Springboks crush Georgia 55–10 as debutants shine in Mbombela
It wasn't a perfect display, but the South Africans never gave Georgia enough momentum to give them hope of a favourable result. Despite three debutants and a player in his second Test playing in a brand new position, the experience of the South Africans showed. Here are a few talking points from the game, by The Citizen.
Debutants rise to the occasion
Props Boan Venter and Neethling Fouché, and hooker Marnus van der Merwe were all selected in their maiden Test match. During the week, coach Rassie Erasmus said he was happy to back the trio due to the experience of the rest of the pack as well as those on the bench. Captain Siya Kolisi echoed these thoughts, saying the three forwards had 'nothing to fear' because of the support behind them.
The forwards rewarded the faith shown in them. Venter and Van der Merwe both crashed over the line for the Boks' first three tries (two for Van der Merwe). The trio also found momentum in the scrums as the game went on.
By the time they all came off in the 44th mintute, they had showed glimpses of of how they could become a working unit. They each need more game time to tell for sure. Different combinations will also be important.
Cobus Wiese playing at eight
Playing in just his second Test match, Cobus Wiese, who normally features at lock or flank, started for the first time in his professional rugby career at No 8. This came about due to a positional shortage left by the injured Cameron Hanekom, Elrigh Louw and Jean-Luc du Preez, and suspended Jasper Wiese (Cobus' brother). However, the decision was unexpected because specialist eighthman Evan Roos missed out on selection, and Kolisi, who plays No 8 for the Sharks, also wasn't considered.
In the end, Wiese didn't have enough opportunities with ball in hand to make a good assement. Again, he will need more game time in the position to see if it is suited for him. But one wonders if Roos or Kolisi might have done more to make an impact with the few opportunities they had.
Backline on fire
Grant Williams, Canan Moodie and Edwill van der Merwe shone in a game where fast running rugby dominated the kicking. Their gap-taking was exceptional on the night and it was hard to say any one player was better than the others.
Van der Merwe (two tries against Georgia following two against Italy last week) was sublime. Strange as it sounds, Cheslin Kolbe was almost not missed these past two games.
Williams was fantastic dancing through defenders, which led to tries for others, while Moodie both created and scored. Aphelele Fassi, Damian Willemse (one try) and Kurt-Lee Arendse (one try) were also good.
Questions around goal-kicking?
Last week, Manie Libbok missed his first two conversions against Italy but slotted the next five. This time, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu missed his first three conversions against Georgia but slotted his next one, and missed his last before being substituted for Handré Pollard. One kick from five leaves much to be desired for a player of his calibre though to be fair, most were tough kicks.
Pollard, ever dependable, stepped in and nailed all four of his conversions. The Springbok flyhalf also scored a try. Feinberg-Mngomezulu is normally consistant in front on poles, and Libbok might be getting there, but Pollard cannot be the only dependable option going forward.
The two need to step up. Or perhaps is there a chance for Jordan Hendrikse?

