Independent dog breeds that can be left alone and are great for busy pet owners

Daily Mirror23-07-2025
Independent dog breeds are often better at being left alone than their more needy counterparts, and are ideal for people who work long hours, but want a furry friend to welcome them home
Getting a dog is a massive commitment and many potential pet owners worry that they will be too occupied to properly care for them properly. This concern is particularly prevalent among shift and office workers who might be out of the house more often than home workers.

Individuals who spend lengthy periods away from home may decide against having a dog due to the constant anxiety that their pet might be feeling lonely, having been left alone. However, all dog breeds are unique, and actually, some dogs are independent and confident enough to spend a few hours at home by themselves.

Of course, it's crucial to provide your dog with the care and attention they require, and a dog should never be left alone for more than two to four hours without being checked on.

For those exploring different dog breeds, Purina has compiled a list of the most self-reliant pups that can comfortably handle some alone time while you're out during the day.
Here are their top five independent dog breeds that are okay to be left to their own devices, reports the Daily Record.
Top five independent dog breeds that can be left alone.

1. Chow Chow
The Chow Chow is recognised for their adorable teddy bear appearance, but not many are aware of their independent personalities.
They are not overly social and, in fact, some would argue that they enjoy their own company a bit too much. This is a dog breed that can be left alone for a few hours, making it perfect for busy individuals who are constantly on the go.

2. Greyhound
These gentle giants are renowned for their athletic abilities, but they are often just as content lounging around.
The Greyhound is a great choice for those who need a dog that can handle being alone for a bit, but remember to shower them with attention when you're home. It's also crucial to train them to behave when left alone in the house as these large dogs can easily cause chaos.

3. Lhasa Apso
These dogs may be small, but they're known for their feisty nature, so early training and socialisation are essential to ensure they can be trusted without human supervision.
However, once they're well-trained, they're unlikely to feel anxious when you're out of the house without them.

4. Shar Pei
Shar Peis are devoted to their human families and are recognised for their reserved nature. They're another breed that can cope with being left alone with the right training.
But like all dogs, they shouldn't be left for more than four hours a day, so those working long hours should arrange for someone to check on them while they're away.
5. Miniature Schnauzer
This pup can handle being left alone, but they require plenty of toys to keep their active mind occupied. They're intelligent, easy to train and eager to please, making them ideal for those seeking a laid-back pet parenting experience.
But don't forget to lavish your Schnauzer with affection whenever you're leaving or returning home so they know they're cherished.

Get shower screen sparkling in minutes with little-known product that's better than vinegar

Achieving that perfect streak-free shine on your shower glass can be difficult, but one specific product could be just the thing you need. Cleaning the shower screen in your bathroom can be a tough task. And when you finally get it sparkling, it can be just as hard to keep it stain-free. Shampoo, soap, and even water can quickly cling to the screen, making it a grubby mess all over again. ‌ Most believe that white vinegar is the ideal product to banish the stains; however, experts say there's another, lesser-known product that works quicker and even better. ‌ The hack, which was shared by consumer experts at Which?, on TikTok, shows a dirty shower screen being cleaned. Speaking over the video, the experts said: "Spraying it with vinegar will be effective, but citric acid is even better. It's stronger than vinegar, and brilliant at fighting limescale." ‌ All you need to do is mix a couple of spoonfuls of citric acid with hot water in a spray bottle, and apply it liberally all over your dirty shower screen. Then, leave it for a couple of minutes, as this will help the mixture to really seep into the limescale marks. Once you've done that, use a non-scratch sponge to scrub the glass clean, before spritzing with the mixture again and using a squeegee to wipe it off afterwards. But if you don't have a squeegee to hand, don't worry - you can use a microfibre cloth instead for the same effect. ‌ You can buy a tub of citric acid from Asda for as little as £1.75, and this is enough to do multiple cleaning jobs. In the video's comments, several people suggested their own tried-and-tested methods for keeping the shower clean. One person said: "Try using 5% of washing up liquid and 5% of cleaning white vinegar in a spray bottle, top it up with water. This helps to maintain the shower after use." Another suggested: "Just squeegee the screen every time you shower, that way there are never water droplets to dry and form [lime]scale." ‌ Mrs Hinch fans also recently shared a 'brilliant' cleaning item you can buy from Tesco that 'removes water marks' from shower screens and is 'effortless' to use. You may already have the handy tool at home, as it can be used for a number of different household cleaning tasks. But if you don't, they often cost less than £2 and can be picked up from most supermarkets. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! In the 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' Facebook group, Dawn Allison asked: "Best thing to clean shower screen, please? " In response, many people suggested the handy washing-up tool with an attached sponge. Lisa Harris shared a tip: "Mix equal parts of Fairy Liquid and white vinegar in a Dishmatic. Rinse and dry. Removes built-up water marks and soap scum from your shower screen. It makes cleaning effortless." Lynney Jack also said: "Viakal and then scrub side with Dishmatic. Leave on for 20 minutes then rinse off. Use a squeegee every time and no need to clean! ".

