Simone Inzaghi has been appointed coach of Al-Hilal, the Saudi Pro League side announced on Wednesday.
The former Inter Milan coach left the Serie A club on Tuesday after a humiliating 5-0 loss in the Champions League final against Paris St Germain capped a trophyless season.
The Saudi club did not immediately disclose any details about Inzaghi's contract, but Italian media reported that it could be worth up to 30 million euros ($34.25 million) per season.
His first task will be to take charge at the Club World Cup in the U.S. where they will face Real Madrid on June 18th. REUTERS

REUTERS/Amel Emric ZENICA, Bosnia - Erna Huseinovic fell in love with rugby after coaching young children at a local club in the central town of Zenica, the home of Bosnia's first women's rugby sevens team. A speedy winger, Huseinovic is preparing with her teammates for their first international competition in Croatia in September. "I found in rugby something that I did not find in other sports," said Huseinovic, a 25-year-old student at the Zenica faculty for sports. "The goal of my team is to achieve success in regional competitions and qualify for the 2032 Olympic Games," she said. Rugby has been played for 50 years in Zenica, and Celik, regular winners of rugby championships in the former Yugoslavia, established the first women's team last year after a previous attempt had failed during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Our goal is to form women's teams in several cities across Bosnia so they can compete in domestic and international competitions," said Mirza Oruc, a vice-president of Bosnia's rugby association and coach of the national women's team. "We want to compete in rugby sevens and qualify for the Brisbane Olympic Games," Oruc told Reuters, adding that sevens was a version of rugby helping to break stereotypes about the tough sport being exclusively for men. Sara Hadzic, 25, heard about rugby at Zenica university, where she studies German language and literature. "I wanted to try something new and different, to meet new girlfriends," said Hadzic, who did karate as a child. "I am playing now recreationally but I might go professional in the future." The mothers of several children training at the Celik club decided to try out the sports themselves. "Rugby is love, friendship, socializing, family," said Brankica Sekerovic. "I have come to the club as a supporter during tournaments and met some wonderful mums ... and then came a love for rugby." Ancelotti hopes Raphinha will lift Brazil's attack against Paraguay

GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador - Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti is hopeful Raphinha will help sharpen his team's attack when they face Paraguay at home, the Italian said after blaming poor pitch conditions for Thursday's goalless draw with Ecuador. Ancelotti's much-anticipated debut as Brazil manager ended in frustration, as his side laboured to a goalless draw against Sebastian Beccacece's Ecuador in Guayaquil, where they were second best for large stretches, despite their wealth of talent. "I think the pitch conditions here made it a bit tricky to play a more intricate game from the back. It was harder to control the ball," Ancelotti told reporters after the match. "That said, we had two very good chances, with Vinicius Jr, with Casemiro in the second half. Yes, we could've done better in attack, but you've also got to take into account the strength of the opponent. "Ecuador played a very good game, just as we did... The journeys here are really long, that takes its toll a bit." The Italian manager, appointed last month, is under considerable pressure as he faces the tough task of guiding the five-times world champions Brazil back to form. The top six teams qualify directly for next year's World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Brazil remain in fourth place with 22 points in the continental standings. They face Paraguay on Tuesday in Sao Paulo, where Barcelona winger Raphinha is set to feature after missing the match in Ecuador. "There's room to improve, of course... I'm sure we'll improve in attack too, because today we were missing a very important player. That's Raphinha, who will be back, Ancelotti added. "I think the match against Paraguay will be different, because we will have more opportunity to control the game. We will need to play at a higher tempo, with more movement, more intensity. "I think the quality of the players is very high, so even if we don't have much time to work, we have still got that potential." Summer vacations must wait as 32 clubs head to US for expanded Club World Cup

[SINGAPORE] The odd-numbered years are usually when there isn't any major football tournament taking place in the summer. This year, however, marks a big shift from that tradition with the expanded Fifa Club World Cup kicking off in the United States next weekend. The sport's governing body Fifa caused a big shakeup when it announced that it changed the format from an annual seven-team tournament to a massive 32-team event to be held every four years. This latest edition – set to take place from June 14 to July 13 – is meant to be a prelude to the 2026 World Cup that will be staged across the US, Canada and Mexico. The 32 teams involved this year have been placed into eight groups of four, with each club playing their group opponents once. The top two from each section will progress to the round of 16, and from there it will be single-match knockouts all the way to the final. Inter Miami and their star player Lionel Messi will feature in the opening match, with the Major League Soccer team facing Egyptian club Al-Ahly at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on the evening of June 14 (June 15, 8 am kickoff, Singapore time). The championship match will take place on July 13 at the 82,500-seater MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey – the same venue where next year's World Cup final will be played. In the first of this two-part preview on the Club World Cup, BT Weekend looks at three teams – unsurprisingly, all of them are from Europe – that are among the hot favourites to lift the trophy. Sign Up Sign Up Paris Saint-Germain Fresh from winning the Champions League in Munich last week, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) bulldozed everything in their path to claim an impressive treble of trophies this season. After jettisoning Kylian Mbappe last summer, many did not expect PSG to make much of an impact on the continental stage. How wrong they were. The Parisians did not just defeat Inter Milan in the Champions League final – they slaughtered their opponents by a record margin, 5-0, to leave no doubt that they are the best side in club football. PSG are a joy to watch, and they have a squad blessed with the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Goncalo Ramos. Manager Luis Enrique relishes the big occasions, and he will be key to motivating his exhausted players to give it one more go in America and bring home another piece of silverware. PSG are in Group B where they will face Seattle Sounders (USA), Botafogo (Brazil) and Atletico Madrid (Spain). Manchester City The Citizens didn't have the best season, by their lofty standards. They finally relinquished their grip on the English Premier League to Liverpool, having won it for the past four seasons. In the Champions League, Pep Guardiola's men only went as far as the Round of 16 where they lost both legs to Real Madrid. City also tasted defeat in the FA Cup final last month as Crystal Palace stunned them at Wembley. The latest signing for Real Madrid is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who just joined from Liverpool. PHOTO: AFP Still, City seem to have sorted out most of their defensive frailties and they do have one of the world's best strikers in the form of Erling Haaland, who spent many weeks out through injury and is now back fully fit and raring to go. City are in Group G and they will square off against Juventus (Italy), Wydad AC (Morocco) and Al Ain (UAE). Real Madrid When Madrid signed Kylian Mbappe from PSG last summer, many thought the Frenchman would deliver the goals needed to win trophies this season. The 26-year-old did score plenty (38 in total) for Madrid, but his new team didn't have much silverware to show for it, except the Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. Given a choice, those were probably the two trophies on the bottom of the priority list for Los Blancos. They came in second to Barcelona in La Liga, and were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals. PHOTO: EPA-EFE Desperate to salvage some pride, Madrid and their new coach Xabi Alonso will descend on the US and do what they can to win the Club World Cup. They have a squad packed with winners, including the likes of Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham. The latest signing is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who just joined from Liverpool. Madrid are in Group H along with RB Salzburg (Austria), Pachuka (Mexico) and Al-Hilal (Saudi Arabia). Next weekend: We put the spotlight on four of the underdogs that could spring a surprise at the Club World Cup.
