Boy, 17, is found dead in brush after road trip with uncle as police make arrest

Daily Mail13-07-2025
A man with a 'significant' criminal history has been arrested after being accused of murdering his teenage nephew and leaving his body on the side of a road.
Victor 'Jerry' Carver III was arrested in Tennessee on a manslaughter charge on Monday, two days after checking 17-year-old Caden Cantrelle out of the Tennessee Department of Children's Services (DCS) on July 5 with permission.
The two then illegally drove to rural Mississippi, where the boy's body was found deep in a deep ditch off a road in Jasper County on Monday.
Cops made the discovery after receiving a tip from the boy's father that his phone last 'pinged' in Mississippi. He had tracking software installed on his son's phone.
DCS contacted him after the allotted time of the preapproved visit had expired, cops said. Cantrelle's phone last pinged Sunday in the Jasper area before being found the following afternoon.
Carver III, 37, is now facing manslaughter charges as a result. He was cuffed in Tennessee after deputies there found him asleep inside his home with the car used for the 'trip' parked outside.
Those charges could be upgraded as evidence is collected, officials said this week .
The suspect also has a criminal history in the state dating back nearly 20 years, according to Nashville NBC affiliate WSMV. He was still allowed to check the boy out, for what was proposed as an innocent road trip to Louisiana to visit family.
At some point on the way back, though, the two got into an argument, investigators were told.
It remains unclear what Cantrelle's father and DCS' relationship was regarding Cantrelle's care.
Deputies came across Cantrelle's body on the edge of a gully overgrown with vines.
Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson recalled to Law&Crime on Friday how, after driving to the location where the phone's activity had been last recorded with four of his deputies, he immediately 'suspected foul play.'
The cops then learned who Cantrelle was, before contacting the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in Tennessee.
A warrant was subsequently secured for Carver's arrest. The suspect admitted to leaving his nephew on the side of the road, cops said.
The uncle has not admitted to harming his nephew, however, only conceding there was some sort of argument. He never contacted authorities in either state about his nephew, cops said.
Carver, moreover, has a criminal history dating back to 2007, records reviewed by WSMV revealed. Among those is record of a guilty plea for attempted aggravated assault, the outlet reported.
The circumstances of that alleged incident are still unclear.
Also unclear is the living situation that saw the victim left with CPS in the first place -and how state officials failed to see the danger of leaving the boy with someone with a criminal record such as the suspect's.
Stacie Odeneal, a certified child welfare law specialist who had been tasked with taking care of the teen during his stay, admitted to WSMV: 'We as a system prevented him from having a chance.'
'If it'd been presented to me, if it'd been presented to a judge, and we knew the criminal history, and I think many of us knew this uncle had a significant criminal history, we would have been opposed to giving this level of access to this child,' she added.
She called Cantrelle's case 'Worst outcome [she's] seen' in 15 years of CPS work, while a statement from Tennessee DCS expressed 'sadness' over the death.
'DCS has taken immediate steps to engage with our law enforcement partners as they conduct a criminal investigation,' the agency added in a statement.
'[T]he employees involved are currently on leave as the department continues to assess its established policy and the application of those policies in this particular case.'
The criminal investigation into Cantrelle's death, meanwhile, remains ongoing.

Scorned lover who ignited county's worst wildfire in HISTORY to hide the body of woman he murdered is jailed

A jealous lover has been jailed for life after a fire he lit to cover up a woman's murder grew to a massive wildfire that killed two more people. Victor Serriteno, 33, pleaded guilty to three counts of murder and arson charges and must stay behind bars at least 73 years. He met Priscilla Castro, 22, online and she came to visit him in Vacaville, California, on August 16, 2020, and was last seen at 5.49pm in her car. The next time anyone saw her was on September 2 in Putah Creek Wildlife Area, ground zero for one of the worst wildfires in the region's history. Castro's body was burned beyond recognition, but her angel pendant survived and led to her body being identified and Serriteno arrested. Serriteno never explained how and why he killed Castro, but admitted to setting fire to her body on August 18 to destroy the evidence. The fire spread and became the Markley Fire, which merged with other wildfires in the LNU Lightning Complex and claimed six lives and destroyed 1,500 buildings. Douglas Mai, 82, and Leon 'James' Bone, 64, were found dead in their homes in Solano County, unable to escape the blaze traced back to Serriteno's arson. An eight-month investigation pinned their deaths on him, and he was slapped with two more murder charges and two counts of arson. Serriteno's sentencing in Solano County Superior Court followed emotional testimony from Castro's family, Mai and Bone's loved ones, and residents who barely escaped the fire and lost everything. 'She wanted to own her own hair salon, own a family business and maybe even get married and settle down one day,' Castro's mother Lisa Phelps told the court. 'I know without a doubt where she is. She is in heaven in the presence of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Do you know where you are going?' 'You will have time now, to get right with the Lord. The fire you set was blazing but it's nothing compared to hell.' Castro's close friend Emelina Corona said Serriteno 'tore a hole through every single person who knew and loved her'. 'Your prison time will never equal the pain you caused. But she will live on - long after you are forgotten,' she said. Mai's neighbor Jeff Shamrock added: 'There is no place in civil society for a cold, calculated killer. And that's what he is.' Castro's body was burned beyond recognition, but her angel pendant survived and led to her body being identified and Serriteno arrested Solano County District Attorney Krishna Abrams said Serriteno 'almost got away with it' when he burned Castro's body to cover up his crime. 'This was one of the most catastrophic fires in the history of Solano County. Lives of those impacted have been changed forever,' she said. 'We cannot undo these vicious, brutal, and senseless acts by Serriteno, but the one saving grace with this plea and sentence is that it provides some sense of closure for all of the victims and their loved ones. 'This defendant will be locked up for the remainder of his life to keep him from harming anyone else.' The LNU Lightning Complex was one of the largest wildfires in the state's history, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The other fires were sparked after nearly 11,000 lightning strikes hit the northern part of the state as it endured a historic heatwave. Collectively, the fire complex scorched over 363,000 acres across California's famed wine country and burned down almost 1,500 structures after forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. The massive inferno tore through the area north of San Francisco for two months and killed six people.

