The legal industry, historically cautious about adopting disruptive technologies, is now at an AI-powered tipping point. Focusing on this transformation is LexisNexis Legal & Professional, harnessing artificial intelligence to redefine how lawyers perform their daily work. Their latest innovation, Protégé, a generative and agentic AI-powered legal assistant, aims to deliver efficiency, precision, and personalized legal workflows to firms around the globe.
According to Jeff Reihl, EVP and Chief Technology Officer at LexisNexis Legal & Professional, the push toward AI was a natural evolution for the industry. "The work lawyers do lends itself perfectly to generative AI: drafting documents, conversational search to refine a question, and more," Reihl notes. "AI lends itself extraordinarily well to legal work."
The unique value proposition of LexisNexis lies in its proprietary content and technology infrastructure. LexisNexis utilizes a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) platform, grounding its large language models (LLMs) in an extensive database of over 160 billion documents, growing daily by 1.6 million new records. This approach ensures the accuracy, relevance, verifiability, and timeliness crucial to legal work.
"A key differentiator for us is our proprietary content," explains Reihl. "We have an unmatched repository—over 160 billion documents and records, with 1.6 million new documents added daily from more than 50,000 sources.' He continues, 'we use a multi-model approach in which we select the best AI model for each legal use case, and a proprietary RAG platform that grounds answers in our repository of legal content for high-quality answers with validated citations. On top of that, we conduct model fine-tuning to ensure high performance of domain-specific, personalized LLMs."
The company works closely with industry leaders like AWS, Microsoft, Anthropic, Mistral, and OpenAI to develop AI models that cater specifically to the legal sector, finely tuned to each use case.
Protégé doesn't just respond to requests, it anticipates lawyers' next moves. "The vision behind Protégé is to personalize the AI experience," says Reihl. "Not every lawyer works the same way. Instead of putting the burden on the end user, Protégé will walk the user through their entire workflow and anticipate what they'll want to do."
Early adopters are already reporting impressive results, according to the company. LexisNexis claims that law firms employing Protégé have seen marked improvements not just in productivity but also in the quality and comprehensiveness of legal research and document drafting. For LexisNexis, the AI advantage goes deeper than efficiency. It aims to reshape the very way lawyers approach their work.
Legal professionals have long hesitated in embracing AI, partly due to early versions that were overly hyped yet underwhelming. LexisNexis tackles these hurdles by emphasizing security, compliance, and ethical AI development with robust human oversight.
As Reihl emphasizes, "Trustworthiness remains a barrier due to security, confidentiality, hallucination, and recency risks in public LLMs—all serious issues for lawyers. We address these issues through our approach to AI development which prioritizes security, highest-quality answers, and performance. Our approach includes enterprise-grade security, compliance, and privacy, as well as a process grounded in responsible AI development that relies on human oversight."
To address issues of ethical and responsible use of AI, LexisNexis Legal & Professional is a part of RELX, and have built their solutions in line with the RELX Responsible AI Principles.
Reihl sends a clear message to firms still hesitant to embrace AI: "Waiting to embrace AI means falling behind because you won't be as effective as your competition or peers who are already using these tools. The time to invest in AI is now."
Indeed, other industries provide cautionary tales. Firms slow to adopt transformative technology often lose competitive ground, as evidenced by Kodak's failure to adapt to digital photography or Blockbuster's dismissal of streaming services.
Other legacy businesses can take lessons from LexisNexis' approach: prioritizing customer needs, adopting a culture of experimentation, and ensuring organizational agility to quickly embrace emerging technologies. Reihl suggests, 'You can start small by experimenting with some use cases and expand as you learn the benefits.'
Looking five years ahead, Reihl envisions a landscape where every lawyer will benefit from a personalized AI assistant akin to Protégé. "Our vision is that every legal professional worldwide will have an AI assistant that is highly personalized to them," he explains. "Autonomous agents will perform work in the background, providing legal professionals with additional information they need even when they are not actively working."
Despite AI's expansive role, Reihl stresses it won't replace the fundamentally human nature of law. "Law is fundamentally a human system, grounded in values, interpretation, and public trust. AI can assist legal professionals, but it won't replace the human responsibility at the heart of justice."

