Fundraising drive ends as RM50,000 target reached for teen's heart surgery
The Star Foundation, which launched an initiative under its Medical Fund Programme to raise the needed funds, has ended the fundraising drive.
Chiet was diagnosed with severe supravalvular neo-aortic stenosis and requires life-saving surgery at National Heart Insitute (IJN).
The total cost of the procedure is RM80,000, with RM30,000 secured from One Hope Charity & Welfare, a non-profit organisation.
Thanks to the public's swift support, the fundraising target has been met, and even surpassed.
In a media statement, Star Foundation said the surplus funds would go towards helping the next eligible patient under the foundation's Medical Fund programme.
"Donors who wish to obtain a tax exemption receipt are encouraged to complete the Medical Fund Donation Form on the Star Foundation's website," it added.
Star Foundation is the charitable arm of Star Media Group. Since 2016, the Foundation has supported underprivileged individuals by funding critical medical treatment and care.

Initial reports yesterday (July 20) noted unhealthy readings on the Air Pollutant Index (API) recorded by the Department of Environment (DOE) at five locations, including Nilai, Negri Sembilan; Alor Gajah, Melaka; Putrajaya; along with Banting and Johan Setia in Selangor. Those looking to keep an eye on the API can use the Department of Environment's (DOE) official mobile app, MyJAS EQMS , which provides access to the API Management System as well as river and marine water quality indexes. MyJAS EQMS has a dashboard displaying the most recent API readings from DOE monitoring stations and the dominant type of air pollutant. — Screenshots from app The app provides hourly updates on air quality measured at various monitoring stations set up across the country. It also displays a record of the hourly API readings from the last 24 hours. To check the air quality in their area, users can simply tap on the 'APIMS' button after launching the app, which will then open a dashboard showing the most recent readings, the nearest monitoring station, and the dominant type of air pollutant contributing to the reading. For instance, at the time of publication, the Petaling Jaya monitoring station recorded a moderate API reading of 78, with 'PM2.5' identified as the dominant pollutant. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometres or smaller in diameter, which is small enough to be easily inhaled into the lungs. The DOE categorises API readings of 101 and above as unhealthy, while readings over 200 are considered very unhealthy. A colour-coded legend explaining the API categories and values is also available in the app. MyJAS EQMS further includes a map showing the most recent API readings from DOE monitoring stations nationwide, along with the option to check air quality in other regions across the country. The app is available on both the iOS App Store and Google Play Store. The APIMS dashboard is also available on the DOE website.

RM2,000 fine soon for Kuching dog owners who ignore rabies rules
KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will soon impose a RM2,000 fine on irresponsible dog owners who allow their pets to roam freely or fail to have them vaccinated against rabies. Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the current RM50 compound had proven ineffective as a deterrent, prompting the council to seek stronger action. He did not specify when MBKS would enforce the increased penalty but said it would be "within this year." Speaking to reporters after announcing the construction of a RM1.5 million community centre at the Taman Hui Sing residential area, Wee said he had received approval from the relevant authorities to impose the increased penalty. "People still don't listen when we keep reminding them to keep their pets within their compounds," he said. He added that MBKS had ramped up its free rabies vaccination programme from twice a year to five times annually after much of Kuching South was declared a rabies-infected area. "We are doing our part. The public must do theirs. Everyone has a role to play in keeping society safe." Wee also stressed that the council would not entertain appeals for waivers on the grounds of financial hardship. "We understand that times are bad. But no matter how difficult things are, you cannot risk other people's lives. Pet owners have been given ample opportunities to comply," he said. Under the Animal Act 1953, failure to vaccinate a dog in a rabies-infected area carries a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or imprisonment of up to three months, or both. In Sarawak, when an area is officially declared rabies-infected by the Department of Veterinary Services, the Rabies Order and Rabies Vaccination Order come into force. Taman Hui Sing once had a serious problem with rabies-infected strays.

IJN honours life-saving donors, celebrates Tun Mahathir's 100th birthday
Special recognition was given to the Health Ministry for its consistent support through UTKKKM, a partnership that continues to be critical in providing equitable access to treatment for underprivileged patients. KUALA LUMPUR - Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) paid tribute to the generous individuals and organisations who have played a vital role in saving lives by supporting treatment for underprivileged heart patients on Sunday. The appreciation ceremony also marked a significant moment in IJN's history as it celebrated the 100th birthday of its founding visionary, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the 99th birthday of Tun Dr Hasmah Mohamad Ali. Held at a hotel here, the NGO Appreciation Hi-Tea brought together representatives from 21 non-governmental organisations and key corporate donors whose continuous support has helped hundreds of patients receive critical cardiac care. Their contributions, through the IJN Foundation and direct partnerships, have made a tangible impact on the lives of many families. Among the organisations recognised were Lembaga Zakat Selangor, One Hope Charity & Welfare, Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan, Yayasan Tenaga Nasional, Maybank Foundation, KitaFund, Sinar Harian, Star Foundation, NSTP and others from various states and sectors. In 2024 alone, over RM49.9 million was raised through collaborative efforts involving the Government of Malaysia via Unit Taksiran Khas Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (UTKKKM), the IJN Foundation and 17 NGOs. Your donations, no matter the amount, translate directly into lives saved and families kept whole,' he said in his speech.
