Billy Joel reveals tragic diagnosis as he cancels all tour dates through next year

Yahoo25-05-2025

The Piano Man is taking a break.
Billy Joel, 76, has canceled all tour dates amid a new health diagnosis.
The 'Uptown Girl' singer revealed the shocking news via social media on Friday, saying he has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus.
The disorder happens when cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain, disrupting cognitive functioning.
Joel's condition has become worse due to his recent concert performances, 'leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance,' his lengthy Instagram announcement read.
The doctor has ordered the 'We Didn't Start the Fire' hitmaker to 'refrain from performing during this recovery period' as Joel is undergoing specific physical therapy under his medical team's instructions.
NPH is a rare condition that affects about 0.2% of people between the ages of 70 and 80 and around 6% of those over 80.
When the body can't circulate or reabsorb CSF properly, it accumulates and can cause pressure inside the skull. Permanent damage can happen if CSF keeps accumulating, forcing the brain to compress.
Symptoms are similar to dementia patients and include difficulty walking, cognitive issues like memory difficulties or emotional changes, and urinary incontinence. In some cases, NPH is reversible.
Joel's diagnosis doesn't mean he's out for good, though.
The announcement ended on a positive note, with his team telling fans that Joel is 'thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.'
The five-time Grammy winner also released a statement to his fans.
'I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,' Joel shared.
Those with tickets to any of Joel's canceled shows, which include dates in New York, New Orleans, Toronto, Santa Clara, California, Salt Lake City, Washington, DC, and Liverpool, will get automatically refunded to the original form of payment used to purchase the tickets.
The Post reached out to Joel's rep for additional comment.
The 'New York State of Mind' singer had already postponed several tour dates in March due to a 'medical condition.'
'The current tour will be postponed for four months to allow him to recover from recent surgery and to undergo physical therapy under the supervision of his doctors,' a statement from his team on March 11 read.
At the time, the music man said that 'while I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first.'
He added, 'I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.'
Joel has had a rough year.
In February, the star fell during his concert in Connecticut, and the accident was caught on video by a fan.
Joel appeared to stumble while on the stage before falling backward and landing on his side.
Despite the blunder, he recovered and continued on with the show.
Joel's wife, Alexis Roderick, has also struggled with her health in recent months and spoke out about suffering from endometriosis earlier this month.
The condition, in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causes Roderick chronic pain, which she was forced to deal with while taking care of her and Joel's two young children while Joel was on tour.
The pair, who married in 2015, have two daughters: Della, 9, and Remy, 7.
Roderick opened up to Fox News Digital about how Joel supported her as she struggled to get a diagnosis.
'He's extremely supportive,' she shared. 'So picking up where I leave off and covering my deficits during that time was huge. We're just always researching — he'll email me articles like, 'Did you know that this happens with endometriosis?'
'Never in a million years would I think that he would be sending me that kind of stuff, but when you're watching someone suffer, you pick up. You have to. It's what we do. We're a family.'
Besides Roderick, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has been married to Elizabeth Weber, Katie Lee and Christie Brinkley.
Joel and the supermodel were married from 1985 to 1994, and they have one daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, 39.
Brinkley discusses hot topics of their marriage in her memoir 'Uptown Girl,' including those affair rumors. She also blamed his drinking for the end of their relationship.
Just last year, Joel ended his record-breaking 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden.
He played his last show in July, marking his 150th concert at the legendary venue.

New guidance launched in Ireland to support LGBTQ+ inclusion in mental health services

