Mutant species linked to $170 million damage bill in Australia
The university's Professor Scott Cummins told Yahoo News it was unclear whether the Theba pisana snails, commonly known as the white garden snail, developed resistance to pesticides in Australia, or their native Mediterranean homeland. 'It's only been the last few hundred years that we've used pesticides with these chemicals, so the mutation has likely occurred during that period,' he said.
Snails are a major problem for Australia's grain industry, because not only do they eat the leaves of plants, they also get caught up in processing equipment, contaminating it, and leading to its sale price being downgraded.
Organophosphates, a class of chemical compounds, were first synthesised in the 1800s, and resistance had already been documented in insects, but finding the enzyme in molluscs was 'unexpected'. The snails were found to be producing this protein only during their reproductive season, which is up to four months of the year, a time when they're most active and therefore more exposed to pesticides.

How do we fight invasive snails without synthetic chemicals?
Professor Cummins said controlling pest species is a constant 'war' because they continue to adapt to chemicals used to kill them. 'Then we develop something else and it goes back and forth,' he said.
To combat the problem, the team are examining whether the venom of spiders, which are a natural predator of snails, could be used as a control. They are testing hundreds of different venoms, with some found to paralyse snails.
Similar investigations are already underway at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology at Macquarie University, which is investigating using toxins from banana spiders and sea anemones to control mosquitoes.
Other alternatives include genetically engineering mosquitoes so only non-biting males survive, or changing the DNA of species preyed upon by pests so they aren't harmed. Australia's national science agency CSIRO has also explored using colour to manage snails, which are surprisingly attracted to the colour red.
Is this poison problem similar to antibiotic resistance?
Professor Cummins said a key to combatting pest species is understanding their biology.
'We've been relatively quick just to throw on a lot of chemicals and the snail dies, and that's a good thing. But if we can understand how they perceive their environment… then we can have more targeted approaches,' he said.
He compares the situation to antibiotics and their overuse, which results in resistant bacteria.
'There's a lot of research going into alternative antibiotics, but also when you use them as well, and not blanketing them all throughout the year, but using them at targeted times instead,' he added.
What is the impact of widespread chemical use?
The need to explore natural alternatives to chemical and biological controls highlights problems with widespread chemical use on crops. Not only do target species eventually evolve resistance, but they can also kill off other animals that live in the same environment.
The world is currently experiencing a rapid decline in insect populations, roughly 45 per cent in just the last 40 years, according to multiple studies. Not only does their loss harm pollination in agriculture, but it also impacts larger species that prey on them, like migratory birds, bats, and small marsupials.
The study was published in the journal PLOS One.

Not drinking enough water causes greater biological response to stress
People who do not drink enough water have a stronger biological response to stress, according to a study. Researchers found those who habitually drink less release greater levels of the stress hormone cortisol, despite not feeling any thirstier than people who drink more. Keeping a water bottle nearby during stressful periods could be beneficial for long-term health, researchers suggest. The study, led by experts at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), included 16 people who drank under 1.5 litres of water a day, along with 16 people who regularly met daily recommended guidelines for fluid intake. Researchers used the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) guidelines, which recommends men should drink 2.5 litres of water a day while women should drink two litres. In the UK, the Eatwell Guide suggests adults should drink between six and eight cups of fluid a day, which is roughly 1.5 to two litres. However, people may need to drink more when it is hot, if they are very active, if they are recovering from an illness, or if they are pregnant or breastfeeding. Researchers monitored hydration in both groups over seven days using urine and blood samples, after which they were invited into the lab for a stress test. The test involved an impromptu job interview, for which each individual was given 10 minutes to prepare for. After that time, they were invited into another room where a fake camera was set up and asked to do the interview to a panel of three people dressed in white coats. Following the fake interview, individuals were then asked to do a mental arithmetic challenge which involved subtracting numbers as fast as they can. Professor Neil Walsh, of the LJMU School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, described the test as 'really flustering'. He told the PA news agency: 'We know that people who have a low daily fluid intake, who don't meet the recommendations, are likely to be poorly hydrated. 'But what we didn't know was whether, when you then stress those people under controlled conditions, they would have a greater stress hormone response.' Researchers collected saliva samples from the group before and after the stress test to measure cortisol levels. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, is produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress and also plays a role in immune response, metabolism and blood pressure. The team found cortisol levels were higher in those who drank less. Prof Shaw noted that stress responses such as increased heart rate, sweaty hands and dry mouth were similar between the two groups. 'Both groups felt equally anxious and experienced similar increases in heart rate during the stress test,' he said. 'But the people who were poorly hydrated, because they were not drinking enough water each day, had much greater cortisol responses.' The low-fluid intake group did also not report feeling more thirsty than those who drank more, according to Prof Walsh. He added: 'Cortisol is the body's primary stress hormone and exaggerated cortisol reactivity to stress is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and depression. 'If you know you have a looming deadline or a speech to make, keeping a water bottle close could be a good habit with potential benefits for your long-term health.' Prof Walsh said further research is needed to better understand the findings, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, and to see if increasing water intake in those who do not drink enough can reduce responses to daily 'micro stressors' like traffic jams or presentations at work. 'We'd like to think that meeting the water intake guidelines could be one of a number of things you could do to blunt that cortisol response day to day,' he added.

