Foo Fighters release new single to mark 30th anniversary

Perth Now03-07-2025
Foo Fighters have released a new single to mark the band's 30th anniversary.
Frontman Dave Grohl has taken to the band's official website to share details of Today's Song, their new single, and to reflect on the Foo Fighters' evolution over the years.
The 56-year-old star - who founded the rock band after previously starring in Nirvana - wrote: "This band began almost as an excuse. A reason to hang instruments around our necks and smoke cigarettes with the windows rolled up while listening to our favorite cassettes as we barreled down the interstate towards the next dark, sticky stage.
"We'd all been in the game for a while by then, mind you. We'd all played in other bands, with other people, some that ended much too soon. But we were far from finished. This was a mischievous and maybe necessary detour from maturity, reminding all four of us that our little brains were still wired like an overloaded extension cord, sparking from too many light strands on the Christmas tree. A childish refusal of adulthood, white knuckling the last grasps of adolescence. (Basically, we were just f****** around).
"But, before long it became clear that we were on to something more than just escape. Not necessarily in the musical sense. More of a 'life' thing. This was a new beginning. A change. And it felt right. We had stumbled upon a shiny new toy that came without instructions and with much assembly required. So, we began to build it ever so carefully, piece by piece. (sic)"
Dave also paid a glowing tribute to Taylor Hawkins, who joined the Foo Fighters in 1997, and remained the band's drummer until his death in March 2022, aged 50.
Dave - who recorded the band's eponymous debut album in 1995 - wrote: "Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination. (sic)"

Alison Brie was 'anti-marriage' until she met Dave Franco

Alison Brie's "anti-marriage" stance was a "solid part" of her "identity" until she met Dave Franco. The Mad Men star, 42, fell for fellow actor Dave when they met during Mardi Gras in New Orleans and they went on to tie the knot in 2017 - and Alison now admits meeting her partner changed her mind about marriage because she'd previously vowed never to walk down the aisle. She told The Sunday Times newspaper: "Being anti-marriage was once a solid part of my identity and I vowed it would never get in the way of my creative pursuits. "My parents are wonderful but they divorced and I didn't have many examples of happily married adults. "Dave flipped some kind of switch in me. I suddenly felt this deep pull to make a commitment. I know it's only rings and a bit of paper but you're telling the world that this matters. We're in for the long haul." Alison also insisted she doesn't want to have children because she's kept busy by the couple's two cats, but she's not ruling anything out. She added: "In the past I said I didn't want to have kids and that's still the case. My career is paramount. "Anyway, we have two new cats ... and they are our babies. But, hey, I'm only 42. Never say never." Dave proposed during a trip to Big Sur in California and he put a lot of effort in to make sure the moment was just right - even wearing a Mardi Gras mask from their first meeting in New Orleans. He told Variety: "We were going to Big Sur, one of our favourite places on Earth. I decided I was going to do it there ... "The day before the trip, I figured I should have a placeholder ring so I could at least put something on her finger. "I went to an antiques store down the street from us and got what I thought was a cool, old ring. "We first met at Mardi Gras in New Orleans years ago, and Alison had this silver mask on her head the entire weekend. I had written my phone number on the mask, and at the end of the trip, I took it and hid it. She didn't know I'd kept the mask all these years." Alison continued: "He calls me out onto the patio. I turn around and Dave's on one knee in a Zorro mask, holding a weird box with an old rock in it. I had no idea what was going on."

TAINTED: burlesque show merges Victorian-era tales with 90s grunge sound

A Victorian-style tragedy full of magic, slapstick, pole dance, burlesque and fire dance, all set to a 90s grunge soundtrack is coming to Sun Street Studios. Sophie Cook and the Wollombi Burlesque Troupe are bringing TAINTED - A Burlesque Tragic Opera to Maitland for one night only on Friday, August 29. Inspired by Victorian stories and English films, TAINTED covers everything from plague and pestilence to age and love, with live 90s grunge music from the likes of Nirvana and Soundgarden. Sophie, who wrote and produced the show, and plays vaudevillian Legs 11.11, said it's is very comedic but also has depth. Going through menopause has impacted Sophie's life and the way she has written the show. "There's just so many different things that I'm taking on from writing to producing, to performing, and it does seem a lot harder now that I'm in this menopause," she said. "It is something that we all go through and even though it's not very sexy, it's a big shift in your life and I'm trying to come to terms with that it's a really empowering time, I've heard women say that they do their very best work when they sort of push into this new phase." Sophie said this has led her to embracing playing more of a matriarchal role in this show, rather than the siren she's known for. "I'm also just doing those gross things on stage that I probably wouldn't have done when I was 25, and I'm still ballsy enough to take off some layers of clothing, but I guess in this particular act... she is celebrating her body but she's also looking in the mirror and is kind of not happy with her body," she said. "I'm trying to bring in the humour that everybody feels as they get older, whereas if I was 25 I wouldn't even be considering putting a thread like that in my own work." TAINTED will be Sophie's fifth show in Maitland, and she said while it's a huge undertaking, she doesn't know what she'd do without the shows and the creative process. "It's going to be a really fun night out and the band is amazing, they've got some really incredible performers so it's something different," she said. "I don't think you [usually] get a chance to listen to much grunge music, unless you're looking for it." Dave Franco and Alison Brie 'handed out weed pens at party'

Dave Franco and Alison Brie handed out "weed pens" at their wedding party. The 40-year-old actor and Alison, 42, tied the knot in 2017, and Dave has recalled proposing to the brunette beauty during a trip to Big Sur in California. He told Variety: "We were going to Big Sur, one of our favourite places on Earth. I decided I was going to do it there. And I didn't have the ring." Alison then said: "He knew that I wanted our friend Irene Neuwirth to design my ring." Dave put a lot of time and thought into his proposal. The actor shared: "The day before the trip, I figured I should have a placeholder ring so I could at least put something on her finger. I went to an antiques store down the street from us and got what I thought was a cool, old ring. I had no idea what was going on." The Hollywood duo wanted to have a small, lowkey wedding ceremony, but they still decided to throw a party with their friends. Dave shared: "We wanted people to let loose and go crazy. Much more than they did. We were handing out weed pens, which just led to everyone bringing home multiple to-go pizzas." Dave and Alison always had a clear idea of what they wanted their wedding day to look like. And the actor admits that it was one of the best days of their lives. He said: "Neither of us were ever big into weddings. Like, this was not a super important thing to us. At the end of the day, we did it exactly how we wanted. In a cheesy way, that ended up being one of the best days of our lives."
