Austin officials reassure public on light rail project

Yahoo04-04-2025
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Five years ago, Austin voters said yes to a bond package that would fund the construction of a light rail line through the city, but Project Connect has yet to break ground.Austin transit leaders met this week and want to reassure the public that it is happening.
The Austin Transit Partnership, the group in charge of bringing light rail to Austin, held a luncheon this week to provide an update on its efforts.
'The Austin Transit Partnership released their draft environmental impact statement, which is a huge milestone for us to continue forward with Project Connect and Austin Light Rail,' said Ashika Ganguly, the executive director of Transit Forward.
'However, we're still seeing a lot of ongoing outside threats to the project into Austin light rail, specifically legislation attacking Austin local control and our ability to build light rail here in the city and ongoing lawsuits and the threat of federal funding being taken away,' Ganguly said.
ATP said they're hitting milestones consistently, that work is happening, and that they're still on track to start construction in 2027.
'One of the comments we get in that effort… all the time is, get moving, but let's get the project under construction. Somebody even said, let's have less meetings. And I said, 'Well, I hear you and amen to that. But at the same level, us going out and talking to the community is part of the process,'' Austin Transit Partnership CEO Greg Canally said.
CapMetro is also a key player in the future of Austin transit, working alongside ATP and the Texas Department of Transportation.
'Most people don't realize how much work there is to do between idea and actually like turning dirt and tearing up the streets,' CapMetro CEO Dottie Watkins said.
'I need every single one of y'all to tell 10 people about what's going on with Project Connect and that things are going forward and that we continue moving forward,' said Watkins.
Watkins said a key to fewer traffic headaches amid a series of construction projects, like the I-35 Capital Express, is to explore your options.
'We will be encouraging a lot of folks to use the bus. We'll be encouraging folks to work from home. We'll be encouraging folks to try Vanpool, to try the commuter rail, to try alternate routes, so there will be a lot of solutions coming out to that,' said Watkins.
ATP also released new renderings of the light rail system and how it could look.
'I have a vision of Austin in 2035 with a fully functional light rail and continued service improvements to our buses, our bike share, and all of Cap Metro's other services, and I see that vision. I know everyone who's going to be in this room today sees that vision, and we are ready to make it a reality,' Ganguly said.

Landry: State's successes the 'greatest story that has yet to be told'

The 20th annual Chamber Southwest Louisiana LegisGator Luncheon was hosted at L'Auberge Casino Resort on Friday. LegisGator is the largest legislative event in the state. Hosted each year to bring constituents, state and federal representatives together in the same room, the luncheon serves as an opportunity for lawmakers to update community members on state and federal actions directly. This year several state leaders attended the luncheon, including U.S Sens. Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy and Gov. Jeff Landry. This was not the first LegisGator for these government leaders, but it was for Chamber of Southwest Louisiana President Scott Walker. He opened the luncheon by speaking on how the region is 'on the cusp' of dynamic change. He stepped into the role of president about six months ago. In that time, he has recognized Southwest Louisiana as an adaptive region 'built on energy, industry and grit' that 'pulls together to get things done.' 'We are shaping and innovating the future of energy, advanced manufacturing, aerospace and defense,' he said. 'I see us creating opportunity here, right here in Southwest Louisiana. We can create opportunity here for companies, for workers, for families and for our communities.' For Landry, LegisGator was an 18-month check-in. More than a year into his term. Louisiana has been gradually moving up the ranks in surveys, with the state jumping up in nationwide rankings, he said. This is in addition to statewide increases in job opportunities, new business interests and an impending industrial boom, he said. Louisiana has reached a historic level of economic activity, Landry said. There is $70 billion in private investment planned throughout the state — from the $10 million AI data center being built in Richland Parish to the several carbon-capture projects that have been proposed in Louisiana. Among that growth, he called Southwest Louisiana one of the 'bright, shining spots' in Louisiana. With investments like the LNG Center of Excellence and the I-10-Calcasieu River Bridge Project, the region is keeping up with the state's momentum. These steps taken towards a more diversified economy are thanks to 'one of the most cohesive congressional delegations,' he said. One of those delegates is Cassidy, who is finishing his second term as a U.S. Senator. Working to better the state and country is his 'higher purpose,' he said. 'If I'm only living for myself, what's the worth of living? But if I'm waking up and thinking about how do I work and win for the people of Louisiana and the people of the United States of America, I got a spring in my step.' He spoke to a few of the feathers he has in his legislative cap. He worked to help secure the $11 billion Louisiana infrastructure that came with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, which includes $150 million for the Calcasieu River Bridge and 'hundreds of millions of dollars' for flood mitigation and coastal restoration. Kennedy said he believes the state's future can be better than its past and present, but will take hard work and self-sufficiency. 'We're only as good as our dreams. We shouldn't fear our future when we ought to grab hold of it. I'm not going to bubble wrap. No one's coming to save us but ourselves, folks. And in Washington, D.C., the water is not going to clear up until you get the pigs out of the creek.' Louisiana's present is the 'greatest story that no one in this state is writing about,' Landry said. 'Over the past 18 months, we have actually been able to assemble that critical mass of people who want to put aside the selfish part of politics and are hell-bent on changing the state,' he said. 'We are no longer the laughingstock of the South. Louisiana, for once in a lifetime, is poised to take its place as a leader in a new industrial South. And if you don't believe me, just go look up Google.' He urged residents to get 'past the gaslighting that people like to do that divides us' and have 'faith in those that we have elected to change the state.' 'While we have waited, I want you to know, we don't wait anymore. Today, the world gets to see us as who we are. … As the people who get to share a culture of hard work and humility,' he said. 'And whether they write this story today, or not, today we are living in the greatest story that has yet to be told.'

