Dragons sign former Exeter scrum-half Armstrong
Armstrong will contest the number nine jersey with Wales international Rhodri Williams."I'm really excited to join the Dragons and embrace the opportunity to challenge myself in a new environment, playing rugby in Wales," Armstrong said."The club has put together a strong, talented squad ahead of the new season and I'm eager to play a key role in helping us achieve success on the field."Williams is Dragons' first-choice scrum-half and Armstrong provides a more experienced rival along with homegrown 22-year-olds Che Hope and Morgan Lloyd, plus Wales Under-20s cap Logan Franklin.Head coach Filo Tiatia said: "Niall is a talented and driven scrum-half and we're already enjoying having him within the environment."Dragons have had an extensive summer recruitment drive after finishing bottom of the URC table last season, with Armstrong their 14th senior arrival.They have also brought in Wyn Jones, Dillon Lewis, Robert Hunt, Seb Davies, Levi Douglas, Thomas Young, Harry Beddall, Mackenzie Martin, Tinus de Beer, Jac Lloyd, Fetuli Paea, Fine Inisi and David Richards.

Wiffen departs Loughborough swim programme
Olympic gold medallist Daniel Wiffen has confirmed his departure from the prestigious Loughborough University swim programme. The 24-year-old took to social media to confirm the move, which ends a five-year spell that saw him rise to become one of the sport's biggest stars."The day has finally come - I have decided that I am moving away from the Loughborough University swim programme," Wiffen posted on Instagram."A place I called home for five years. A place where I grew from a swimmer that would never make it, to an Olympic champion."When I joined Loughborough, I went in with personal bests of 8:13 and 15:39 and now I'm leaving with personal bests of 7:38 and 14:34," he continued."I just wanted to show this as this programme made me the athlete I am today and I'm sure it will continue to make new Olympic champions long after I'm gone."The County Armagh man went on to praise his coach Andi Manley, who led his rise to Olympic champion as he captured gold for Ireland in the men's 800m freestyle at Paris 2024. Wiffen also revealed that he would return to his native Magheralin to recover from the appendicitis issues that hindered his recent failed attempt at retaining his World Championship titles. He also confirmed he plans to spend time training in the United States with his twin brother Nathan, who is currently studying and swimming in California. "Now this chapter has come to a close I will be moving back to Ireland while I rehab from my appendicitis surgery and then will be hopefully joining Nathan in California for periods until LA28. Thank you, Loughborough," Wiffen added.

The 24-year-old announced his return to rugby union after an 18-month stint in the NFL and has made himself available to represent Wales once again but is a target for R360. Rees-Zammit has electric pace and was one of the deadliest finishers in the world game before heading to the US with 14 tries in 32 appearances for Wales. The back-three is not an area of weakness for Wales with the likes of Blair Murray, Josh Adams, Tom Rogers and Mason Grady, among others, in the frame but the return of Rees-Zammit is a big boost for Welsh rugby. "I think you wouldn't rule anything out," said Tandy when asked whether Rees-Zammit would be included in his autumn squad. "Zammo brings a big effect and excitement by coming back. The 24-year-old is potentially the poster boy Welsh rugby desperately needs and is the type of player who can attract new supporters as Tandy found out when his 14-year-old daughter told him the news. "My oldest daughter told me. That was a bit worrying!" joked Tandy when asked how he found out Rees-Zammit was returning to rugby union. "She said 'Zammit's coming home!' And I was like 'Aaaaaargh. Give me the phone!' That was how I found out. "As a coach, you day dream. Coming back, you're obviously looking at what you've got. And then you look at what you could have. It's obviously a great boost for him, the game and the fans. It's great." Rees-Zammit has not yet announced which club he will sign for but according to reports he is a significant target for rugby's new rebel league R360. New Wales boss Steve Tandy screamed in shock and told his daughter to pass him her phone after she read Louis Rees-Zammit was returning to rugby union. Rees-Zammit has spent the last 18 months in the NFL after announcing in January 2024 that he would retire from rugby in order to pursue his American Football dream. The 32-times capped Wales wing signed an active roster deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2025 season after being part of their practice squad in 2024 – but Tandy now looks set to have the 24-year-old flier at his disposal after he announced his rugby return on social media. 'My oldest daughter told me, that was a bit worrying,' Tandy said at his first press conference as Wales head coach. 'She said 'Zammit's coming home!' And I was like 'Aaaaaargh. Give me the phone!'
