Pennsylvania Education Department raises income limits for school meal programs
More students across Pennsylvania will now have access to free or reduced-price school meals, as the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) has raised income eligibility limits for the 2025–26 academic year.
The update is part of the state's ongoing effort to ensure all students have access to nutritious meals during the school day, supporting both learning and overall well-being.
The revised guidelines took effect on July 1, 2025, and aligned with annual federal updates issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
What's changed?
The new income thresholds allow more families to qualify for meal benefits:
A family of four earning $40,882 or less annually is now eligible for free meals.
A family of four earning up to $58,016 qualifies for reduced-price meals.
Eligibility depends on both household size and total income.
Schools typically send out applications at the beginning of the academic year. In some cases, students are automatically eligible based on participation in other government assistance programs.
Why it matters
Expanding access to school meal programs helps address child hunger and reduces the financial burden on families. Nutritious meals at school contribute to better classroom behaviour, higher attendance rates, and improved academic performance.

These benefits are especially important for students from low- and middle-income households.
In addition to supporting physical health, school meals also help reduce stress and promote a more equitable learning environment, ensuring all students have the fuel they need to focus and succeed.
Programs impacted
The updated income limits apply to several federally assisted programs, including:
National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
School Breakfast Program (SBP)
Special Milk Program
Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)
Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)
These programs serve children during the school year and, in some cases, during summer and after-school hours as well.
What about schools with free meals for all?
Many schools in Pennsylvania participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), a federal initiative that allows schools in high-poverty areas to serve free meals to all students, regardless of household income. Families whose children attend a CEP-participating school do not need to submit income applications.
What families should do next
Families are encouraged to:
Check with their child's school or district office to see if it participates in the CEP.
Review the new income guidelines to determine eligibility.
Complete and return meal benefit applications if required by the school.
Additional information and application instructions are typically included in back-to-school packets or available on school district websites.
The bottom line
With the cost of living continuing to rise, the updated income limits for school meal programs aim to provide much-needed support for Pennsylvania families. Ensuring students have consistent access to healthy meals is a critical step toward helping them thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Maha mulls ₹10L accident cover, ID for sarpamitras

Nagpur: Sarpamitras — snake rescue volunteers who risk their lives to protect both reptiles and people — may soon get official identity cards and accident insurance cover of up to ₹10 lakh, with the state govt moving to formally recognise them as essential service providers. Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced a proposal to this effect after chairing a high-level meeting at Mantralaya on Wednesday. He said the govt would recommend to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis that sarpamitras be granted 'frontline worker' status under disaster management guidelines. "Sarpamitras play a crucial role in saving lives, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, where snakebite cases are frequent. Their work often puts them at a greater personal risk," Bawankule said. "The govt is positively considering their long-standing demands, including accident insurance, official identification, and institutional recognition," he said. The proposal includes setting up a special online portal to maintain a verified database of registered snake rescuers across the state. Forest department will be tasked with creating a standard operating procedure (SOP) to govern their work, verify credentials through police background checks, and issue official ID cards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The meeting was attended by forest department additional chief secretary Milind Mhaiskar, state wildlife chief conservator M Srinivas Rao, and All India Sarpamitra and Pranimitra Sanghatana president Prof Sambhaji Patil. Bawankule said discussions would soon be held with the chief minister to finalise the accident insurance scheme offering ₹10–15 lakh compensation in case of death or permanent disability while on duty. "These volunteers have been demanding such safeguards for years. Their selfless service deserves institutional respect and financial protection," he said. Wildlife chief Rao, however, reminded that sarpamitras must strictly comply with the Wildlife Protection Act while handling snakes. He added that no rescue work should be carried out without proper training and coordination with the forest department. The forest department has also proposed integrating sarpamitras into the state's official disaster response network, recognising their role during monsoons and flood-related emergencies.

Three killed, 10 injured as tractor overturns in Ramnad

Ramanathapuram: Three women were killed and 10 others injured when a tractor overturned into a dry irrigation tank near Appanur Road in Mudukulathur block in Ramanathapuram on Friday. The victims were identified as P Ponnammal, 62, N Rakki, 45, and K Muniyammal, 65. Police said 13 villagers — 11 women and two men from Koovar Koottam — travelled to Chinnapothukulam village, about 3km away, to buy supplies from the PDS shop. After collecting the goods, the group loaded the sacks into a trailer attached to a tractor driven by Kannan, 45, a resident of Chinnapothukulam. While returning to Koovar Koottam, the tractor reportedly lost balance while passing along the edge of a parched irrigation tank and overturned. The sudden toppling threw the passengers from the trailer into the dry bed, causing severe injuries. Ponnammal, Rakki, and K Muniyammal died on the spot due to head injuries. Ten others, including two men and the driver, sustained injuries. They were initially taken to the Mudukulathur govt hospital for first aid and later referred to the Ramanathapuram Govt Medical College Hospital and Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital for further treatment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Police from Ilanchembur station registered a case and are investigating. Meanwhile, chief minister M K Stalin announced 3 lakh solatium for the kin of the deceased women; and 50,000 each for eight others who were injured. The financial aid will be provided from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund (CMPRF), said the CM in a statement.