I-77 program offering free rides reaches milestone

I-77 Mobility Partners is celebrating another milestone in its ongoing efforts to improve regional mobility and enhance connections to essential services. In July, the company surpassed more than $100,000 in free rides on the I-77 Express lanes for participants in its groundbreaking I-77 Community Assistance and Rate Equity Solutions (CARES) Program – a venture that provides improved access to financial well-being, health care, education and additional opportunities. 'We believe this is one of the first programs of its type in the country,' says David Garcia, CEO of I-77 Mobility Partners. 'As a proud member of the Charlotte and Lake Norman region, we understand the peace-of-mind that reliable travel can offer all our neighbors as they travel to job interviews, doctor's visits and other important appointments.' An Innovative Solution I-77 Express is a public-private partnership between the North Carolina Department of Transportation and I-77 Mobility Partners that developed an innovative solution to a critical transportation corridor that was often plagued by congestion. After responding to a competitive state-led procurement process, I-77 Mobility Partners secured more than $500 million in private financing – money that did not come from taxpayers' pockets – allowing the NCDOT to make major improvements to 26 miles of I-77 roughly 20 years ahead of schedule. Those improvements have decreased travel time for all drivers – not just those who chose to use the express lanes. For example, average weekday peak period speeds in the free general-purpose lanes have increased 30-40% since prior to construction in 2015 – and that's despite a 13% increase in traffic volume. I-77 CARES Piloted in partnership with the Mecklenburg County Department of Community Resources in 2023, the I-77 CARES Program began by offering five free rides per month to any resident who received assistance through the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Program. As demand grew, I-77 Mobility Partners formally launched the program in 2024 by expanding its scope to residents in Iredell County and doubling the number of free trips each month to 10. Notably, the company pays all costs associated with the program, including reimbursing the counties for the time it takes their employees to verify the applicants' information. A Wonderful Program 'I rely on my father to take me to my medical and dental appointments,' wrote one participant in a recent poll of the program. 'So, the plan gets me to my appointments on time.' Another wrote, 'I appreciate this program so much. It helps me get my grandson from daycare. I feel much more comfortable in the toll lanes away from all the traffic.' And yet another wrote, 'Thank you so much for this wonderful program. We appreciate you so much.' Additional Donations In addition to the more than 17,000 free trips it has given away through the I-77 CARES program, I-77 Mobility Partners is on track to donate more than $750,000 to area schools and nonprofits. In particular, it is focused on promoting STEM education in Title One schools, reducing teen-driver accidents and eliminating food scarcity. 'I-77 Express has proven that managed lanes offer drivers the choice of reliable travel times while improving traffic flow and speeds in the free, general-purpose lanes,' says Rob Boisvert, Director of Corporate Affairs for I-77 Mobility Partners. 'Moving forward, we will continually search for ways in which we can further improve the surrounding community and the people we serve.'