ScotRail train evacuated after carriages fill with smoke and ‘strange smell'

Passengers were left shaken this morning after a ScotRail train travelling from Inverness to Glasgow Queen Street filled with smoke and a "strange smell". Forty passengers had to be evacuated from a ScotRail train after carriages began filling with smoke and a "strange smell". ‌ Fire crews raced to the train, which had left Inverness at 5.36am today bound for Glasgow Queen Street, after smoke was spotted on board. ‌ The service came to a halt between Gleneagles and Dunblane with travellers taken off amid a strong, pungent odour and put on another service heading for Perth. No injuries were reported. ‌ Passengers were told their tickets would be accepted on rail replacement services. ScotRail has warned of potential delays and changes on routes between Glasgow Queen Street and Inverness/Aberdeen, as well as Edinburgh Waverley and Inverness. A passenger, Sarah MacMath, 35, told the BBC how a "person came over with a loud speaker" and told people to leave her carriage. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "We did notice there was a bit of a funny smell from Aviemore or Kingussie - just a strange smell," she said. "I dozed off and woke up when the train stopped near Gleneagles and there was quite a lot of smoke in the carriage. The person then came over the loud speaker and asked us to either move to the end carriage or the first carriage. "At that point, I stood up and there was a pretty heavy smell of smoke and there was quite a lot of it in the carriage." ‌ Mark Ilderton, ScotRail's service delivery director, said passengers were safely evacuated. He said: "The 05:36 Inverness to Glasgow Queen Street service was brought to a stop near Gleneagles this morning after reports of smoke being detected in one of the carriages. Our immediate priority is the safety and wellbeing of everyone on board, and customers have been safely assisted from the train." A message by ScotRail on X this morning read: "Due to a broken down train between Gleneagles and Dunblane all lines are blocked. Please keep an eye on our app/website for live service updates." It later said: "A rescue train has been dispatched to assist the broken-down train," and that was followed by a post, shortly before midday, saying: "The broken-down train is now on the move back to the depot and we're working to get trains and crew back into position." And on the ScotRail website it says of trouble between Gleneagles and Dunblane: "Train services running through these stations are returning to normal but some services will still be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected to last until around 13:30 today (01 August)."

Dear Coleen: My wife resents me after my affair but I can't give up my girlfriend

"Everything else comes first and now she resents me too because of the affair." Dear Coleen I'm a married man in my early 40s with two young children. About a year ago, I met another woman online and we started talking regularly. I wasn't happy in my marriage at the time and ended up starting an affair with this woman. ‌ I was a sloppy covering my tracks, so my wife found out. Since then, we've been having counselling once a week, but I'm still seeing the other woman in secret. ‌ My dilemma is, I don't want to wreck my marriage while my kids are young. I'd like them to have both of us at home. But I feel like the marriage is done in all but name. ‌ My wife and I never have sex or spend any real time together – the kids, her job and everything else comes first and now she resents me too because of the affair. I've tried to talk to her, but she gets angry and always manages to blame me. She disagrees with me on everything and it feels like we're just too different. With my girlfriend, things are easy and fun and the sex is great. We connect on so many levels it feels like we're soulmates. ‌ What do I do? I feel caught between a rock and hard place – wanting to do right by my kids, but also needing to feel happy and fulfilled. Any ideas? Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Coleen says Of course things are easy and fun with the person you're having an affair with! You don't have to parent together or talk about bills or whose turn it is to load the dishwasher. You're living a fantasy with her and it might not feel as fun if your wife finds out again (which she probably will) and you're out of the house. ‌ If you don't wish to be married any longer and believe you've done all you can to rescue the relationship, then do the right thing and be honest with your wife. You can't carry on lying to her and your therapist until your kids grow up and leave. As for your children, what's best for them is growing up in a happy home where there's honesty, love and respect between their parents. Maybe you've been able to shield them from conflict so far, but the cracks will start to show and they will be affected. You can still be a great parent if you separate from your wife – but that's up to you. From what you've said, it seems your marriage is over for you, but you can't bring yourself to push the button. If you do want to make a last-ditch go at it, then you have to end the affair and commit to therapy and to telling the truth, and hope your wife is still on board. But it should be because you want it not just to keep the family together under one roof.