On June 6, a landmark new guidance was launched in Ireland to support staff working across mental health services in delivering more inclusive and equitable care to LGBTQ+ people. The document follows a review that highlighted how LGBTQ+ people face disproportionate levels of mental distress and unmet needs. Launched this morning at the LGBT Ireland National Conference, the guidance was produced by the Mental Health Commission with the aim of providing accessible guidance to mental health professionals. The document offers 'a deeper understanding' of the unique challenges that LGBTQ+ people face when accessing mental health services in Ireland. The guidance is based on an evidence review which highlighted the disproportionate levels of mental distress and unmet needs members of the LGBTQ+ community face, especially young people and trans individuals. The review found high rates of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and self-injury among LGBTQ+ people. Moreover, it highlighted a prevalence of anxiety, depression and eating disorders among gender and sexual minorities. These findings are supported by other research conducted in Ireland, including Belong To's Being LGBTQI+ in Ireland research and the My LGBTI+ Voice Matters study. These studies have highlighted how LGBTQ+ individuals experience a higher mental health burden in comparison to the general population. Visualizza questo post su Instagram Un post condiviso da Belong To (@belongtoyouthservices) LGBT Ireland welcomed the launch of the document, with CEO Paula Fagan saying it is a 'practical and much-needed' guidance. She added, 'This document is a vital step toward changing that trajectory by equipping staff with the tools and awareness they need to treat LGBTQIA+ service users with dignity, understanding and respect.' Chief Executive of the Mental Health Commission John Farrelly commented, saying: 'Many LGBTQIA+ people face significant mental health challenges that may not always be adequately addressed. 'Our guidance document is a response to that reality,' Farrelly added. 'It recognises that even where staff only have a surface-level understanding of LGBTQIA+ issues, their openness to learn and evolve is key to delivering truly inclusive care. This guidance is a call to action for mental health services to continue to become more responsive, affirming, and equitable.' Minister of State for Mental Health Mary Butler also welcomed the guidance, saying: 'Everyone who uses a mental health service should feel confident that they can access services which are inclusive, compassionate and completely non-judgmental. 'I encourage all those who deliver and work in mental health services to implement the important and practical steps contained in the guidance.' David Shaw and Tarriona ‘Tank' Ball Bring the Heat to New Orleans' Musicians on Musicians Event

Even with Bourbon Street bustling outside, nothing matched the buzzy energy of The Jazz Playhouse at The Royal Sonesta Hotel New Orleans as musicians David Shaw of the Revivalists and Tarriona 'Tank' Ball from Tank and the Bangas sat down with Rolling Stone senior music editor Joseph Hudak for the latest installment of the 'Musicians on Musicians' series in partnership with Sonesta International Hotels. Sitting on stage, closely surrounded by Sonesta Travel Pass guests and a lucky handful of their biggest fans, Shaw and Tank bonded over their unique artistry, friendship, and connections to New Orleans. 'The real focus is how place and location influence your creativity,' said Hudak, referring to the city's culture and how deeply entwined it is with both Shaw and Tank's music. More from Rolling Stone Making Music and Memories in Myrtle Beach How TikTok Is Rewriting the Rules for Emerging Artists How to Buy 'Rolling Stone Presents: Amplified, the Immersive Rock Experience' Tickets Online Shaw described moving from Ohio to New Orleans in 2007 to work for a gas company during the rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. 'I was a construction worker and also making music,' he said. Coming from what he described as 'cowshit and cornstalks,' New Orleans 'felt so different and foreign in such an amazing way…Immediately I could tell the city had a special feeling to it.' Still, he is careful to pay homage to the local musicians whose hard work and legacy have carved out the Crescent City as a premiere destination for great live music: 'Not being from here, it's really about respect and respecting the lineage.' As a spoken-word artist, Tank—who won her first Grammy in 2025 for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album with Tank and the Bangas' The Heart, The Mind, The Soul— got her start at local open mics. 'What made my open mic night really special is it was a poetry open mic and so I always felt so comfortable to be myself because the poets were so encouraging,' she recalled. It was this support and community that provided her with the space to create her signature combination of R&B and poetry. 'New Orleans is about authenticity,' Shaw added. 'Just be you and the wind will carry you.' Both artists have been fans of each other for a long time and recently played together at this year's Jazz and Heritage Festival. 'I love a good live show and I love a good live singer,' Tank gushed to Shaw. 'You're like a rock star to me!' Mentioning her influences (which range from poets Maya Angelou and Nicky to musicians like Queen and Tina Turner), she was also quick to add, 'The Revivalists are dope, too.' Asked what people get wrong about New Orleans music, Tank and Shaw encouraged visitors and locals alike to explore the city's culture beyond the big events like Mardi Gras. 'There's an underbelly of a different type of artistry that locals make come alive,' explained Tank. 'People in New Orleans entertain every day and half the time the music is free…They pour their life into it because it is a part of us.' Following the conversation, guests refreshed their cocktails, which included spicy palomas and local rye-based favorite the Vieux Carré, snacked on beignets, then settled in for intimate sets by both artists. Shaw, playing the acoustic guitar, kicked things off with 'Come Back Home' off his solo album Take a Look Inside. He then introduced a new song 'Lost and Found,' saying, 'It's probably my favorite song I've written in awhile…I'm a pretty shy guy, but—dammit—I'm proud of this one!' After more songs and stories, he reluctantly finished with 'When You Love Somebody,' telling the audience, 'Someone's gonna have to cut me off because I'm having too much fun.' Next, Tank took the stage with the Bangas, first playing the contagiously joyful 'Spaceships' from 2019's Green Balloon. The band's energy never flagged as they moved onto songs including 'Boxes and Squares' and a cover of fellow New Orleanian Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World,' with a special spoken word addition by Tank. Calling to the happy audience, she sang, 'If you love New Orleans, say it's a wonderful world!' As the Sonesta International Hotels hosted 'Musicians on Musicians' events continue, Sonesta Travel Pass members will have the opportunity to attend and cheer on celebrated artists in multiple cities throughout this year. Justin & Hailey Bieber's Prenup Details Finally Revealed Amid Reports He Could Get Half of Her Billion-Dollar Fortune

