Indian FM says attackers ‘must face justice'
India's foreign minister said yesterday that those who planned and carried out an attack in Kashmir last week that left 26 men dead 'must be brought to justice'.
New Delhi blames Pakistan for the gun attack on civilians at the tourist site of Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22.
'Its perpetrators, backers and planners must be brought to justice,' India's top diplomat Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said in a statement following a conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday evening in which they discussed the attack.
Rubio also spoke to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and in a US readout of the call, told Sharif of the 'need to condemn the terror attack' in Kashmir.
Indian and Pakistani soldiers fired at each other overnight along the Line of Control, the de facto border in contested Kashmir, the Indian army said.
It was a seventh straight night gunfire was reported by India.
'During the night... Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small-arms fire across the Line of Control opposite Kupwara, Uri and Akhnoor,' the army said in a statement.
'These were responded proportionately by the Indian Army.' There were no reported casualties and there was no immediate confirmation from Pakistan.
Indian police have issued wanted posters for three men accused of carrying out the Kashmir attack -- two Pakistanis and an Indian -- who they say are members of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba group, a UN-designated terrorist organisation.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the military 'complete operational freedom'.

Tragedy struck an Indian expat family enjoying the Eid Al Adha holidays in Dubai as one of the family members allegedly died during a fun scuba diving session on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Issac Paul Olakkengil, a 29-year-old civil engineer. He reportedly suffered a heart attack after he could not breathe properly, according to his family. Pyarilos Davis, who is among the relatives helping the bereaved family with paper works, told Gulf News that Issac and his wife Reshma, along with Issac's younger brother Ivin, had gone to Jumeirah Beach for the scuba diving session. He said the incident took place when the trio were getting trained in a designated training area during the session. 'It seems they were getting trained for scuba diving, and apparently, he [Issac] couldn't breathe properly and moved away from the pack,' said Pyarilos.'So, everyone panicked and was impacted under water. I was told Reshma was rescued to the shore first, followed by the other two.' Issac was rushed to a hospital but could not be saved. Meanwhile, he said, Ivin also collapsed on reaching the hospital and is currently under observation. 'He is out of danger,' said Pyarilos. He said the family is cooperating with the police, who have seized the equipment used in the scuba diving session as part of their investigation into the case. 'We are working with the authorities to repatriate his mortal remains after we receive the necessary legal documents,' said Pyarilos. Ivin had not been informed about his only brother's passing till Saturday evening, he said. 'All of them are engineers. While Issac and Reshma are in Dubai, Ivin is based in Abu Dhabi. Ivin's friends just told me they are concerned about breaking this heart-wrenching news to him, as the brothers shared a strong bond,' said Pyarilos. Gulf News has reached out to Dubai Police for a comment.

Modi opens Kashmir rail link
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first visit to Kashmir yesterday since a conflict with arch-rival Pakistan, opening a strategic railway line to the region he called 'the crown jewel of India'. Modi launched a string of projects worth billions of dollars for the northern territory. Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan fought a four-day conflict last month, their worst standoff since 1999, before a ceasefire was agreed on May 10. 'Pakistan will never forget... its shameful loss,' the premier told crowds a month since India launched strikes on its neighbour after an attack on tourists in Kashmir. 'Friends, today's event is a grand festival of India's unity and firm resolve,' Modi said after striding across the soaring bridge to formally launch it for rail traffic. 'This is a symbol and celebration of rising India,' he said of the Chenab Bridge which connects two mountains. The Chenab span is the 'world's highest railway arch bridge', sitting 359 metres (1,117 feet) above a river. While several road and pipeline bridges are higher, Guinness World Records confirmed that Chenab trumps the previous highest railway bridge, the Najiehe in China. Modi called it 'an extraordinary feat of architecture' that 'will improve connectivity' by providing the first rail link from the Indian plains up to mountainous Kashmir. With 36 tunnels and 943 bridges, the new railway runs for 272 kilometres (169 miles) and connects Udhampur, Srinagar and Baramulla. It is expected to halve the travel time between the town of Katra in the Hindu-majority Jammu region and Srinagar, the main city in Kashmir, to around three hours. The new route will facilitate the movement of people and goods, as well as troops, that was previously possible only via treacherous mountain roads and by air.
