighth century. Our guide, Karl Viagas, is steadfastly uncovering more historical treasures underground that will be spectacular when fully open. 6 You can peer down from the stomach-churning Skywalk 1,400 feet above the sparkling sea — opened by Luke Skywalker, aka Mark Hamill, himself Credit: InfoGibraltar 6 Soldiers in traditional uniform Credit: Supplied 6 The view of Gibraltar from the top of the Rock Credit: Getty James Bond creator Ian Fleming was stationed here with Naval Intelligence, and daring undersea attacks on the Allied fleet by Italian scubamen in the war fuelled his already vivid imagination for future books and movies. And in true 007 style, we were accompanied by a glamorous former Miss World who would grace any Bond movie. Kaiane Aldorino, former Mayor of Gibraltar, is now an ambassador for the territory. Sunshine, cheap beer and a beauty queen for company — plus you can spend British pounds. But like many places, travel and the natural world can often rub each other up the wrong way. Gibraltar's playful macaque monkeys are funny to watch for a time but have become a way for taxi drivers to make a few easy quid. The roads at the top of the rock were clogged with cabbies queuing to feed junk food to these wild animals in return for them doing tricks. Far better to join Brian Gomila on his Monkey Talk tour in the kinder environment of the surrounding trees. And if you really want to go green, join Stuart at EBike-Gibraltar. Power-assisted cycling on a lap around the base of the rock is easy on the legs and the eyes as you stop off at small fishing villages with inviting beaches. There's a lot of fun to be had too. A dizzying gin-tasting session at the Spirit Of The Rock distillery was as enlightening as it was alcoholic. David Walliams might agree, it's Little Britain — but with Spanish style and weather.

Liverpool to seal stunning £169m transfer as Bryan Mbuemo's staggering Man Utd wages leaked

Liverpool to seal stunning £169m transfer as Bryan Mbuemo's staggering Man Utd wages leaked The latest transfer stories and rumours from around the Premier League Bryan Mbuemo (Image:) Here are the latest Premier League transfer stories on Wednesday, June 4. Liverpool to seal historic £169m double transfer Liverpool are on the verge of completing a major £169m double transfer that will see them break a Premier League record. ‌ Multiple reports now indicate deals for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz and Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez are done, with the former set to smash English football's transfer record. German publication Bild claim that Wirtz 'has already agreed terms' on a deal that could cost Liverpool up to £127m. That would usurp the £106.8m Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in January 2023. ‌ The Reds are also are on the brink of announcing the capture of Kerkez for £42m. Journalist Rudy Galetti has reported Liverpool are "taking the last steps" to complete the deal for the Hungarian international. Galetti wrote on X: 'Liverpool are taking the last steps for Milos Kerkez. 'The deal is almost sealed between Liverpool and Bournemouth for - €50m plus performance-related bonuses as a final fee. Article continues below 'A five-year contract was already agreed upon with the player days ago.' Liverpool have made a swift splash in the transfer market since winning the Premier League title, with at least two more signings expected in the next month. Mbuemo's Man Utd wage demands emerge as clubs talk Bryan Mbuemo's Man Utd wage demands have emerged as the striker looks to earn five-times more than his current Brentford salary. ‌ The Times report Mbuemo wants £250,000 a week after informing United he would prefer to join them over Arsenal, Newcastle or Tottenham. One national media report has described his demands as "looking like a typo", given the huge increase in pay he is looking for. He is currently paid £50,000 a week. It emerged on Wednesday United and Brentford are now in club-to-club talks over the deal, with Brentford holding out for over £60m. United are hoping to be able to bring that figure down after already shelling out that amount on Matheus Cunha from Wolves. ‌ Journalist Ben Jacobs wrote: "Manchester United are now in club-to-club talks with Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo. No bid yet. "£50m+ required as Mbeumo has a one-year option Brentford can trigger, alongside the 12 months left on his current deal, meaning they don't feel under pressure to sell." He added: "Brentford currently using £62.5m Cunha fee as a valuation yardstick but #MUFC believe a lower fee is possible, especially with Mbeumo keen on the move." ‌ Arsenal hold concrete talks for striker Arsenal have held "concrete talks" with RB Leipzig over £85m-rated Slovenian forward Benjamin Sesko. Sky Sport Germany confirmed the news, with reporter Florian Plettenberg writing on X: 'As exclusively revealed, Arsenal have entered concrete talks with RB Leipzig over Benjamin #Sesko. Andrea Berta has all the information regarding the release clause, payment structures, etc. "So far, Arsenal are the only club in direct contact with Leipzig. Manchester United have shown interest in the player, but have not yet made contact with Leipzig." ‌ Arsenal are also interested in Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres, who was previously on loan at Swansea before his career exploded in Portugal. The Gunners' number one target was Newcastle's Alexander Isak but that move is not happening. Tottenham only interested in big Son offers Tottenham will only listen to significant offers for captain Son Heung-min this summer amid renewed interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, the PA news agency understands. ‌ Son was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia two years ago, but rejected advances to stick around for the start of Ange Postecoglou's tenure. Postecoglou subsequently named Son as Spurs captain and last month the South Korean forward led the team to Europa League success to achieve his goal of winning silverware at the club. Speculation over Son's future has been rife during his 10th season at Tottenham and whilst the club triggered a 12-month option in his deal in January, he is set to enter the final year of his contract in July. ‌ Son will also turn 33 next month and was affected by injury problems during the 2024-25 campaign, but the Premier League club will only let their talismanic skipper leave for a significant transfer fee, PA understands. Spurs are set to visit South Korea again later this summer for pre-season – the third time in four years they have travelled to Son's homeland to prepare for a new campaign. Even though Son – who is currently on international duty – only managed 11 goals last term, which is his lowest return since his debut season, his global status offers enormous commercial value to the club. ‌ Son is not the only key figure with an uncertain future with no clarity over head coach Postecoglou, who remains in the dark as to whether he will get a third season at Tottenham. Man City agree Reijnders deal Manchester City have agreed a fee with AC Milan for Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. City are set to pay 55million euros (approximately £46million) for the 26-year-old, who has agreed a five-year contract to move to the Premier League. ‌ The formalities of the deal are still to be completed but it appears City have landed their first major summer signing. Reijnders was a bright spark in a disappointing season for Milan, who only finished eighth in Serie A, missing out on qualification for Europe. Reijnders, who joined the Italian giants from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2023, scored 15 goals in 2024-25 and will bolster Pep Guardiola's midfield options following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne. Article continues below City will play their first match of the Club World Cup against Morocco's Wydad AC on June 18.