The speculation over Hailey and Justin Bieber's marriage has reached a fever pitch in the last few months. From reports about Justin's declining health, to his alleged money issues, to fans speculating he doesn't treat his wife right, without forgetting Kendall and Kylie Jenner reportedly trying to stage an intervention to save the marriage, there has been a lot of news. But throughout it all, the two have remained steady, or at least that's what they want us to believe. Now, however, it seems like remaining together would actually be the best for Hailey Bieber, financially speaking. The model-turned-entrepreneur did, after all, sell her beauty brand, Rhode, to e.l.f in a billion-dollar deal. And multiple sources told Page Six that the two never signed a prenup, so if they were ever to split, Justin could be entitled to half of her earnings. More from StyleCaster Justin Bieber Just Shared a Cryptic Post About 'Loyalty' After Rumors He & 'Not Happy' Hailey Are 'Getting Divorced' Hailey Bieber's Net Worth Revealed Amid Reports 'Broke' Justin Is Close to 'Financial Collapse' Related: Who did Justin Bieber date before Hailey Bieber? 'It's highly unusual for people of their stature to not have an agreement that governs their assets,' a top Hollywood divorce lawyer told Page Six. 'But sometimes people don't want to do it.' Moreover, the lawyer explained, 'Because they live in California, the state would have jurisdiction, and the law states that anything created during marriage is community property. If there is no prenup [or] postnuptial … agreement, this sounds like community property to me.' Of course, Bieber won't actually be taking home a billion dollars herself, as the deal is more complicated than that, but she's still getting a big payout. This is apparently not that strange, as some reports indicate she has become the breadwinner of the family late. Justin Bieber has not released a new album since 2021, but The Hollywood Reporter recently reported he is 'very close' to finishing a new project. Ironically, Bieber's entire catalogue, which he sold in 2023, would not be communal property, as Bieber's catalogue originated before their marriage. The singer has reportedly been having some money problems since he cancelled what was left of his 'Justice' tour in late 2022 after a diagnosis of Type 2 Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a facial paralysis disease. He reportedly lost out on an estimated $90 million in income by doing so. Rumors about the state of the couple's marriage resurfaced once again after Justin Bieber posted a questionable caption when it was announced Hailey would be on the June cover of Vogue. 'Yo this reminds me when Hailey and I got into a huge fight,' he explained on his Instagram. 'I told hails that she would never be on the cover of vogue. Yikes I know, so mean,' he said, adding an apology at the end that almost didn't feel like one, 'So baby u already know but forgive me for saying u wouldn't get a vogue cover cuz clearly i was sadly mistaken.' Afterwards, he replaced the caption with a series of emojis, '🤷🫵🏻🫶🏼🥹.' Hailey, however, responded to the rumors by telling Vogue: 'You would think after having a child, people would maybe move on, chill out a little bit, but no. So I guess these bitches are going to be mad.' So it looks like there's no trouble in paradise, and financially, that's probably a good thing.
