In a tragic turn of events, an Indian student named Tanya Tyagi, studying at the University of Calgary in Canada, was found dead under suspicious conditions, according to a statement released by the Consulate General of India in Vancouver on Thursday (June 19).
The consulate expressed its condolences to the family and stated, 'We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at the University of Calgary.'

'We discussed the evolving situation [referring to the Iran-Israel military conflict] and initially both sides tried to calm each other down saying things will be fine. However, before disconnecting the call, my daughter appealed to us to take her out of Qom city [in north central Iran] and bring her to India,' said Ms. Raza. Mr. Raza is a driver with the Raipur Central Jail administration, and the family lives in the staff accommodation within the jail campus. He said that in 2017, Ms. Aiman got married to Ejaz Zaidi from Damoh in Madhya Pradesh who is enrolled in a religious education programme, 'Maulviyat', in Iran. The following year, Ms. Aiman too moved to Iran and has been living there ever since. After her last conversation with her daughter, Ms. Raza tried to call them again but to no avail. Based on what they have heard on TV news and other media, the couple feels there could be an internet shutdown in the area where Ms. Aiman's family resides alongside several other Indian families. Mr. Ejaz was scheduled to fly to India for Muharram festival on June 13, the day Israel launched an attack on Iran triggering the conflict. His flight was cancelled as a result, they recalled. While the overall safety of the family remains a primary concern, the couple is also worried because of the worsening thyroid condition of their daughter and wonder whether she would receive any medical assistance if needed in this state of emergency. So far they haven't made any formal request to the authorities but said they might do so if Ms. Aiman remains incommunicado.

CBI brings back fugitive Moideenabba Ummer Beary from UAE in fake currency case
NEW DELHI: In a significant breakthrough after over a decade, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully facilitated the return of Moideenabba Ummer Beary, who was wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a high-profile fake currency case, from the United Arab Emirates, officials said on Friday. Beary landed in Mumbai on Friday as a deportee, they said, adding that the International Police Cooperation Unit (IPCU) of the CBI, in close coordination with the National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abu Dhabi, ensured his return through INTERPOL channels. 'Beary had been on the run for over a decade and was the subject of a Red Notice issued by INTERPOL at the request of the NIA since December 2013. The NIA had registered a case against him at its Kochi branch for allegedly procuring high-quality Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) from Dubai and smuggling them into India via Sharjah, with the consignment ultimately reaching Bengaluru,' a senior CBI official said. The NIA, in its charge sheet in connection with the case, has accused him of counterfeiting Indian currency, cheating, and criminal conspiracy. The CBI had been tracking Beary's movements and successfully geo-located him in the UAE with assistance from INTERPOL's global network, the officials said, adding that following his arrest in the UAE, a formal extradition request was processed through the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs. Red Notices, circulated globally by INTERPOL, play a critical role in locating and apprehending fugitives. The CBI, as India's designated INTERPOL liaison (NCB-India), has been instrumental in returning over 100 wanted individuals to India in recent years through its dedicated platform, BHARATPOL.

Delhi Court Allows Extradition Of Man For Trial In Rape Case In Scotland
New Delhi: A Delhi Court has allowed the extradition of a fugitive to stand trial in Scotland for sexual assault, rape and communicating indecently. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Pranav Joshi was hearing the matter over the Centre's December 2024 order appointing and requesting the court to inquire into the extradition request by determining whether a prima facie case was made out against the fugitive criminal (FC) Naijil Paul. In an order dated June 9, the court said, "Union of India is requested to extradite the FC Naijil Paul to the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland for standing trial of the indictment charges against the FC before the High Court of Judiciary at Glasgow, Scotland through diplomatic channel." Till formalities of extradition were complete, Paul would remain in Tihar prison, it added. To avoid criminal prosecution in the UK, Paul fled to India but was arrested from Kochi in Kerala and brought to the national capital. According to the Centre's order, the United Kingdom government submitted a request for Paul's extradition, who was "wanted to stand trial in connection with the offences allegedly committed in Scotland" for sexual assault, communicating indecently among other offences. "Similar conduct under Indian laws amount to offence under Section 63 (rape), Section 74 (sexual assault), Section 75 (sexual harassment), Section 79 (word, gesture to act to outrage the modesty of a woman) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita which are punishable with more than one year imprisonment," it said.
