THEY were the lions of the jungle – 10,000 British troops led by an eccentric genius.
With their distinctive slouch hats, the Chindits were the highly trained special forces who fought the Japanese, often ­hundreds of miles behind enemy lines, deep in the steaming, fetid jungles of the Far East.

Next Friday marks the anniversary of VJ Day, when, after six years, World War Two finally ended with the Allied victory over Japan.
By the time Japanese Emperor Hirohito officially surrendered on August 15, 1945, the war in Europe had been over for more than three months and the 365,000 British troops fighting in the Far East became known as the 'Forgotten Army', after its operations in the Allies' Burma campaign were largely overlooked by the Press at the time.
Today, 80 years after that victory, only two British Chindits are left alive — 104-year-old Charlie Richards and Sid Machin, 101.
Sid, of Christchurch, Dorset, will be among nearly three dozen VJ ­veterans, aged 98 to 105, who will attend a national service of commemoration hosted by the Royal British Legion on August 15.

Against the odds
The veterans will certainly not be forgotten when they join the King and Queen at the moving ceremony at Staffordshire's National Memorial Arboretum.
The royal couple will pay their respects in the Arboretum's Far East corner, which includes a ­monument to the Chindits.
In early 1942 Burma's then capital, Rangoon — now called Yangon — was overrun by Japanese forces intent on pushing north to invade India.
A maverick British military leader, Brigadier Orde Wingate, came up with a daring plan to create a multi-national force of lightly equipped men, who would work in small teams hundreds of miles inside enemy territory.

Oddball Wingate often gave orders in the nude and sported a straggly beard, supposedly to keep mosquitoes away.
When dressed, he ate raw onions which he often kept in the pocket of his filthy uniform, and he would dangle a large alarm clock from his belt to remind his men that time was against them.

Wingate named his highly trained troops after the only creature in Buddhism that is permitted to use force — Chinthe, the lion-headed dragon that sits outside every sacred pagoda in Burma, now known as Myanmar.
His men, including Major James Lumley, father of actress Joanna, called themselves the ­Chindits.

Flying in by glider, they set up strongholds behind enemy lines from where groups of men would attack the ­Japanese, often with bayonets drawn, in hand-to-hand combat.
A constant stream of transport aircraft brought in supplies that included not just ammo and food but also mules to carry equipment.

Light ambulance planes would land on remote airstrips hacked out of the jungle to evacuate the wounded, three at a time.
Despite early setbacks, the Chindits' bravery and tenacity against the odds raised morale and showed how British soldiers could live and fight in the jungle.

They also attracted the attention of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who called Wingate 'a man of genius'.
Col Charles Mercer, who died recently aged 105, recalled: 'He was quite a small man, not very military in bearing.
"I have never before listened to anybody who so compelled my attention, who dominated his audience.
"He was a fearless, inspiring leader.'

Veteran Chindit Charlie, who was 22 when he joined the unit, recalled how, after six months of hard training, Wingate told the men they were 'on the adventure of a lifetime'.

But he also warned them: 'Many of you are going to die, or suffer wounds, or near starvation. All of you will meet hardship worse than anything you have imagined.'
Charlie and Sid took part in Operation Thursday, when 85 ­gliders towed by US aircraft took off on a moonlit night in March 1944 to pass over 7,000ft peaks to land 150 miles behind the front line.
The Chindits had been ordered to relieve comrades who were holed up in a jungle base codenamed White City, but they came under attack almost every night.

So many soldiers on both sides died that the stench of death was overwhelming.

Charlie, from Kettering, Northants, recalled: 'The whole place was getting so putrid because of the number of Japanese bodies outside the perimeter that the pilots of incoming planes said they had no need of maps for the last few miles — they could smell their way in.'
Wingate's unit adopted a strategy of near silence to avoid alerting the enemy, and Charlie said: 'The rule was, everyone spoke softly, even sergeants.
"Whispers were the order of the day and even this made us a bit nervous and alert to every sound.'
In our main picture, taken by a wartime photographer from Life magazine, a group of Chindits wave joyfully at their RAF rescue plane but they had been told: 'Cheer, but don't make a sound.'

