Roy Thomas Baker Dies: Producer On ‘Bohemian Rhapsody' & Other Classics Was 78
Roy Thomas Baker, the prolific producer who worked with the likes of Queen, The Cars, David Bowie, Devo, Journey and The Smashing Pumpkins, has died according to The New York Times. He was 78.
Baker is best known for his work on one of rock's greatest and most enduring anthems: Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody.' The sprawling operatic song proved a challenge to record, especially given the technology of the time. Baker and the band had to transfer the tune's many overlapping tracks across eight generations of 24-track tape, which required close to 200 tracks for overdubs.

'We had to record it in three separate units,' Baker later recalled. 'We did the whole beginning bit, then the whole middle bit and then the whole end. It was complete madness. The middle part started off being just a couple of seconds, but Freddie kept coming in with more 'Galileos' and we kept on adding to the opera section, and it just got bigger and bigger.'
The song, released in 1978, originally reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200. It found a whole new life when it became part of the soundtrack for Wayne's World in 1992.
'When the song was released, I thought it was going to be a hit,' Baker told The New York Times in 2005. 'We didn't know it was going to be quite that big. I didn't realize it was still going to be talked about 30 years later.'
He also worked with The Rolling Stones, The Who, Nazareth, Santana, T. Rex, Yes, Guns N' Roses, Alice Cooper, Foreigner, Pilot, Ozzy Osbourne, The Stranglers, Dusty Springfield, T'Pau, Mötley Crüe and Cheap Trick, among many others.
On hearing the news of Baker's passing, Queen guitarist Brian May wrote, 'Very sad to hear of the passing of Roy Thomas Baker. Roy played a huge part in the production of so much Queen music in the early days…Roy's production contribution along with Mike Stone's engineering for 'Bohemian Rhapsody' will never be forgotten. I regret slipping out of touch lately with Roy. I suppose life moves at such a pace these days that we imagine there will be plenty of time to rekindle a friendship, and then suddenly, one day, it's too late. Thank you, Roy for all the great work you did for us, and all the fun we had. Rest in Peace.'

The cast also includes Luke Grimes, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr. The contemporary Western had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme D'or and was apparently met with a mixed reaction from viewers and critics alike. "Covid felt like an inflection point, where the link to the old society we lived in was finally cut," Aster told The New York Times, explaining his vision for the film. "That old idea of democracy being something that could be any sort of countervailing force to power and tech and finance, it went away completely at that moment, and it's where I think we became fully isolated. Hey, there! Today is the only Friday the 13th we'll have in 2025, so it's a good enough reason to watch a horror movie if you enjoy that sort of thing. We definitely don't want you to be scared of losing your Wordle streak, though. To help keep it intact, here's our daily Wordle guide with some hints and the answer for Friday's puzzle (#1,455). It may be that you're a Wordle newcomer and you're not completely sure how to play the game. We're here to help with that too. Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. The gist is that there is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone. Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game's success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats. The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 5.3 billion times in 2024. So, it's little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily. To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day's secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren't in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard. However, you can still use those letters in subsequent guesses. You'll only have six guesses to find each day's word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It's also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once. Wordle is free to play on the NYT's website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets and Discord. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak. If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication's games, you don't have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You'll have access to an archive of more than 1,400 previous Wordle games. So if you're a relative newcomer, you'll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions. In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordle Bot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day's game. James Gunn's Next DCU Movie Won't Be a ‘Straight-Up Superman Sequel'
Even though Superman isn't out in theaters yet, James Gunn might already have plans for a Superman 2 brewing. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview, Gunn opened up about a potential Superman 2, and said that he wouldn't classify what he's working on next as a definitive Superman sequel, but does have something he's thinking of. 'What I'm working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes,' said Gunn. 'But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.' Gunn also responded to quotes from WB's David Zaslav, who recently said at an investor's meeting that characters like Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are crucial to the longevity of DC. Gunn said he agrees, but wouldn't limit it to just those four. 'I wouldn't say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us,' Gunn said. 'Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we're dealing with the other two.' 'Superman, DC Studios' first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures,' the official synopsis reads.