Hoërskool De Aar has its first ever Springbok old boy
Loosehead prop Boan Venter made his Springbok debut on Saturday against Georgia at the Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela. Venter, 28, became Springbok #950 and scored a try in South Africa's 55-10 win. Born in Kimberley, Venter also became Hoërskool De Aar's first ever Springbok player. Hoërskool De Aar was founded 101 years ago in 1924. Meanwhile, Venter joined Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouche in making their Springbok debuts against Georgia. Van der Merwe became Springbok #951 and Fouche is Springbok #952. The Test against Georgia had extra significance for Marnus van der Merwe who was born in Mbombela and attended Hoërskool Nelspruit. He became Hoërskool Nelspruit's sixth Springbok after Nico Wegner, Schutte Bekker, Duane Vermeulen, Marnitz Boshoff and team-mate on Saturday, Faf de Klerk, although De Klerk didn't matriculate from the school, but rather moved to Waterkloof. Finally, Neethling Fouche's selection gave Grey College their 49th Springbok of all time as they closed the gap on Paul Roos who lead the way with 56 Springbok old boys. Gayton McKenzie hails Junior Springboks' victory over New Zealand
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has extended his congratulations to the Junior Springboks following their historic triumph at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy. The young Boks clinched a nail-biting 23-15 victory over archrivals New Zealand in Rovigo on Saturday evening, earning South Africa its first U20 world title since 2012. The win saw the team return home unbeaten, with national pride running high. 'Congratulations to the World Champs! Rugby will be dominated by South Africa for decades still,' McKenzie said. The team arrived on home soil on Monday, landing at OR Tambo International Airport. South Africans showed up in their numbers to give the young champions a heroes' welcome. In a statement posted on the Springboks website on Sunday, Junior Springbok head coach Kevin Foote credited the victory to South Africa's trademark fighting spirit and the players' unwavering resolve, particularly in defence. 'Defence is all about character, and there were moments when New Zealand were right on our line, but we held firm. From a coach's perspective, you can't ask for more than that. It was a real South African defensive effort and gees (spirit) that won it for us today,' Foote said. Foote, who took the reins at the end of last year, described the squad as a 'special group of young rugby players', whose growth over the months had been 'incredibly special'. Captain Riley Norton praised his team's composure under pressure and their ability to adapt to the humid Italian conditions. 'The ball was so slippery, and your fundamentals had to be spot on in these conditions, which was tough. There were a few handling errors due to the incredible humidity, and our jerseys were absolutely drenched in sweat, but I think we handled the conditions well. This win is for everyone who supported us back home,' he said. The Junior Boks' win in Italy marks a proud moment in South African sport, echoing their 2012 title win over the same opposition at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. After landing in Johannesburg, the players will return to their respective provincial unions, carrying with them not only gold medals but the hopes of a nation inspired by their success. Boks' ‘V8' that helped power Boan Venter and other debutants against Georgia
The loosehead prop said it was 'a no-brainer' to accept a call-up to the Springboks after also being in the mix to play for Scotland. Springbok debutant Boan Venter said his impressive first appearance in the green and gold was thanks to the power and experience of the other forwards in the pack. Venter made his debut on Saturday in the Boks' 55-10 win over Georgia in Mbombela. It was a completely uncapped front row that started the match, with Venter playing alongside hooker Marnus van der Merwe and tighthead prop Neethling Fouche. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus explained during the build up to the match that they had named a number of experienced players in the pack and on the bench, to balance out their decision to start three uncapped players, and Venter said that made things easier. 'Since the team was announced we definitely felt that support from the whole group. We jokingly call the back five the V8, because you can feel that power coming through,' explained Venter after the match. 'We try to build each other up and be supportive, so it definitely played a massive role in giving us confidence leading into the game.' 'Buzzing to make debut' It was a fantastic debut for Venter and Van der Merwe, as they both scored tries, with the prop crashing over from close range, while the hooker dotted down from two powerful mauls. Venter also said that deciding to play for the Boks was an easy decision, as he also had heavy interest from Scotland, who he would have qualified for next year, having played for franchise side, Edinburgh, over the last four years. Scottish coach Gregor Townsend hailed him as one of the best players in the URC. 'On the performance side I was buzzing to make my debut, and getting a try in there as well (was special). We will obviously reflect on the performance with the review. There is always stuff you can improve on … but just really happy to have gotten on the pitch,' said Venter. 'I think from being a young boy playing rugby, I think it is every South African's dream to play for the Springboks. So when I got that call it was pretty much a no brainer for me.' Playing rugby in Scotland Being picked for the national side for the first time while playing franchise rugby in Scotland made things interesting for Venter, as he had only attended a virtual alignment session, before arriving in the country and going straight into the Bok system. But he was able to fit in well due to a welcoming atmosphere, and admitted that international rugby is certainly a step up from the franchise game. 'It was quite tricky. It was something that we had to navigate. But at the end of the day what counts is that we are here. It was great to just slot into this group, everyone was just so welcoming and helped us hit the floor running. I am just so grateful to be here,' explained Venter. 'I think it's definitely a level up from club rugby. It isn't so different in terms of the processes and stuff like that, but it is a level up. I wouldn't say it surprised me, but it was just so nice to see how big rugby is in South Africa. 'It is quite inspirational to see a whole nation get behind a team, and I think they know how much that support means to the team.'
