Ten more SANDF members arrested in Hawks officer murder case
Ten additional South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a senior official from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the Hawks.
The ten additional suspects were arrested on Monday after they handed themselves over to the Hawks investigating officers in Johannesburg.
This comes after two members were arrested at separate locations on Sunday night by members of the Johannesburg branch of the Hawks and assisting tactical units.
10 more SANDF members handed themselves over to Hawks
The suspects are believed to be linked to the 2023 murder of Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa.
Mathipa was working for the Hawks' Crime Against the State division when he was shot while driving along the N1 near Hammanskraal on 6 August 2023.

'Following the shooting, Mathipa's vehicle lost control and veered into a ditch,' confirmed Hawks' spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo.
Singo said Mathipa was on duty conducting an investigation at the time of his death.
All ten additional suspects — including the two arrested on Sunday — appeared before the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday afternoon to face charges of murder and kidnapping.
Case postponed to 1 July
The court postponed the case against the 12 officials to 1 July for a formal bail application. According to the Hawks, the court order prohibits the disclosure of the accused's identities.
Investigators have also linked the suspects to the kidnapping of two male foreign nationals at a mall in Midrand on 29 December 2025.

2nd high-profile incident
The arrests are the second high-profile incident involving military members this past weekend.
On Saturday, two SANDF soldiers were stabbed to death by a colleague at the Macadamia military base near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga.
'The circumstances surrounding the incident remain the subject of ongoing inquiry, and further details will be communicated once officially verified,' stated SANDF spokesperson Prince Tshabalala.
'We appeal to the public and media to allow the investigative processes to unfold without speculation and to respect the dignity and privacy of the affected families during this difficult time,' he advised.

Former attorney accused of theft, fraud released on R10,000 bail
Former attorney Catherine Wilheminah Papenfus appeared in the Johannesburg specialised commercial crimes court on Thursday on theft and fraud charges. Papenfus, 54, was arrested in Hermanus in the Western Cape on Saturday and was released on bail of R10,000. Between September 2010 and July 2013, Papenfus, who was an admitted attorney and conveyancer, allegedly received instructions from clients for legal assistance. 'The clients, intending to purchase properties, paid money into the attorney's trust account,' Hawks spokesperson W/O Thatohatsi Mavimbela said. 'However the suspect failed to pay the sellers and did not refund the clients.' When the clients failed to trace the attorney they lodged complaints with the Fidelity Fund for a refund and Papenfus was struck off the roll of attorneys. Her case was postponed to September 16.

Murder suspect arrested after high-speed chase ends in collision near mall in Alexandra A 39-year-old suspect, wanted in connection with a November 2024 murder in Florida, Gauteng, was arrested yesterday after a high-speed police chase ended in a multi-vehicle collision at the London Road off-ramp near Alex Mall, injuring four people and disrupting traffic in the area. Alex News reports that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) revealed that that the suspect is also linked to nine additional cases, including eight robberies and a murder, in various Johannesburg suburbs. According to the Hawks, the suspect fled when they attempted to stop his vehicle while executing a bench warrant – an arrest warrant issued by the court for failing to appear as required for the November 2024 murder. 'When they tried to pull the vehicle over, the suspect's vehicle accelerated. A high-speed chase ensued,' the Hawks' statement read. The suspect was pursued by a multi-disciplinary law enforcement team comprising of the Hawks' Gauteng Serious Organised Crime Investigation's tracing team and SAPS Counter Intelligence, among others. 'At the intersection of the London Road off-ramp, the suspect's VW Polo collided with a Mazda, as well as Hyundai bakkie.' The Hawks further shared that the suspect's passenger is also a person of interest. However, the statement did not divulge any information about the passenger's connection to any crime or investigation. The collision prompted the closure of London Road, from Alex Mall towards the N3, with law enforcement officials managing the scene. A subsequent search of the suspect's residence, by other law enforcement officials, led to the recovery of an unlicensed 9mm firearm and two vehicles, a blue VW and a blue Renault, linked to cases in Germiston and Sandton.