Unlock Your Full Potential In 3 Steps With The Superpower System

Most people live far below their potential. They have strengths they never use, higher versions of themselves they rarely access, and successful patterns they never replicate. The gap between who they are and who they could be grows wider every year. Eventually they look back with the heaviest regret of all: they never fully achieved what they were capable of. I figured this out after founding my social media agency at 22 and selling it ten years later. The success came from understanding the system that unlocks potential in every ambitious professional. It's a framework I've refined that turns ordinary people into extraordinary performers and I call it the Superpower System. Three overlapping circles that, when activated together, create unstoppable momentum for anything you pursue. The Superpower System approach to personal development People looking to improve read random books, try disconnected strategies, and jump between whatever is trending. This creates temporary motivation but no lasting change. Most never build a coherent system that uses their natural advantages. The Superpower System targets three areas that create exponential results when they work together. Everyone has unique advantages. Skills, characteristics, knowledge, networks, physical attributes. These are your ace cards. The assets at your disposal that others might not have. Finding and using yours unlocks your next level. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Take stock of what you've got. Make a list. Be brutally honest. Maybe you have specialized knowledge from a previous career. Perhaps you have a network of high-profile contacts. Or natural physical attributes you can maximize. Emphasise using your ace cards over working on your weaknesses. Don't search for the struggle, find the flow. The biggest mistake is leaving your best cards unplayed. Stop hiding your advantages or pretending they don't exist. If you've got something that gives you an edge, just play it. All in. Leverage them relentlessly in service of your goals. We all have different versions of ourselves that show up in different situations. The second circle in the Superpower System focuses on consistently accessing your highest self. The version of you that's confident, present, and capable. For me, this is my lion state versus my Pomeranian puppy lower self. The lion is decisive, bold, and clear-headed. The puppy is reactive, distracted, and seeks validation. Both exist within me, but I choose which one shows up. Start noticing the conditions that bring out your best. Is it certain environments? Specific people? Particular challenges? Create more of those conditions deliberately. Then study the triggers that pull you into your lower self. Develop strategies to catch these patterns before they take over. Some people succeed once and never again. Others turn everything they touch into gold. The difference is a repeatable success system. Patterns that, when followed consistently, lead to predictable outcomes. Everyone's personal success system is different. My success system includes setting an intention, visualizing it coming true, chatting to people who have actually achieved the thing, then making the plan and working towards it for 90 minutes of every day. Then just never giving up. Following this system is behind everything I've ever achieved in life and sport. Your success system will look completely different. Maybe you thrive on variety and need to build that into your approach. Perhaps you work best in intense bursts followed by recovery. A friend throws a party for his professional contacts every time he wants to solve a problem. Having them there brings accountability and ideas. The specifics don't matter as much as finding what works for you. Find and use your Superpower System, watch what happens The Superpower System works because it focuses on what's already inside you. Play your ace cards, become your best self, and find your success system. When these three circles overlap, everything changes. You create results that seem magical to others but are simply systematic to you. Think about when you last felt truly in flow. You were drawing on your natural advantages, showing up as your best self, and using systems that work for you. This state can become your default. Identify an advantage you're not fully utilizing. Notice a trigger that pulls you into your lower self. Document a pattern that's led to previous success. Your full potential is waiting to be unlocked.

Amazon's big investment in its Kuiper internet satellite business is proving to be a smart bet

Amazon 's Project Kuiper has not made a dime yet. But recent updates boost our confidence that the ambitious satellite internet initiative could soon be a new cog in the tech giant's money-making machine. "There's so much to like here" with Amazon, Jim Cramer said in the wake of its second-quarter earnings report . "Right now, we have [Amazon Web Services], advertising, and then we have retail. I think two years from now, we're also going to have Amazon Home and Kuiper." Perhaps it's not surprising that Amazon, founded by Jeff Bezos, is going after a market now dominated by Starlink and SpaceX, which was founded by his commercial space competitor, Elon Musk. Starlink launched its first satellites in 2019, the same year that Amazon signaled its intention to build a constellation of satellites to provide internet service. After years of development, Kuiper's first full deployment was earlier this year and they've continued since then, including on Monday. The power of these types of satellites has been on display during Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine. In a country devastated by war, Starlink has been used to provide internet in Ukraine. Starlink has also been used in the U.S. to help coordinate natural disaster relief efforts, including last month's deadly floods in Texas. Any rivalry between the billionaire space cowboys aside, delivering broadband via satellite to 400 million to 500 million households worldwide without access to high-speed internet is big business. The kicker for Amazon? Getting new people and businesses connected to the internet in hard-to-reach places gives the company a chance to bring new customers to its Prime ecosystem and its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. "Amazon is as strong as it's ever been," Jim added. Despite delivering a better-than-expected top and bottom line, Amazon shares fell more than 8% the day after earnings on Aug. 1. The decline stemmed from a modest revenue beat from AWS and mixed third-quarter guidance. Jim called the drop a buying opportunity for investors. Shares have recovered some of their losses since then. Beyond the headlines were promising developments for Kuiper. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said on the earnings call that Kuiper has already signed enterprise and government contracts, even though it has not yet launched commercially. That's expected to happen later this year or early 2026. The company plans to launch a network of over 3,000 satellites into low Earth orbit. The rollout is happening fast. After launching its first satellites in April, Kuiper sent up its third batch in mid-July — using rival SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket to carry 24 Kuiper satellites into orbit. Additional satellites were sent up Monday morning after some weather-related launch delays, bringing the size of Amazon's constellation above 100. Kuiper must have 1,600 satellites in orbit by the end of July 2026 to meet a deadline set by the Federal Communications Commission. Starlink currently leads the satellite internet market with roughly 8,000 satellites and about 5 million users globally. Still, Jim sees Kuiper as a formidable challenger, predicting that "Kuiper is going to rival Starlink." Some on Wall Street agree the venture could strengthen Amazon's so-called flywheel. "Kuiper will be a compelling offering and easy add for consumers (Prime), enterprises (AWS), and governments," BMO Capital Markets wrote in a recent note, echoing Jim's analysis. To be sure, analysts see the end of 2027 as the earliest Amazon could see any meaningful revenue contribution from Kuiper. With that long runway comes a high price tag. Kuiper requires significant upfront capital investment to scale its network and acquire customers. That cash burn, which is estimated to total more than $10 billion , can be seen by investors as affecting Amazon's profitability. While that may be the case in the near term, Jassy previously said that Kuiper "has really good return on invested capital." In a "Mad Money" interview in late June, Jassy likened Kuiper to having "a lot of the same financial characteristics as AWS," which Amazon has built into the world's largest cloud provider by revenue. While new ventures carry risk, we take comfort in Amazon's proven track record in taking self-started internal ventures and turning them into thriving businesses. AWS was one for sure, but Amazon also successfully launched Kindle, which disrupted the publishing and eBook industries. Prime Video is another example, and the list goes on and on. So, Kuiper might be costly upfront, but Amazon has shown it can manage capital efficiency and scale with discipline. Following its latest earnings report and an upbeat update on Kuiper, we reiterated our buy-equivalent 1 rating on Amazon stock and increased our price target to $250 from $240.