Ensure Quality Repairs by Choosing a Reputable Autobody Repair Shop in New York

Maria grabbed coffee near Times Square last Tuesday when a driver smacked into her Lexus. Simple dent, right? Wrong. Three shops gave her wildly different quotes: $800, $2,400, and $1,650. Same damage. Welcome to New York auto repair, where nothing makes sense until you know what to look for. These price gaps aren't always about getting ripped off. Sometimes shops just work differently some cut corners, others do things right. The trick is figuring out who's who before you hand over your keys. Why This Actually Matters Jake learnt this lesson during Fleet Week. His rental got hit in Brooklyn, so he picked the closest shop. Seemed logical. Six weeks later, the rental company hit him with extra charges because their inspection found the repair falling apart. A $500 fix turned into a $2,000 headache that lasted months. Cars today aren't like in the old days. They're packed with computers, sensors, and safety stuff that all works together. When someone who learnt repair work twenty years ago starts messing with these systems, they can break things that keep you alive in crashes. The good shops know this and actually train their people properly instead of just winging it. Spotting the Pros Professional Certifications and Standards Walk into decent shops and you'll see ASE and I-CAR certificates hanging up. These cost real cash and require ongoing training. Lots of places skip them because they're expensive and time-consuming. But they separate the professionals from the guys just trying to make a buck. Good shops have different people for different jobs. Framework, paint, electronics – these are separate skills that take years to get right. You don't want the paint guy trying to fix your car's computer system. Insurance Provider Partnerships Big insurance companies like State Farm and Geico don't recommend shops randomly. They check these places out thoroughly because their reputation depends on it. When a shop works with multiple major insurers, they've probably earned that trust. Advanced Equipment and Technology Professional places have invested hundreds of thousands in proper equipment – computerised frame machines, paint booths, and diagnostic computers that actually talk to your car. Cheaper places try getting by with older equipment that can't handle modern vehicles properly. This equipment needs regular maintenance too. Quality shops schedule this stuff religiously because precision matters with safety systems. What Good Service Looks Like Professional shops want you coming back next time something happens. They send updates, take photos of the work, and actually answer when you call. They're not trying to squeeze every penny out of one repair and disappear. Read online reviews, but look for patterns. Everyone complains about something, but notice what customers mention. Clear communication? Are projects finishing on time? Problems getting resolved without fights? These details matter. Questions You Need to Ask Before dropping off your car, have real conversations: What does your warranty actually cover? How do you handle insurance claims? How often will you update me during repairs? Can you show photos of similar work you've done? What happens when you find more damage? Good shops love these questions and give straight answers. Places that get defensive or give vague responses are telling you something important. Paperwork That Protects You Legitimate shops give detailed written estimates breaking down everything – labour, parts, materials. This prevents surprise charges later and keeps everyone honest. Parts make a big difference. Original manufacturer parts fit perfectly and last longer but cost more. Aftermarket parts save money but might not be quite the same quality. Honest shops explain these choices instead of just pushing whatever makes them the most profit. Regulatory Compliance and Consumer Protection New York protects customers with regulations about written estimates, minimum warranties, and disclosure requirements. Professional shops know these rules and follow them consistently. They stand behind their work with real warranties and don't make you fight to use them. Checking Out the Shop Nothing beats visiting in person. Well-organised shops with clean work areas usually approach repairs the same way – systematically and professionally. Talk to the staff. Do they know your specific car? Can they explain what needs doing in normal English? Don't automatically go with the cheapest quote. Rock-bottom prices often mean corners get cut or they missed damage you'll pay for later. The most expensive isn't automatically the best either, but it might reflect better materials or more thorough work. Establishing Long-Term Service Partnerships New York driving is brutal on cars. Finding a shop you trust pays off over time. They learn your vehicle, understand what matters to you, and they're there when you need them again. Strong relationships happen when shops consistently deliver what they promise, when they promise it, for the price they quoted. When you find that, you've got something valuable in a city where good service gets surprisingly hard to find. Many quality autobody shops in New York do more than just fix accident damage. They help with maintenance, inspections, and advice for keeping cars running well under tough city conditions. The Bottom Line Choosing the right auto body shop takes homework. Check credentials, visit facilities, ask tough questions, and pay attention to how they treat you during the sales process. That usually predicts how they'll handle problems later. Time spent finding the right place saves headaches and money and makes sure your car comes back safe and looking right. In a city where your car takes daily punishment from traffic, weather, and parking spaces designed for bicycles, having a repair shop you actually trust becomes invaluable. Smart car owners treat finding good shops like finding good doctors – essential relationships worth building and keeping. When accidents happen (and they will), having established trust with professionals who know your vehicle makes terrible situations manageable. The difference between random shops and quality places often shows up months later, when repairs either hold up perfectly or start falling apart. Choose wisely now, because fixing bad repair work always costs more than doing it right the first time. TIME BUSINESS NEWS
