FIFA Club World Cup final match: US President Donald Trump to attend with First Lady Melania
Trump and first lady Melania Trump will travel from their golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, to East Rutherford 40 miles (64 kilometers) away to watch the final match of the US-hosted tournament between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea at MetLife Stadium.
Trump's trip Sunday falls on the first anniversary of the assassination attempt he survived in Butler, Pennsylvania, while campaigning for president.
The president did not have any public plans to mark the date beyond participating in a taped Fox News Channel interview with his daughter-in-law Lara Trump that aired Saturday night.
His appearance at the MetLife stadium in New Jersey, where Paris Saint-Germain face Chelsea, is very much a trial run for the World Cup final, which will take place in the same stadium next year.
Trump has made it clear he sees both tournaments, as well as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as showpieces for what he calls the "Golden Age of America" during his second term.
The billionaire Republican's close friendship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, a frequent visitor to the White House, is also a factor in his appearance, an AFP report said.
Trump has kept the Club World Cup trophy next to his desk in the Oval Office since Infantino dropped by in March. But Trump's embrace of football, or soccer as he would say, is also personal.
Sporting events have made up the bulk of Trump's trips in the US since taking office this year. In addition to his visit this weekend to the soccer tournament, he's attended the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500 in Florida, UFC fights in Miami and Newark, New Jersey, and the NCAA wrestling championships in Philadelphia.
The president has said he plans to attend multiple matches of the World Cup tournament next year.
The president's 19-year-old son Barron is a fan, as Infantino pointed out in a press conference at FIFA's new office in Trump Tower in New York on Saturday.
Asked if Trump liked the game, Infantino replied: "Well I think he does. In his first term as president of the United States there was a soccer goal in the garden of the White House.

The Netflix crew that has followed Yip to the Georgian city of Batumi were getting some decent drama on camera. Then, out of nowhere, Vaishali sent Yip home with two wins in two games. 'In both the games with 15+10 time controls, I was completely lost. Especially in the first one where I was two or three pawns down. But I just kept playing,' Vaishali told FIDE's YouTube channel in an interview after that heady victory over Yip. The ongoing FIDE Women's World Cup in Batumi has seen an incredible show of strength from the Indian contingent, four of whom are currently still contending in the pre-quarterfinals. The only other country that has as many competitors as India in the last-16 is China, which has been a bonafide powerhouse when it comes to women's chess, with six women from the country ascending to the women's world champion's throne in the past. Joining Vaishali in the last-16 are the veterans Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli while IM Divya Deshmukh is a flagbearer of the young brigade. Another young IM, Vantika Agrawal, ran into the formidable Kateryna Lagno and held the Russian star to a tied score after five games, before her resistance finally crumbled in the sixth battle. Lagno, a former World Rapid and Blitz champion, was not the only top star made to huff and puff by the 23-year-old Indian, who is ranked no 63 in the world. In the previous round, Vantika sent home a former women's world champion, Anna Ushenina, after eight battles across varied time controls. For Vantika, the current FIDE World Cup could help in the same way the last World Cup experience helped Divya. The Nagpur girl admitted that playing at the previous World Cup was very important for her as it had given her a glimpse of what top-level chess looks like. 'It's very stressful, but I wouldn't be anywhere else,' said Divya with a grin. Divya will be one half of an exciting India vs China battle at Batumi when she takes on world no 6 Zhu Jiner. For the 19-year-old — who had to negotiate hard with her mind to play for a draw and not go on the offensive to chase a win in a previous game — this will be a mettle detector. It'll also be a battle of the sport's next gen. For the last few years, the world has experienced tremors of an Indian earthquake in the sport of chess with the golden generation of Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi shaking up the world order. This ongoing World Cup at Batumi could just be a showcase for the Indian women to demonstrate their heft on the board as well. They did give a glimpse of it at last year's Chess Olympiad in Budapest where not only did the Indian women's team won a gold but there were two individual gold medals as well for Divya and Vantika. But in the aftermath of that heady Budapest night, the men started to grab headlines, with Gukesh becoming world champion, Arjun crossing 2800 rating threshold and then Pragg turning into a serial winner this year. Women's chess is currently dominated by China. Since 2017, the world has had a Chinese woman being the women's world champion. The FIDE rankings too reflect this with Hou Yifan, world champion Ju Wenjun and Lei Tingjie sitting in the top 3 rankings spots. With Zhu Jiner at No 6 and Tan Zhongyi the world no 8, five of the top 8 women in the world are currently Chinese. In contrast, there's just one Indian — Humpy — in the top 10. But just outside the top 10, are three Indians — Harika, Vaishali and Divya — readying for an assault on the top 10 club. The World Cup offers the top three finishers a spot at next year's Women's Candidates tournament, which is the final step towards challenging the reigning women's world champion. Last year's Candidates had two women from India — Humpy and Vaishali — making the cut. With 16 players left standing at Batumi, there is another race afoot. Trump asks Zelenskyy if Ukraine can strike Moscow with US weapons
By Natalia Drozdiak and Josh Wingrove Donald Trump asked Volodymyr Zelenskiy whether Ukraine could strike Moscow, an inquiry that the White House says was merely a question but one that came hours after he voiced frustration at Russian President Vladimir Putin's refusal to accept a ceasefire in the war. During a July 4 phone call with the Ukrainian president, Trump quizzed Zelenskiy about whether Ukraine could hit the Russian capital and St. Petersburg if given US long-range weapons, according to a person briefed about the conversation. Zelenskiy replied that it could if the US provided the weapons, the person said. Asked about the details of the call, which were first reported by The Financial Times, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said: 'President Trump was merely asking a question, not encouraging further killing. He's working tirelessly to stop the killing and end this war.' The conversation took place a day after Trump said he was 'very disappointed' by a phone call with Putin, in which the Russian leader insisted he wouldn't back down on his war aims. Ukraine has successfully targeted Moscow with drones in the past, but the long-range missiles provided by its western allies so far have lacked the capabilities to reach the city. Details of the discussion emerged a day after Trump pledged fresh weapons supplies to Kyiv that would be paid for by NATO allies, mainly from Europe, and threatened harsh financial penalties targeting Russian oil sales if Putin doesn't end the war on Ukraine within 50 days. Oil declined for a second day as traders doubted Trump's plan would pose a meaningful obstacle to Moscow's energy exports. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed Trump's announcement, adding that he 'assured him: Germany will decisively contribute.' Merz's government has suspended debt restrictions on defense spending both for the German army and military aid for Ukraine. Berlin is looking to finance the purchase of two Patriot batteries for Kyiv. Trump hailed Monday's announcement as a major shift in course, but the details of the decision also reflect Trump's priorities: It won't cost the US anything and Trump is not dedicating any new US funding to Ukraine, at least for now. The NATO chief said the bloc would coordinate among allies to fulfill Ukraine's military needs including air defense equipment, missiles and ammunition. Germany will play a major part, alongside Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands and Canada, according to Rutte. 'This is again Europeans stepping up,' Rutte said, adding that Putin should 'take negotiations about Ukraine more seriously.'
