Monsoon likely to keep date with UP
Lucknow: While heat wave conditions abated across the state on Monday, if all goes well, southwest monsoon will keep its date with UP this year. Conditions are favourable for entry of the monsoon into east UP in next 2-3 days, said Met officials on Monday.
Till 2019, normal monsoon arrival date in UP was June 15, but it was revised to June 18 in 2020 based on studies of 59 years data (1961-2019). The new normal monsoon arrival dates are: Kerala on June 1, UP on June 18 and Lucknow on June 23.
Overcast and cloudy skies with rainfall at isolated places led to a drop in maximum temperatures by 3-10 degrees Celsius across the state. Orai was the hottest with 42.8 degrees Celsius. In the rest of the state, maximum temperatures dropped below 40 degrees Celsius.
Similar conditions will prevail for the next few days.
"There is a western disturbance over Pakistan and a cyclonic circulation over Punjab. Another cyclonic circulation is hovering over Bay Bengal. Further, there has been interaction between moisture laden easterlies and dry westerlies. All these factors have caused change in the weather conditions and made conditions favourable for the advancement of monsoon," said Mohammad Danish, senior scientist at the state Met department.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon has further advanced into some parts of Gujarat; remaining parts of Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Telangana; some parts of Madhya Pradesh; some more parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The northern limit of the monsoon passes through Veraval, Bhavnagar and Vadodara in Gujarat, Khargone in Madhya Pradesh, Amravati in Maharashtra, Durg in Chhattisgarh and Bargarh and Chandbali in Odisha.
Conditions are favourable for further advance of monsoon over remaining parts of North Arabian Sea; some more parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh; remaining parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Odisha; some parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand; remaining parts of Northwest Bay of Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal; some parts of Bihar and east UP during next 2-3 days.
Meanwhile, the maximum temperature in the city dropped to 35.7 degrees Celsius, 2.3 units below normal, on Monday.
However, the night was warm with a minimum temperature of 29 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal.
On Tuesday, the sky will be partly cloudy becoming generally cloudy sky towards evening and night with possibility of light rainfall. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 35 and 27 degree Celsius, respectively.

Mercury lets up as pre-monsoon showers bring respite to UP
Even as the onset of southwest monsoon was yet to begin in the state, conditions were favourable for it to advance into parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh in the next two to three days, the weather department said on Monday. It issued a heavy rain warning for East UP. While the rain deficit for the state was pegged at negative 46%, pre-monsoon rainfall activities remained normal in the state over the last 24 hours. Light to moderate rain with scattered thunderstorms was recorded at several places in western Uttar Pradesh and some in eastern parts as well, weathermen added. Heavy to very heavy rainfall was also observed at some places. On the day, Bareilly received the highest rainfall of 149.4 mm, followed by 120 mm Kucha (Saharipur), 86 mm in Bijnor, 83 mm Mikapur (Gonda) and 66.4 mm in Sharadanagar (Lakhimpur Kheri). As a result of widespread rainfall, there has been a significant drop in temperature, and heatwave conditions have completely disappeared from the state. Only one meteorological station in UP, Orai, saw mercury spike to above 40 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the forecast for the state was very likely rain/thundershower at a few places. The met department issued a warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning/gusty winds (speed 40-50 kmph) at isolated places. Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in East UP. IMD has issued an orange alert for east UP districts for heavy rains in isolated places. Meanwhile, the day and night temperatures in the state capital on Monday were 35.7 and 29 degrees Celsius.

On Monday, the rain fury disrupted parts of the Mumbai, leaving three individuals injured in a wall collapse and tree fall incidents. As rains continued to lash the city on Monday, Colaba and Santacruz weather observatories for south Mumbai and suburbs logged 42.2 mm and 69.6 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm respectively. Meanwhile the Nariyalwadi area in the western suburbs received the highest rainfall at 93 mm in 10- hour period ending at 6 pm, followed by BKC (92 mm) and Khar East (86 mm).
