Operation Mahadev used to scare ‘digital arrest' victims

Time of India5 days ago
Rajkot: Amreli police have uncovered a new variation of the 'digital arrest' scam, where criminals exploit India's recent anti-terror operation in Kashmir to intimidate and extort victims.
Such fraudsters earlier posed as Mumbai police officers, fabricating tales of drug or money laundering cases to intimidate victims. Now, they invoke Operation Mahadev — the security forces' mission to eliminate terrorists linked to the April Pahalgam attack — to lend a ring of authenticity to their threats.
In one such case, 22-year-old Rajula resident Jay Katariya lodged a complaint stating that his sister Chetna, an MBBS student in Jaipur, was targeted.
On Aug 2, while visiting Rajula, she received a call from a man claiming to be a Pahalgam police inspector.
He alleged that her phone number was found on a terrorist's mobile phone during Operation Mahadev and accused her of being linked to terrorists.
When she denied the allegations, the caller sent her photographs of 21 supposed terrorists and 17 forged "arrest and seizure" documents on WhatsApp. She was told to get a clearance certificate from the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) and was connected by video call to another man in a police uniform.

The so-called "senior officer" told her that the statement was required for court, accused her of possessing black money linked to terrorism, and instructed her to transfer funds to prove her innocence. She complied, but the scammers vanished when she asked for her money back.
Realizing she had been duped, Chetna told her brother, and the family called the cybercrime helpline. Police have begun an investigation.

Ludhiana shoe trader Gurvinder Singh Prinkle, who survived two murder attempts, accuses jailed gangster Rishav Benipal to be orchestrator.

Ludhiana: A Ludhiana shoe trader who survived a shooting attack last year has accused another armed assailant of attempting to kill him, alleging the plot was again orchestrated by jailed gangster Rishav Benipal. Gurvinder Singh Prinkle, 33, said a man carrying a pistol entered his Chandigarh Road shop on Thursday, minutes after he left, and threatened his workers before leaving. Prinkle alleged the intruder, identified on CCTV as Lakhbir Singh alias Lakhu Baba of Jalandhar's Lambra area, video-called someone to confirm he had missed him. Prinkle told police that Benipal — who allegedly shot him at his Khud Mohalla store in Nov 2024 — had sent Lakhbir to finish the job. Division Number 7 police lodged a case against Lakhbir, Benipal and six others under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to abetment, attempted murder, conspiracy, intimidation and the Arms Act. "CCTV footage clearly shows Lakhbir entering with a pistol. He already faces several FIRs (first-information reports), including those for firing incidents," Station house officer (SHO) Bhupinder Singh said, adding that the roles of others named by Prinkle were under verification. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Previous Attack On Nov 8, 2024, Prinkle was shot seven times in his Khud Mohalla shop when Benipal and aide Sushil Kumar opened fire, disguised as customers with guns in carry bags. Prinkle fired back with his licensed pistol, injuring both attackers. Police arrested Benipal and Sushil later that evening while they sought medical help, and later nabbed an accomplice, Akash, with an illegal firearm. Investigators said the attack stemmed from a month-old argument in which Prinkle allegedly abused Benipal's mother over the phone.