Hazardous discovery prompts closure of seven Aussie beaches and pools: 'Do not touch'
Seven popular beaches and pools have been closed on Australia's east coast after mysterious, grey debris balls were discovered on the sand. Authorities on the northern end of the NSW Central Coast have warned residents not to touch the balls and to stay away until further notice. The balls are grey in colour and range from 1 to 4cm in size, and at this stage, their origin is unknown. However, signage at a local beach pool advises, 'Due to a possible sewage contamination from Sydney, we have been advised to close the baths'. It's not uncommon to find balls of this nature on beaches after heavy rain, like what has been experienced in NSW this week. Similar incidents have been triggered by the release of wastewater into the ocean. Describing the smell of the Sydney balls, he said they were disgusting, and it was no surprise that there was faecal matter mixed in. The balls were solid and hard like plasticine, but also grainy. Study finds link between metabolic syndrome, Parkinson's disease
Folks with metabolic syndrome have up to a 40% higher risk of developing Parkinson's disease, a new study says. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of health problems that include excess belly fat, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar and abnormal cholesterol levels. It's already known to increase people's risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. And now researchers have found an association between metabolic syndrome and Parkinson's, a degenerative nerve disease that primarily affects motor skills, according to findings published Wednesday in the journal Neurology. "Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder among older adults after Alzheimer's disease, and metabolic syndrome affects an estimated 1 in 4 adults and is highly modifiable," researcher Weili Xu, a professor in geriatric epidemiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, said in a news release. "Our findings suggest that metabolic syndrome may be a modifiable risk factor for Parkinson's disease," Xu said. For the study, researchers analyzed data for more than 467,000 participants in the UK Biobank, a large-scale health research project in the United Kingdom. Nearly 2 of 5 people (38%) had metabolic syndrome. Participants were followed for a median of 15 years, during which more than 3,200 developed Parkinson's disease. Median means half were followed longer, half for a shorter time. People with metabolic syndrome were about 40% more likely to develop Parkinson's than those without the syndrome, results show. Researchers also pooled their research with data gathered in eight previous studies, creating a group of nearly 25 million people with more than 98,500 cases of Parkinson's. In that meta-analysis, the team found a 29% increased risk of Parkinson's among people with metabolic syndrome. "We also found a higher risk of Parkinson's disease for people with both metabolic syndrome and a genetic susceptibility for Parkinson's disease," Xu said. "This suggests that maintaining metabolic health may be especially important for people who have genes that increase their risk for Parkinson's disease." Parkinson's occurs when the body's ability to produce the neurochemical dopamine is damaged or destroyed. A lack of dopamine causes the movement problems associated with the disease. Researchers said the health problems associated with metabolic syndrome might impair dopamine production in the body. High blood pressure and high cholesterol also might damage the tiny blood vessels in the brain, contributing to Parkinson's. Researchers noted that their findings could not prove a direct cause-and-effect link between metabolic syndrome and Parkinson's, only an association. "Future studies are needed to see whether working to control metabolic syndrome could help prevent Parkinson's disease," Xu concluded.
