Chilean gang targeting athletes was brought down in part by their selfies
Some crimes are very difficult to solve. Some aren't.
The seven members of a Chilean gang who found themselves facing federal charges earlier this week in connection with burglaries at the homes of multiple pro athletes were brought down in part by taking selfies with their loot.
Via Tod Robberson of ESPN.com, a 20-page affidavit attached to the criminal complaint and unsealed earlier this week explains that three of the alleged burglars appear in photos taken with watches apparently stolen from NBA player Bobby Portis Jr. The photos were uploaded to a secure Apple iCloud account. Authorities secured access to it through a search warrant.
The Portis burglary resulted in the theft of property worth $1.48 million.
The FBI also used higher-tech methods in cracking the case, including license-plate reader data and cell phone tower data that matched one or more of the defendants' phones with cars they had rented.
To date, arrests have been made of both alleged burglars and two alleged fences in the New York/New Jersey area. The first wave of apprehensions has been called the 'tip of the iceberg.' It remains to be seen how big it is, and how deep it goes.

Dumas (10-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) looked to bounce back from an April loss to Michal Oleksiejczuk. Less than three weeks after the fight, Dumas was arrested for home invasion and battery, among other charges. Escambia County (Fla.) court records show Dumas' attorney filed a motion Monday to modify Dumas' bond agreement. It's unclear what those requested changes are, but the initial terms limited him to a 100-mile radius of his residence while he partook in GPS monitoring. One particular event stands out in Murray's memory – the day he almost lost his life at just eight years old. But on that fateful day, as he was riding in the front seat of a car driven by his uncle Reuben, he found himself caught in the middle of a conflict between rival gangs. The current point guard of the New Orleans Pelicans recounted that harrowing experience during his appearance on "The Pivot" podcast, saying it galvanized his need to protect himself at all times, up to this very day. A tough childhood Murray's rough upbringing is no secret. He was already active on the streets at an age when most kids were still playing with toys. Growing up in Seattle's inner city, he was exposed to a life of crime from a young age. In fact, he spent time in juvenile detention. I was about, what, seven, eight years old and I was in the car with him and all his partners. And we end up just driving, we going to my cousin's house." "And a real situation happened. And you know, we got pulled over. And there was about eight guns drawn on us," he continued. "It was a real moment for me. You know, as an eight-year-old, sitting in that front seat with him and not knowing what's going on." Fortunately, Murray's cousin happened to be in the other car and prevented the bloodshed from happening. However, it was a moment that resonated with the young Dejounte and shaped his perspective on life. "If it wasn't for that moment, like I wouldn't be sitting here with y'all. An eight-year-old would have got killed in a crossfire or something we had nothing to do with," he remarked. Though he was still young and could barely fend for himself, he knew, right then and there, that if he were to make a name for himself, he had to ensure he was alive to do so. "From that moment on, it kind of opened my eyes as a eight-year-old, like 'Damn, this is what's going on outside of the house,'" Murray shared. "That was like, you know, one of the real moments for me. You know, an eight-year-old seeing that. And then from that moment, I'm like, I'll never be in that situation again. Like I'mma forever protect myself. You know?" Advertisement It took a while for Dejounte to get on the right path. Surrounded by people who knew no other way to live than to gang bang and sell drugs, he ended up in juvenile detention before meeting Jamal Crawford, an NBA superstar and a Seattle legend. Vowing to make a better life for himself, Dejounte, who stands 6'5" with long arms, became a highly-touted high school player who eventually played at the University of Washington. He was then selected in the first round by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2016 NBA Draft and never looked back, becoming an All-Star in 2022. Zion Williamson is innocent until proven guilty, and that's the exact approach the Pelicans' owner is taking on this matter. Benson is seemingly supporting Williamson with the lawsuit ongoing. 'You know, lawsuits are lawsuits… People can sue for anything. There's no reason. You can be innocent or not. So, it's just something that people do. Unfortunately.' Zion Williamson faces serous allegations that involve rape, physical assault, and death threats. Shortly after the lawsuit was made public, Williamson's legal team issued a statement, acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations while also denying them, according to Will Guillory of The Athletic. 'The allegations contained in the complaint are categorically false and reckless. This is the plaintiff's third set of attorneys. The 24-year-old forward has not made any public statements regarding the allegations. Instead, Zion Williamson is letting his legal team take charge of the lawsuit. In the meantime, the Pelicans star is involved in trade rumors with the offseason quickly approaching. Williamson played just 30 games for New Orleans this season as he's been dealing with a bone bruise in his lower back. However, when healthy, he is undeniably one of the best players on the court. Zion Williamson ended the 2024-25 campaign averaging 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 56.7% from the floor and 23.1% from the three-point line.
