Malaysia to unveil new incentives to boost semiconductor growth, says Tengku Zafrul
SINGAPORE, May 21 — The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) is creating targeted incentives aimed at further boosting the growth of the local semiconductor industry, said its Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
He said the announcement would be made in July to mark the first anniversary of the launch of the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS).
'I can't reveal too much about what we will be announcing, but what I can say is that we are going to continue supporting this industry.
'We've been engaging with the industry to understand its needs and priorities. Of course, we know that what it wants is more fiscal support to strengthen the ecosystem, but also the right policy framework,' he said in his keynote address at the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) supply chain event held here.
The event took place as part of the ongoing SEMICON Southeast Asia (SEA) 2025, the region's premier platform for the global electronics and semiconductor industry.
Tengku Zafrul added that MITI would continue working closely with players in the semiconductor sector as the ministry navigates changes within the industry amid geopolitical uncertainty.
He emphasised that Malaysia would continue to advocate global collaboration and dialogue to ensure the country remains relevant in the global supply chain.
'We recognise the sovereign right of nations to develop their domestic industries, but we must also stress the importance of global collaboration,' he said.
The minister noted that Malaysia has been part of the semiconductor industry since the 1970s and has grown steadily, built strong partnerships, and attracted some of the world's most renowned companies.
He said that last year, Malaysia's semiconductor sector contributed about US$130 billion (RM575 billion) to national electronics exports and now accounts for 13 per cent of global back-end semiconductor output.
Meanwhile, at a luncheon with industry leaders, Tengku Zafrul said Malaysia is actively diversifying its markets and has ratified 17 free trade agreements (FTAs) to date.
'The Malaysia-South Korea FTA will be finalised this October. We have resumed FTA negotiations with the EU. Negotiations for FTA upgrades with China and India are also ongoing at the ASEAN level, where Malaysia is leading the agenda this year as chair," he said.
He added that Malaysia is also advancing negotiations on the Digital Economic Framework Agreement (DEFA) this year.
Earlier, Tengku Zafrul launched the Malaysia Pavilion at SEMICON SEA 2025.
The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) brought over nine Malaysian companies to participate in the event, offering a wide range of products and services tailored to the microelectronics and semiconductor value chain.
More than 90 Malaysian companies are participating in this year's SEMICON SEA. — Bernama

Klang villagers up in arms over columbarium project
Kampung Raja Uda village committee chairman Azhar Ibrahim with fellow residents at a peaceful rally today to protest against the columbarium project. (Bernama pic) KLANG : Residents of Kampung Raja Uda near here are considering submitting a protest memorandum to the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, regarding the construction of a four-storey columbarium adjacent to the mosque in their area. Village committee chairman Azhar Ibrahim said that most of the 5,000 residents in the village oppose the construction of the columbarium on a one-hectare plot of private land. He said the project had not been discussed with the residents, who only became aware of it two weeks ago. 'Many residents are worried that the village area may become polluted by ashes generated from the cremation process, particularly for homes situated less than 10 metres from the site,' he told reporters after participating in a peaceful protest on Persiaran Raja Muda Musa in Port Klang today. Dozens of village residents were at the protest, expressing their opposition to the construction of the columbarium. Azhar said that in the last two days, residents have submitted over 300 protest notices online to the Klang city council regarding the planned project. He said the villagers want the construction of the columbarium to be cancelled, to ensure the comfort of residents, especially Muslims. The imam of Kampung Raja Uda mosque, Bazaireen Baharuddin, said: 'We strongly oppose the construction of this four-storey complex' less than 50m from our place of worship. 'I am concerned that once the columbarium begins operating, it will host many religious ceremonies, making the Muslim residents here feel uncomfortable,' he said. He said the villagers hoped the MP, state assemblyman, and Klang mayor would listen to their concerns.

Cambodian PM briefs Anwar on border tensions with Thailand
Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet said in a Facebook post that he congratulated Anwar Ibrahim on the successful hosting of the Asean summit and related meetings in Kuala Lumpur late last month. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet said today that he had conveyed his country's position on the ongoing border tension with Thailand to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during a telephone conversation. Manet said Cambodia adheres to the principle of maintaining peace, friendship, and good cooperation with Thailand, Bernama reported. 'Cambodia's decision to refer Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, Ta Krabei Temple and Mom Bei areas to the International Court of Justice is to seek an early, peaceful and permanent solution to the border issue in these areas rather than to prolong the uncertainty which can lead to renewed armed conflicts,' he said. Tensions between the two neighbours escalated after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a clash with Thai troops in Preah Vihear province on May 28. Manet also said that Cambodia continues to cooperate with Thailand to expedite the demarcation and delimitation of the border, save for the four mentioned areas, through a joint border commission, which is expected to meet in Phnom Penh on June 14.
