Sally Susman helped steer Pfizer through COVID-19. Her advice for leaders? Learn to write — and listen.

Pfizer' Communications and Policy Chief Sally Susman has made a name for herself doing just that, such as by helping the pharmaceutical giant launch its COVID-19 vaccine at the height of the pandemic.
Susman, who recently announced plans to leave Pfizer later this year after an 18-year-run, previously held similar roles at Estée Lauder and American Express. In an interview with Business Insider, she described her field as one in which there's never an average day and said that it can sometimes be as dramatic as a Hollywood blockbuster.
"This work of corporate affairs, communications, public affairs, government affairs is completely so exciting," she said. "I wake up and look at the news across the globe and I think, 'OK, now my agenda is set.' "
The profession is also important, as it can make a significant impact on a company's trajectory, according to Susman, who has advised nine CEOs over the course of her career. But she thinks the field sometimes gets misunderstood.
"It's a mistake to consider communications a soft skill," she said. "The leaders and people who want to make change, who I've seen embrace and prioritize their communications, and who know it to be a rock-hard competency, are the game changers."
Succeeding in the field requires being a strong writer, Susman said. Comms pros are tasked with storytelling, internal messaging, crafting statements for media outlets and more.
"There's no substitute for picking up the pen, parsing the arguments, drafting yourself," she said.
Still, that doesn't mean you should avoid using AI tools like ChatGPT, she added. In fact, Susman recommends taking advantage of the technology for conducting research and outlining ideas.
"I know many people are apprehensive about AI, but it is an important tool," she said. "Just like photography didn't decimate painting, AI is not going to ruin communications."
Talking regularly to executives, politicians, and other leaders can also help with writing by providing knowledge and context, Susman added. Conversations she's had with such individuals over the years informed her thinking, she said, which is why "relationships matter so much."
Another piece of advice from Susman for aspiring comms pros is to dive into geopolitics. Always keep up with major events happening around the world and ask yourself what these mean for companies and their employees.
"The opportunities around what I call 'global policy and diplomacy topics' are unlimited right now," she said.
Also, don't punish yourself for making mistakes. Susman said she's made countless gaffes over the course of her career and has no regrets.
"There were times when I failed to do enough due diligence, times my ego got the better of me," she said. "It's just human nature. It's humanity. It's what we do when we're out there trying to make a difference."
Having mentored interns and junior employees at Pfizer and companies where she previously worked, Susman said she's noticed that many young people seem to suffer from anxiety. She's seen them do things like rewrite their résumés over and over and stress about what they said or didn't say in meetings — none of which is healthy, she said.
"We are judged over long, vast, savannahs of time," she said. "We are not judged in a moment."

OpenAI is rolling out new features and exploring integrations with platforms like Shopify that could allow users to shop directly through ChatGPT. This means customers could search for and buy products from Shopify merchants without ever leaving a chat interface. For decades, online shopping began with a Google search. Consumers typed in keywords, skimmed links, compared reviews and then clicked "buy." That model is quickly being replaced by something faster, smarter and more personalized: AI-assisted shopping. According to Adobe Analytics, 39% of U.S. consumers say they've already used generative AI for shopping-related tasks. More than half (53%) plan to use it this year to research products, get gift ideas, compare pricing and discover unique brands. Instead of browsing dozens of web pages, AI assistants summarize product options instantly, personalize recommendations and even build shopping lists tailored to individual needs. Amazon recently launched a "Buy for Me" feature that allows AI agents to purchase products from other brand websites when they aren't available on Amazon. Perplexity introduced a Pro Shopping Assistant in 2024, designed to streamline decision-making by providing AI-curated product summaries This new generation of intelligent shopping tools is redefining what it means to be "discoverable." For e-commerce brands, that means adapting fast, or risk being left out of the conversation entirely. What does this mean for your business? To stay competitive in an AI-driven marketplace, brands must rethink how they present their products online. Here are five practical steps you can take today: Step 1: Shift from SEO to AEO Search engine optimization (SEO) dominated digital marketing for decades. Brands invested heavily to optimize their websites and content with keywords for search engines – a race to be listed at the top of Google's search results. That's how companies stood out among competitors, driving traffic and boosting sales. But searching for products on Google forces consumers to scroll through various websites and click a lot of links to read reviews, compare product features and evaluate pricing and shipping times. While convenient and fast compared to traditional, in-person shopping, AI now offers an even more efficient shortcut. AI chatbots can instantly search everywhere, scouring the Internet for websites and feedback, and then provide an easy-to-follow summary of findings. With customers increasingly using AI instead of Google to shop, SEO is becoming less relevant. In addition to SEO, what you now need is a way to make sure your products are included in ChatGPT's recommendations and responses. