Microsoft releases urgent fix for Sharepoint vulnerability being used in global cyberattacks
NEW YORK (AP) — Microsoft has issued an emergency fix to close off a vulnerability in Microsoft's SharePoint software that hackers have exploited to carry out widespread attacks on businesses and at least some federal agencies. The company issued an alert to customers Saturday saying it was aware of the zero-day exploit — where hackers take advantage of a previously unknown vulnerability — being used to conduct attacks and that it was working to patch the issue. Microsoft updated its guidance Sunday with instructions to fix the problem for SharePoint Server 2019 and SharePoint Server Subscription Edition. Engineers were still working on a fix for the older SharePoint Server 2016 software. Cyber criminals often use zero-day exploits to steal sensitive data and passwords. The vulnerability also could allow hackers to access services connected to SharePoint, including OneDrive and Teams. The company said in its blog post that it discovered at least dozens of systems were compromised around the world. Security engineers stated the attacks occurred in waves on July 18 and 19. Although the scope of the attack is still being assessed, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned that the impact could be widespread and recommended that any servers impacted by the exploit should be disconnected from the internet until they are patched. One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning Helps Homeowners Maximize Smart Thermostat Benefits This Summer
Expert Tips to Beat the Heat and Lower Energy Bills COLUMBIA, Md., July 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning wants to help homeowners take control of their comfort and energy costs this summer. With the increasing availability of smart thermostats and a few expert tips on how to maximize their features, it's possible to keep homes cool and efficient even during heat waves. "When used correctly, smart thermostats do more than adjust the temperature. They can help save energy, reduce cooling bills and learn your home's patterns for maximum comfort," said Richie Drew, vice president of operations at One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning. Smart thermostats are quickly becoming the preferred choice for energy-conscious homeowners, whether you are replacing an entire HVAC system or just opting for an upgraded thermostat. Here's why: Lower Energy Bills – Traditional thermostats often waste energy by running the HVAC system constantly, even when no one's home. Smart thermostats let you program schedules or adjust settings remotely via a mobile app to only cool (or heat) your home when needed. Using less energy equates to paying less each month for electricity bills. Track and Improve Energy Use – Many smart thermostats monitor HVAC usage patterns and alert you when energy consumption spikes. With tips and insights, you can make smarter choices to keep costs down. Smarter, Simpler Comfort – With motion sensors and learning technology, smart thermostats adapt to your family's routines. Some even turn on automatically when you return home and adjust settings to personal preferences over time. One innovative device that is revolutionizing home climate controls is the Nuve Smart Thermostat. Its user-friendly mobile app allows temperature adjustments from anywhere, while other standout features include direct messaging for personalized advice and smart scheduling that learns your routines. One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning offers expert installation to ensure homeowners get the most out of their new smart thermostats, as well as a variety of financing options that can provide manageable monthly payments, flexible financing terms and competitive interest rates. How this tech CEO competes with Meta's AI talent spending spree
Listen and subscribe to Opening Bid on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. It's almost impossible to compete with the bottomless wallet of Mark Zuckerberg's Meta (META) when it comes to recruiting AI talent. So smaller companies have to build the talent themselves, said Nextdoor (KIND) co-founder and CEO Nirav Tolia. "People are the real asset," Tolia said in a new episode of Yahoo Finance's Opening Bid Unfiltered podcast (watch above; listen below). "It's not the code. It's not the product itself. It's the brains behind this." "That means teaching ourselves to be great at AI," Tolia continued. "We don't have the benefit of having all that cash and picking up something off the shelf or someone off the shelf who has that expertise. We have to build it internally. Ultimately, I think that's a lot more durable and we really have no choice." This embedded content is not available in your region. Zuckerberg is having a summer to remember, including poaching top artificial intelligence talent such as Scale AI's Alexandr Wang with multimillion-dollar paychecks. Wang now leads Meta's new superintelligence lab. Just last week, Meta reportedly lured AI researchers Mark Lee and Tom Gunter from Apple (AAPL) to join the superintelligence team. "AI may be one of the first big platform shifts where there is true advantage flowing to the incumbents versus the startups," Tolia said. "But I don't think about that. I think about what can we do at Nextdoor to use the power of AI to build a better product." Digital turnarounds like the one Tolia is trying to pull off take time and great talent, and they are far from guaranteed in a world dominated by Big Tech and disruptors like OpenAI ( Tolia co-founded social media platform Nextdoor in 2008 and led the company until 2018. The platform seeks to keep neighborhoods connected with updates on local happenings. Watch more from the Opening Bid podcast Reebok founder on Trump tariffs: It's virtually impossible to make sneakers in US Why the CEO of the world's large sovereign wealth fund is worried about rising US debt NFL great Chad Johnson on the unusual way he saved money 'After running the company for almost nine years, I was really tired and burned out,' Tolia said of his decision to leave. 'And I think this happens to a lot of CEOs. You're in the grind, you're in the middle of a deep, dark tunnel. You don't know if you're ever going to get out. And it's difficult to have perspective.' He returned to the company as CEO in May 2024 and found the social media platform was struggling to grow, with a weak product and a sliding stock. Tolia has since refocused the organization on the user experience with initial signs of success in increasing weekly average users. The company relaunched its app earlier this month, with an emphasis on local news and better engagement. Despite the efforts, Nextdoor's market cap has dwindled from $4.3 billion at the time of its SPAC IPO in 2021 to $700 million or so today. Shares are down 32% over the past year. Each week, I sit down for insight-filled conversations and chats with the biggest names in business and markets on Opening Bid Unfiltered.