Nashville cop is given slap on the wrist after filming explicit sex video while wearing his uniform

A police officer who was caught on camera groping a woman's breasts during a raunchy skit while wearing his uniform has pleaded no contest - and will walk away with just probation. Sean Herman, a former officer with the Metro Nashville Police Department in Tennessee, entered the plea to felony official misconduct this week in connection with his May 2024 arrest. As part of the deal, Herman was sentenced to a year of supervised probation. He also had his Peace Officer Standards and Training certification suspended in August 2024. Herman was originally fired and criminally charged after detectives identified him as the man in a Metro Nashville police uniform in the explicit video, which showed him taking part in a mock traffic stop with a female driver who exposed her breasts. Investigators say the clip was filmed on April 26, 2024, in a Madison-area warehouse parking lot - while Herman was on duty as a patrol officer. He had been employed by the department for three years prior to his firing and arrest. The scandal broke when police discovered the clip on OnlyFans, posted by creator Jordin and titled 'Can't believe he didn't arrest me.' Herman's cover was blown when his department patch was visible on camera, even though his face never appeared. The video begins with Jordin sitting in the driver's seat, joking with a passenger about being pulled over. 'I'm not going to get a ticket… I'm going to show him my t**s,' she said. Herman, identifying himself as 'Officer Johnson of PD,' told her she was speeding 65mph in a 45 zone. When she admitted she didn't have her license, she flashed her breasts. 'Ma'am, it's 2024. I can see t**s on the internet any time,' Herman replied. 'Well, what if you touched them?' Jordin countered - and Herman agreed, reaching in to grope her breasts before grabbing his own genitals through his pants. He said he would let her off with a warning and walks away, much to the surprise of Jordin's passenger. While Herman had his hands at the car window, there was a brief second where just enough of the MNPD patch was visible to identify it. That was all police needed to investigate and identify Herman. Police Chief John Drake ordered the investigation to continue even after Herman's firing, which led to his indictment and $3,000 bond. 'That was one of the most outrageous, disrespectful acts that a person here could do and, by disrespectful, I mean to all the MNPD employees and this agency,' the department said at the time. In an interview with OutKick published last May, Jordin explained how the controversial video came about. 'I met the officer a while back in person for a few moments and one day he saw me on my Reddit and reached out about potentially filming a full video at some point in the future. In the meantime I had an idea to do a 'fake' traffic stop where I'd flash him to get out of a ticket,' Jordin told OutKick. She said the clip wasn't originally intended for OnlyFans but as a promotional stunt. 'The video was only to be used for promo/clickbait on Twitter and other socials to bring eyes to my platform. Obviously we've all wondered if flashing cops would get us out of tickets right? Every guy/girl has joked about it, so I thought it'd be funny/playful.' Asked if there was more footage, Jordin told OutKick: 'No, the clip is all we have. We took one additional photo after at his request but it's clothed and safe for viewing eyes.' She later told OutKick that she removed the clip from public platforms and now plans to sell it on her OnlyFans, with all proceeds going to Herman to help him get back on his feet. Jordin also revealed she paid him a month's salary after his termination and hopes the proceeds from the clip will provide additional support. She said she took the video down once she realized it was being reported to police. 'Unfortunately it was too late at that point. I had metro detectives actually show up to ask questions about the incident. These were when, where, why type questions.' Jordin believes the attention it gained on Twitter put it on law enforcement's radar. 'I'm under the impression that the local media turned it in to the department. I do believe that it was from my Twitter. The video was sitting at 2 million views at that point and had been retweeted 5,500 times so it's safe to assume that was the culprit.' She also defended Herman's character. 'I do want to make it clearly known that he's a very respectful guy, very polite, and wasn't an officer that would've fit a profile that many are lumping him into.' Although she isn't sure what Herman will do next, Jordin suggested he has the looks and demeanor to thrive if he ever chose to enter the adult content world. 'I certainly think he'd do very well based on his overall physical stature/figure and demeanor. He's a very nice guy.' As for herself, Jordin told OutKick she's noticed a 'noticeable uptick' in subscribers since the scandal, with fans requesting the video.