The casualty rate was still brutal. Of the 400 men in Charlie's column, just 140 were unscathed. The rest were either dead, wounded or struck down by disease.
Wingate, who by then was an acting Major General, died in 1944 in a plane crash aged 41.

At the time he was carrying a nomination for a Victoria Cross for Chindit Lt George Cairns, who had had his arm hacked off with a sword by a Japanese soldier.
Cairns, 30, killed the soldier, picked up the sword and carried on fighting. Just before he died from his wounds he said: 'Have we won?
'Did we do our stuff? Don't worry about me.'
Because the nomination was lost in Wingate's plane wreckage it was five years before Cairns was awarded his medal posthumously — the fourth VC given to a Chindit.

THE BHOYS IN their green and white hoops are on a season-long commemoration of their Irish roots, having been founded by a cleric with the intention of helping the destitute Irish in their Scottish city. We are talking, of course, not of Glasgow Celtic, but of Hibernian FC. On 6 August, the Edinburgh club hosted a free exhibition at the St Mary's Street Hall that documented their formation exactly 150 years to the day. It was one of a series of events to recognise the landmark. A few weeks before, they staged a friendly with Rot-Weiss Essen of the German third tier; the opposition they met back in 1955 when they became the first British club to play in the inaugural European Cup. A casual look at what was on display in the historical display, however, shows how at one point Hibernian FC were the greatest charitable experiment for the Irish diaspora in the world; one that Celtic would faithfully imitate right down to the small details. **** Take it right back to the start and at the time of their formation, Edinburgh had an Irish problem. Over 100,000 had left Ireland in the years during and immediately after the Great Famine to go to Scotland. While the majority settled in Glasgow, like many other cities, Edinburgh struggled to accommodate the refugees. Two of whom were John Connolly, a labourer originally from Monaghan, and his wife Mary McGinn of Ballymena, Co Antrim. They lived in Cowgate, nowadays a thriving area of modern city life, but back then a slum known as the unflattering 'Little Ireland.' Their third born son, James Connolly, would later become an enormous figure in Ireland's political history, but it was with the then seven-year-old James Connolly in mind that Limerick-born Canon Edward Hannan of St Patrick's Church and Michael Whelahan of Kilglass, Co Roscommon, who had just turned 21 and would become the club's first captain, were thinking of. James Connolly. Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo Together, they imagined a football club that would raise money for the starving Irish and help them integrate successfully into Scottish society. At this early stage, the Irish influence was absolute, starting with the name itself: Hibernia being the Roman name for Ireland. The Catholic Young Men's Society was embedded from the outset and it was insisted upon that playing members were teetotallers and practising Catholics. The club motto adopted was 'Erin Go Bragh.' Naturally, there was opposition from certain elements of the establishment and Hibernian struggled to get opposition for games. Not only was there an anti-Irish feeling, but a class issue also as football was not yet a mass, working-class pursuit. It was Heart of Midlothian of all teams that helped them out and played a series of games until the stand-off melted away and they were accepted by those that ran Scottish soccer, the Edinburgh and Scottish Football Associations. A year into their existence, they began wearing green and white hoops, something they did for a decade. They called themselves the 'Bhoys.' In 1902 when they won the Scottish Cup, they did so with Dubliner Dan McMichael as the club secretary. While teams were effectively run by committee in those days, McMichael was the de facto manager. The Irish connection has not always been particularly strong, but some notable recent players include Nick Colgan, Daryl Horgan, Anthony Stokes and the late Liam Miller. Anthony Stokes. Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill had three seasons there in the '90s under Alex Miller, while Ivan Sproule of Tyrone had two spells at Easter Road and hit a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over then champions Rangers. Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo One quirky connection was that of Pat Stanton who was acknowledged as one of Hibernian's greatest servants, a winner of the Scottish Football Writer's player of the year in 1970 and one who fended off interest from Celtic until the very final years of his career because of his connection to Hibs. He was the great-great nephew of founding member Michael Whelehan. In July of this summer, the club named one of the Easter Road stands, 'The Pat Stanton Stand.' For Hibs, it centred around a Scottish Cup drought that lasted from the Edwardian era and the refurbishment of the south stand in the 1950s, that did not reinstall the Hibs' harp emblem. The finger of suspicion for such a decision landed on chairman Harry Swan. He was selected by the board as the first non-Irish Catholic to take the role. Any quick check though would debunk that theory. Swan had presided over a post-war period that had one of Hibs' most successful periods, including three league titles in five years. He himself ordered a hand-crafted mosaic harp for the club's boardroom. Still, there are grudges that never wither. The New Year's Day match between Celtic and Rangers in 1952 provoked serious violence on the pitch. The Scottish FA considered a request for the Irish tricolour to be removed from Celtic Park. Celtic refused. Sanctions were threatened. Other clubs had their say with a vote and Hibs – represented by Swan – voted against Celtic. **** Everything changes, everything evolves. Hibernian is like any other club; home to thousands of different philosophies. For a great deal of Hibs fans, the club was about the old dock town of Leith and the local culture. For some it was a badge of anti-establishment. Others felt they were just as Irish and indeed Republican as Celtic. It's a theory that has some references in popular culture outside of the terraces. For example, in Irvine Welsh's novel Trainspotting, following the misadventures of a group of heroin addicts and Hibernian fans in Edinburgh, there is a chapter detailing Francis Begbie's New Year's Eve party where the assembled are belting out a selection of Irish Rebel songs, including 'Off to Dublin in the Green.' Alamy Stock Photo Alamy Stock Photo And yet, one of the central characters in Mark Renton comes from a family of Hearts supporters with a brother in the British Army serving in Belfast. The passage of time brings a new generation. When Hibs reached the Scottish Cup final of 2016 and beat Rangers 3-2, their first Cup since 1902, it included a few elements. The contribution of Anthony Stokes was immense. He scored the first goal, a neat stab to the far post after finding himself in space down the left wing. Rangers then grabbed two goals before Stokes' equalising header in the 80th minute. But he was a complete menace throughout, hitting the woodwork and having another shot parried, before David Grey's header in added time sealed the 3-2 win. The big Hollywood moment came as the Cup was presented to Hibs for the first time in 114 years and Hampden Park swayed to the crowd belting out that most gorgeous Hibs anthem, 'Sunshine on Leith' by The Proclaimers. There were some Irish tricolours among the Hibs end. This was a century on from the Easter Rising and James Connolly's execution. Just on Connolly; as a child, he acted as a ball-boy on match days for Hibernian. He had a love-hate relationship with his home town. The love centred mainly around Hibernian but it is striking how monuments and statues commemorating Connolly have been erected in Belfast, Dublin, Chicago and Troy, but not in Edinburgh. There is a small plaque near his birthplace. Nonetheless, there is a Hibs supporter's club named after him. It is difficult to think of another example of just how Irish emigration succeeded than Glasgow Celtic. But it's debateable if it all would have happened without the example of Hibernian FC. Four years after their establishment, Dundee was a city with a strong Irish identity, a census conducted in 1851 revealing that 19% of the city was Irish. They found their voice with the formation of Dundee Harp in 1879. Following a suspension by the Scottish Football Association in 1894, Dundee Harp stopped playing, were replaced by Dundee Hibernian, before reverting back to the Harp name prior to going defunct. It lives on in one way. The area around Lochee was known as 'Little Tipperary.' Having been formed in 1904, Lochee Harp are still on the go at junior level. Then, there was Dundee Hibernian who formed in 1909. Their first game was in August of that year against Hibernian of Edinburgh and they joined the league the following year. In 1923, they almost went bust and it was decided to change the name of the club to Dundee United, and the colours from green and white, to white and black. They would later change to orange and black in 1969. In 1887, Brother Walfrid of Sligo was inspired by the success of Hibernian and wished to achieve the same for the Irish poor in Glasgow. At the time, Hibernian made donations to the fledging enterprise. Unbeknownst to the other Celtic board members as football was evolving from amateur to professional, two Celtic board members, Glasgow businessmen John Glass and Pat Welsh, were thinking in terms of running Celtic as a profitable venture. In time, the best players of Hibernian were tempted west by the Celtic largesse. Under the management of Willie Maley, born and bred in Newry, Co Down, Celtic developed ideas of producing players from the wider east end of Glasgow and surrounding regions that gave them a strong identity. Eventually, with the help of Jock Stein, Celtic would capture the European Cup in 1967 with a team of players all from within 30 miles of Celtic Park; a feat never done before, since, or ever with the remotest chance of happening again. The affections of the Irish were with Celtic and that's how it largely remains. But it may never have happened without the vision of Hibernian FC.