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the new SEO. While this shift is just getting underway, tech and consumer behavior are moving fast. If you want to stay ahead of the competition, you need to start adapting your strategies now to optimize for AI. Step 2: Make sure AI can understand and recommend your products As platforms like Shopify become more integrated with AI systems, you want to make sure the AI chatbot suggests your products, not your competitor's. To be recommended, brands need to organize and present their data in a way that's accessible and readable by ChatGPT. And, as consumers engage in conversation with chatbots – by adding or taking away criteria, for example – updated responses will surface in real-time. Brands will need support designing their Shopify storefronts and listings in order to stay ahead of ChatGPT's nuanced recommendation engine. That means: Optimizing your Shopify product listings with clear, conversational copy Using standardized formats for pricing, availability and shipping Highlighting your most competitive features in plain language When consumers interact with AI assistants — adding preferences or asking follow-up questions — the AI dynamically updates recommendations. Step 4: Write like a human, not a spec sheet AI tools like ChatGPT rely on natural language understanding, so your product pages need to speak the way humans do. Instead of jargon-heavy descriptions or overly technical language, focus on conversational, customer-focused storytelling: Answer common questions customers might ask Highlight use cases and real-life benefits Use bullet points, bold text and digestible formatting The more your content resembles how people actually talk and shop, the easier it is for AI to understand — and recommend — your products. Step 5: Start now — not later The AI shopping revolution is happening quickly. While the concept of AEO is still evolving, the companies that move first will have the biggest advantage. Right now, there's a narrow window to position your brand at the forefront of AI-driven discovery. This means: Auditing your product content and structure Rewriting listings for clarity and AI-readability Partnering with experts to connect your data to AI platforms Final thought: adapt early, win big This isn't just a new tech trend. Fried chicken chains outperformed the rest of the dining sector in 2024, as restaurant visits increased 4.3%, while other types of quick-service and fast-casual restaurant chains saw 1.3% and 2.4% growth, respectively, according to The Food Institute. The largest fried chicken chains for sales in 2024 were Chick-fil-A, Popeyes, and Raising Cane's, according to Technomic. No. 1, 2, 3, Raising Cane's. Growth in chicken restaurant visits may have helped the leading dining chains for overall visits, but some franchisees and smaller chains still faced financial distress and had to file for bankruptcy in 2024. RRG Inc., a Popeyes franchise operator of 17 Georgia locations, in February 2024 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as three failing locations drove down all of the operator's other restaurants. Sticky's operated 12 locations when it filed its petition, with nine in New York and three in New Jersey. It had closed two locations in New York and one each in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. De'nsite Inc., the Homewood, Ill.-based operator of the Harold's Chicken locations in Homewood, South Holland, and Olympia Fields, Ill., filed its Subchapter V petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois on July 27, listing up to $50,000 in assets and $500,000 to $1 million in liabilities. The three De'nsite Harold's Chicken locations are not affiliated with Harold's Chicken Corp., whose website lists 47 Harold's Chicken locations in 10 states nationwide. The De'nsite locations are not listed on the Harold's Chicken Corp. website. De'nsite is co-owned by Brandon Leak and Valarie Leak, RL Consultants reported. Harold's Chicken Corp. did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A worker at the Homewood location confirmed that the three De'nsite locations are a part of a separate entity. Not willing to be caught idling while Chase and American Express release new premium credit cards, Citi is launching one of its own: the Citi Strata Elite Card. Specifically, the new card is designed to directly compete with Chase's Sapphire Reserve card and the Platinum Card from American Express—both of which have recently announced new features, fees, and revamps. As for what makes Citi Strata Elite superior to its competitors' offerings? Pam Habner, Citi's head of U.S. branded cards and lending, says that in the simplest terms, 'it's the best card for premium customers who have a passion for travel and dining.' The card itself boasts an overall value of $1,500 annually, against an annual fee of $595. That includes an annual $300 hotel benefit, a $200 'splurge' credit (for use with certain brands, such as Best Buy or American Airlines), a $200 Blacklane chauffeur credit, and a fee credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. There are numerous perks associated with American Airlines, too, which has had a long relationship with Citi, including four Admirals Club lounge passes. Card members also multiply their points earnings by 12 when booking hotels, car rentals, or attractions through the card's travel portal, along with a six-times multiplier when booking air travel or ordering from certain restaurants at certain times. In all, it packs a powerful punch for people who like to travel and eat out. Habner says that compared with competing cards, it 'is the card with the highest reward potential on the market—it offers travelers more benefits than any other card.' And she notes that the top reason premium cardholders opt for high-level or premium cards is for the travel benefits, according to her team's research. There was a good amount of research, too, that went into the development of the card. While Citi's previous premium card was 'designed for its time,' the new card 'meets the needs of the modern premium customer,' Habner says, and it took a good amount of time, data, and research to figure out exactly what those were. The Strata Elite Card's slate of benefits and perks, she says, reflects Citi's findings.
