
Omani runners achieve sporting feat at the Riyadh Marathon 2025
Omani runners Saleh al Saidi, Waddah al Fulaiti, and Hanan al Jahmani have achieved a remarkable sporting feat at the Riyadh Marathon 2025, securing top positions in various races amidst fierce competition from over 40,000 participants representing 100 countries.
Saleh al Saidi clinched third place in the full marathon (42.2 km) men's category, while Waddah al Fulaiti secured third place in the half marathon (21.1 km) men's category. Meanwhile, Hanan al Jahmani also earned third place in the 10 km women's race.
Significance of Participation and Objectives
Samira al Shukaili, head of the Omani delegation, highlighted that the participation in the Riyadh International Marathon 2025 came upon an invitation from the Saudi Sports for All Federation. The selection of Omani runners was coordinated with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, ensuring that the most qualified athletes represented the Sultanate of Oman.
She explained that the selection process was based on the results of runners who excelled in Governorate Marathons and the Al Mouj Muscat Marathon, with the Oman Athletics Association conducting a technical evaluation before officially approving the selected athletes.
Al Shukaili emphasised the strategic importance of this participation, stating, 'We were keen to take part in this marathon for several reasons. Firstly, it aligns with Oman's sports strategy, which aims to promote community sports as part of the 'Sports and Society' pillar. Additionally, the event is one of the world's most prestigious international marathons, offering our runners an invaluable opportunity to compete against elite athletes, thereby enhancing their technical skills and gaining international exposure.'
A Competitive and Prestigious International Marathon
Al Shukaili underscored the highly competitive nature of the marathon, with over 40,000 runners from 100 countries participating. Despite the strong competition, the Omani runners managed to secure top positions, marking a significant achievement for Omani sports.
She concluded by stating, 'These achievements play a vital role in the overall development of Omani sports, strengthening the country's standing in marathon races while motivating athletes to participate in more international competitions in the future.'
The Riyadh International Marathon is one of the most prominent annual sporting events, attracting athletes from around the world with a primary focus on promoting health and fitness. The marathon features four main races catering to different skill levels: Full Marathon (42.2 km) — for professional runners; Half Marathon (21.1 km) — for intermediate-level athletes; 10 km Race — for running enthusiasts; and 4 km Race — designed for families and beginners.
These achievements mark a significant step forward in boosting long-distance running and marathon culture in Oman. MUSCAT: Oman is preparing to host the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy from October 24–26, marking another step that reflects the high level of trust it enjoys from continental federations. During a press conference held by the organising committee on Wednesday, the technical and organisational details of the event were revealed, along with the opportunities it brings to promote Omani sport and expand the fan base of this relatively new game in the Sultanate of Oman. Nabil al Busaidy, Chairman of the Oman Rugby Committee, confirmed that this is the first time Oman will host a sanctioned international rugby tournament. He noted that hosting the event is a major achievement that places the Sultanate of Oman on the global rugby map. He added that the main goal is to present Oman to the world through this event, while also giving local players the chance to showcase their talents against continental teams. Al Busaidy pointed out that the presence of integrated sports facilities, such as the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in the Wilayat of Bausher and the ROP Stadium, was a key factor in earning the trust of the Asian Rugby Federation. Al Busaidy also confirmed that the Oman Rugby Committee is working to spread the culture of the game within society, particularly among school students, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, which will allow students to attend matches for free. He also mentioned a long-term plan to train local coaches and referees in cooperation with the Asian Rugby Federation, in addition to exchanging expertise with continental and international federations. Farsi brothers win gold, silver at jiu-jitsu championship in Dubai
By MOHAMMED TAHA Muscat – Siblings Abdullah and Mohammed bin Khamis al Farsi made Oman proud after winning medals at the second edition of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship 'No-Gi', which concluded on Sunday at Al Nasr Club in Dubai. Mohammed claimed gold in the under-69kg professional division (purple belt), while Abdullah secured silver in the same weight category (black belt). Abdullah bin Khamis al Farsi Speaking to Muscat Daily from Dubai, Abdullah said, 'These results prove that Omani jiu-jitsu players are capable of competing in the toughest championships. Jiu-jitsu is just catching on in Oman, and the future will be even brighter with the support of the media and people of Oman.' Regarded as one of the region's most prominent jiu-jitsu events, the championship drew more than 10,000 male and female athletes of various nationalities and showcased high technical standards that reflected the remarkable growth of the sport. The prize money has also increased this year to AED3mn to further encourage competitiveness and motivate rising talent. No-Gi contests are considered among the most demanding and fastest forms of jiu-jitsu, requiring greater agility and tactical skills than traditional Gi events. These serve as key platforms for developing players and honing their skills in preparation for forthcoming international competitions.