Serves : 2 Course : Dinner Cooking Time : 20 mins Prep Time : 15 mins Ingredients 250g naturally smoked haddock, skinless, diced into chunks 2 rooster potatoes 500ml milk ½ chicken stock cube 1 small onion, finely diced 1 clove garlic, sliced 35g butter 100ml white wine 35g flour Sea salt Zest and juice of half a lemon 2tbs clear malt vinegar 2 eggs 2tsp wholegrain mustard Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish Begin by poaching the fish and potatoes. Place a saucepan on a low heat and add the milk and stock cube. Peel and chop the potatoes into small chunks. Place the potato and haddock into the milk and gently simmer for 15 minutes until the potato is just soft and cooked through. Carefully remove the potato and haddock from the liquid and reserve for later. Keep the liquid warm while making the soup base. Place a saucepan on a medium heat and add the butter. Add the onions and garlic and sweat for two minutes until softened, then add the white wine. Allow to simmer until the liquid has reduced by half. Now add the flour and cook for a further minute before increasing the heat and adding the warm poaching milk. Bring this to the boil, whisking all the time, until it forms a soup consistency. Return the haddock and potatoes to the soup before seasoning with salt, lemon juice and lemon zest, then remove from the heat. To poach the eggs, pour freshly boiled water from the kettle into a medium-sized to large pot, place on the heat, and bring to the boil. Add the clear malt vinegar and reduce the heat sightly to keep the water simmering. Carefully crack the eggs into the water and cook for two minutes for soft poached eggs. Remove the eggs from the water with a slotted spoon and place on some kitchen paper to strain off excess water. To serve, ladle into soup bowls, and drizzle on some wholegrain mustard. Garnish with chopped parsley and finish with a poached egg on top.

Serves : 2 Course : Brunch, Lunch, Dinner Cooking Time : 20 mins Prep Time : 30 mins Ingredients For the fish cakes: 220g naturally smoked haddock, skinless 220g leftover cold mash Handful fresh parsley, chopped Zest of 1 lemon Sea salt and black pepper 100g plain flour 2 eggs mixed with 50ml of milk, for egg wash 100g panko breadcrumbs 3tbs vegetable oil For the salsa roja: 4 tomatoes ½ red onion, diced 1 garlic clove, grated Handful fresh coriander, chopped Juice of half a lime 1tbs olive oil ½ red chilli, diced Sea salt and black pepper 2tbs clear malt vinegar 4 eggs Cut the smoked haddock into small chunks and place in a bowl. Add the leftover mash, chopped parsley, lemon zest and season with salt and pepper. Mix together gently with your hands to evenly combine, then shape the mix into four even-sized fish cakes (you can use a small round pastry cutter to help mould the shape). Preheat the oven to 190 degrees. Set up three bowls: one with flour, one with egg wash, and one with breadcrumbs. Dip the fishcakes in the flour, followed by the egg wash, followed by the breadcrumbs and coat all over. Repeat the process a second time to make sure they are fully coated, then set aside. Place a nonstick frying pan on a medium heat and add the oil. Add the fish cakes and fry for two to three minutes until golden brown on the base, then turn and fry for two to three minutes on the other side until golden brown. Remove and place them on an oven tray and place in the oven. Cook for 12 minutes at 190 degrees. While the fish cakes are in the oven, make the salsa roja and poached eggs. Remove the seeds from the tomatoes and discard, then dice the tomatoes into small cubes and place in a bowl. Add the diced onion, grated garlic, chilli, coriander, lime juice, olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine then set aside. To poach the eggs, pour freshly boiled water from the kettle into a medium-sized to large pot, place on the heat, and bring to the boil. Add the clear malt vinegar and reduce the heat sightly to keep the water simmering. Carefully crack the eggs into the water, cook for two minutes for soft poached eggs, then remove the eggs from the water with a slotted spoon and place on some kitchen paper to remove excess water To serve, place the fish cakes on serving plates and spoon on some salsa roja. Finish with the poached eggs on top.
